why did he let the ether run down the funnel? shouldnt the ether-h20 mixed solved extracted out first in a clean flask, and the ether portion poured out of the funnel (where the cork is) so that the two dont get contaminated?

@thrasha666 You usually discard the aqueous layer. So let a bit of orgo layer into the separated aqueous layer then toss that, What you have left is your separated orgo layer. Dry and purify further as needed.

Solvent gets evaporate anyway. And if one wants to get puriety in the upper layer more washings will be performed. EEw my keyboard sucks keeping doing a screen scroll while typing.

Ive heard and seen that same thing but I'm pretty sure the drying agent he adds to it will get rid of the H2O in the organic liquid. I'm not an expert but ive don't a couple of labs like this one this semester...

After you've completely removed the organic layer (in this case the top layer), you should rinse with ether to further remove your product thats stuck on the walls of the sep funnel (he didn't show that in the vid). Then you can simply rinse the sep funnel with soap and water, followed by acetone. Soap/water will remove polar impurities and the acetone will remove any remaining nonpolar(organic) impurities.
