🔥LIPO BATTERY CHARGING & STORAGE🔥 BAT-SAFE WITH EXHAUST

This is how I charge and store my lipo batteries. I Use the BAT-SAFE containers and added an exhaust system to remove any smoke in case of a fire. The exhaust fan activates from a smoke alarm or switch. I definitely feel good about charging in the house now. When I saw what a Lipo Fire can do first hand it scared me. Thats a nice set up. I worry about the possibility of killing some one. You dont think about it, but it could happen. the house down the street caught fire 6 months ago because of a drone battery fire, and it killed the dog that was trapped in the house. You never know worst case. Supper Nice

Very, very nice job. Exactly what I want to do. I never thought much about lipo fires because I always make sure I my amperage and voltage is correct. Then 2 weeks ago one of my two- year-old Turnigy 2200 3-cell lipos popped and started burning during rechargeing. Fortunately, I recharge lipos right next to my desk in my home-office, so I am always present when charging. Also fortunately, the fire went out a soon as I turned off the power to the charger. I then grabbed the battery and ran for the door to toss it outside. This was a very rude awakening. I realized I needed to check my batteries for weak cells before each recharge and get some safe charging boxes. I spent a couple afternoons and evenings watching lipo bag and lipo box tests on you-tube. I think lipo bags should be outlawed. The Bat-Safe boxes seem to be the cleanest, most viable solution. Yes, your set-up, including the smoke triggered exhaust fan is the ticket. I think it is he only way to go. Thanks for sharing.

Wow very nice setup, nice touch with the automatic fan. I am paranoid about these batteries sending my house up in flames, I just ordered two of these bat safe boxes for some peace of mind. $140 for two of the medium sized boxes is the cheapest insurance policy I can possibly imagine! totally worth it for charging indoors.

Very good setup. You earned my sub and like, just because you use Bat-Safes. I use them for several years, same concernes as you. A lot of people do not think a couple of steps further. The flames are one thing, that is why people get amo boxes. But they forget about the smoke that not only can also kill you, but also damage your house. Another thing people do not think about is there insurance. At least with a Bat-Safe you can show you did the best you could. Love that you took it even a step further with the exhaust fan. 👊👍

I’m gonna look for some part numbers for you. It’s been awhile. I made the hood and all the duct. That’s what I do for a living. You could buy round pipe at Home Depot or menards. The fan is an in-line 8” exhaust fan around 800 cfm. You’ll need a backdraft damper, and insulation if you live in cold environment. You’ll. Need a wall grill for the outside of your house. The smoke alarm is made by gentek 8000 series. It needs to have a built in relay. The smoke detector itself cannot power the fan. When the alarm goes off it sends power to a contact and that powers the fan. I put a switch on it to bypass alarm and contact if I wanted to turn on. I’m not sure how electrically savvy you are. You also need a contact. I can’t seem to find the exact fan I bought on amazon. I looked up my past order on amazon. It says it not available. The brand of the fan is Vivosun, the one I have they don’t have anymore. You can get a different fan just make sure it will fit where you want to put it and you have a way of exhausting it outside. Paul 815 no need to look for the part numbers. I found a harbor freight 8” fan that should do the trick. I’m gonna wire it up to a smoke with a relay so it controls the fan like u did. Love the idea. Can’t wait to finish my setup. Thanks again for sharing the video

I just found one possible weakness. The shelf. I know this shelf i also have it in my garage. Some important parts for stability are made of plastic. If they get hot and plastic become soft it is possible the shelf will collape, the BAT-SAFE boxes fall on the ground and probably would open, and the burning bats will fall out of the box and probably cause the fire to spread. But presumably the heat is so low and the boxes so tight that there is no danger of the plastic becoming soft... But it could still be the case I'm not 100% sure, so maybe it is a weakness after all...

They started a fire to test, and it didn’t ignite either one. The box is insulated. Not saying something crazy couldn’t happen. But I feel good about my setup. ✌🏼

@@Paul-815 the boxes have metaluc contact with the shelf. They can transfer heat to the shelf. Paper begins to burn at 180° - 360° C and in the scenario you descripe the paper was cooled by ambient air. But plastic can get soft at 80 - 150° C. Probably the shelf is a good cooler ( like a cpu cooler ) but i'm not 100% the shelf will keep under 80°C if one of the boxes will get very hot... I still believe there is a risk with this design... You can still improve it just by finding a shelf that is 100% of metal...

People can say what they want- but when I finally make the move to lipos- I'm getting either these or dropping the cash on one of those commercial grade Zarges boxes and I'm STILL storing and charting them outside in a shed or separate area. I will never have these in my house w/ my kids- I don't care about any of that "They're safe if you care for them properly blah blah" shit. I've heard too many stories where that wasn't the case, and even if it was- it only takes one mistake, nobody's perfect. It's not worth getting to play with RC cars lol

Would it be possible to use a fire place to charge Lipo batteries ? fire place has glass doors. Have to put your charger in there also, Iam talking about Traxxas batteries. I use ammo boxes with fire proof covers on the batteries.

i have batt safe but I always dislike chargin with it closed. I cant decide if its better to be close and watch while they charge with the case open of just close it. I feel like its better to charge with it open, then disconnect and and close if a battery begins to puff or you get a sweat lithium smell.

First, thanks for watching. The fires I spoke of started while charging. I only physically talked to the one person and I don’t think they were sitting by and watching the batteries charge. Either way, when they go up it happens fast. I’ve done a lot of research and it seems most fires happen while charging. Second from a crash or over discharging. I’ve never heard of one spontaneously going up. But you never know. I store mine in them and charge in them. It makes me feel better. I don’t mess around with puffy batteries either. There are lots of precautions that can be taken. I hope this helps

I have over 300 lipos in my basement Paul. My only question is when they are in that, how can you see if they are puffing to explode? When i charge I watch them. Do you think they are worth it? 🤔

I think they are worth every penny. That’s just me. I needed that piece of mind. With my setup I don’t have to watch. If they go they go. But I don’t mess around with batteries that are damaged or puffy. If they are damaged i discharge and throw away. I’ve seen first hand what a lipo can do to a building. Hope that helps.

MCMXI thank you. It’s not a standard smoke alarm, it has a built in relay. I also have a contact that powers the fan. So when the alarm triggers, the relay pulls in the contact and that powers the fan. Hope that helps.

They can be safe. If you like rc they are the best by far. You just need to be cautious. I’m probably way over cautious. If you damage a battery don’t use it get rid of it. Store and charge in bat safe is a good idea. They don’t t just spontaneously go up. Its when you charge, discharge or crash. They are fun

@@magnusjohansson295 I have no scientific evidence to say for sure. But every fire I have ever heard of came from crash or charging. Remember to always charge lipos to storage mode when not using. I store my lipos in batsafe just in case. I also use when traveling.
