I have the Hallmark Lionel ornaments of the original releases of these two locomotives. The tops of both smokestacks are identical to these. I have studied all of these ornaments against photos of the actual Lionel pieces, and have found them to be remarkable in how faithfully they match the pieces they are modeled after.

For the whistle Lionel should’ve used the seria No. 3 whistle.

To adjust the sound, press down on the bell and whistle buttons at the same time. Wait for the red LED to flash. While still holding down the buttons, turn the wheel to the right. The sound will increase. Set it to where you want it to remain. Now... comes the tricky part. Take your fingers off the buttons, but turn the wheel down to neutral. Too slow and the trains will speed off. But your sound should be set at a level where you can hear it comfortably. Frankly, I wish Lionel would update their 4-4-0s. Get rid of the molded wheels and make ones with real spokes. Get rid of that blasted "bay window" in the front of the cab. And if possible, do something about the large overhang in the back. ;)

That did not work. Plus you can adjust the sound levels in Lionchief app and don't have to do that button process on the remote. The sounds are just lower volume at their maximum setting on the 119.

Is the smoke and sound issue caused by the software programming?

Lionel is currently investigating what the cause of these issues is. Looks like the smoke unit is on, because it is pulling amps when turned on, so best guess is the factory forget the smoke unit batting inside, but we will see. Sound is probably just the sound set was recorded too low. Stay tuned.

A pricey set, this one. I've been after a 4-4-0 for a while, but I opted for a gently-used Lone Ranger version instead, basically the same thing minus the Lionchief. As for the scale brass hybrid 4-4-0's that are coming out, good gracious are they expensive!

They should make a newer version of this set that uses the tooling from the brass hybrid models while being priced the same as these...

I doubt they would do that as the hybrids are true scale and much smaller with massive details applied (extremely delicate). Although they could make a better tooling for these lower cost sets. These are very toy like unlike MTH's 4-4-0's.

Hi Sean, isn't the "stop sound" the replication of driving the spike into the rail? You said bell sound, but I think it is supposed to be the spike.

Yes the 119 was the Union Pacific and that company built the railroad coming from the East to West.

$500, last time I checked. A bit steep considering it's basically the same 4-4-0 Lionel has made for years now.
