Fast Floating 4 Patch Quilt using 5" Charm Squares

A 4 Patch Quilt is one of the staples of quilts. There are simple 4 patches, Disappearing 4 Patch Quilts and 4 patch quilts made with strips. I am going to share a floating 4 patch quilt where the 4 patches seemingly float like the Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora (an Avatar reference). This is one of the quilts I reference in my 5 tips for faster quilts video - a simple 4 patch block with 2 more strips added to give the illusion in your quilt that the 4 patch blocks are floating.
This quilt can be made using 5" charm squares and 2 1/2" strips or a combination of pre cuts and yardage you cut yourself. No rules - just fun! This quilt pattern is perfect for any occasion. So break out that rotary cutter and let's get to quilting.

April I have the same desk set up that you have. Mine is in teak and I love it!! I have the kangroo and your chair matches mine to a "T"! That proves that like minds think alike and it means that you and I have GREAT taste!! And yes, I would have picked the yellow also, oh excuse me "lello"! I will be making this quilt and I may use it with a panel that has small squares - or 9:1/2 " so that it will all fit together. You are one smark cookie. Eith of the wood prints will provide a frame effect for your top. Grey would be more subtle. Brown would be stronger. I would choose the grey but that's because i prefer subtle. Any of your color choices would work. So sweet lady. Please yourself.

Love the changes you’ve made in the room. I have only pieced 3 quilt tops so you can see that I’m a newbie. I love the way you sewed the blocks together but you lost me with the yellow fabric. How did you decide where to put the yellow fabric?

Welcome to quilting. The yellow fabric only went on 2 sides of each block. It didn’t matter which 2 sides. So then when you arranged the blocks it didn’t look like there was a consistent pattern. And I also bordered the entire quilt with the yellow to give it a more cohesive look. As you become more experienced it will make more sense. Just keep on Asking questions. 😀. And keep making quilts. Experience is the best teacher. April

When you buy yardage for your stash. How much do you buy? Is 4 yards of each piece good or do you do a lesser amount?

Hi. When I buy yardage for my stash I buy based on how much I like the fabric. If I love it - I buy 2 yards; otherwise, I buy 1 yard. If it is on sale and I think it would make a good backing I buy 4 yards. I try to only to get fabric I love. If I just buy because it is on sale I might not want to use it later. 😀 April

Your quilt top is cute. I love your little dog and cat. My sewing room is a big mess right now; Because, the hot water tank broke. Everything in the master closet had to be moved out to get in the little closet (where the tank was located). The cutting table (and everything under it) had to be moved out of the sewing room (which was the master bedroom). The spare bedroom is piled up with the items from the master closet. My office is piled up with items from the sewing room. The cutting table was taken down and put in the living room. You could say that my house is a mess right now. There is a small leak on the hot water pipe (which means that the plumber will have to come back, the new hot water tank will have to be drained, and the repair made). However, this Thanksgiving I was very thankful that there was running water in the house again. Why do these things happen near (or on) a holiday?

It is Murphy's Law - it happens when it is the most inconvenient. However, this is your chance to go everything as you put it back and maybe gift things you don't use or want. :-).
