"While many people do not associate heavy metal with the future of aerodynamics, it turns out that French heavy metal band Gojira were onto something in their song 'Flying Whales.' Humpback whales have bumps on the leading edge of their tails, which affects its aerodynamics." The start of my introduction for my Experimental Aerodynamics project.

4:56 - 5:37 I lose it everytime when that section kicks in. I couldn't care less about elitists say but that section IMO is heavier and pulverizing than most slam metal songs I've listened to date. My face gets involuntarily scrunched up everytime I listen to these riffs. This is coming from someone who's an ardent fan of extreme metal - brutal death and black metal in particular. Gojira just nailed it, that's all I can say.

@@wastingtime2380 I think it could be. I mean the first riff around 2:25. It hits so heavy because it has got so little spaces between notes, and except that never gives a resting chance to your ears. And it's coming after 2 minutes of calmness. Bass and guitar plays the same thing too. They are just on different octaves. So...it's just majestic. That's the riff that made Gojira famous. Maybe not Top 10, but it deserves Top 100 at least, definitely.

@@wastingtime2380 It's not a SUPER creative riff, but after that calmer intro (which let's be honest, could have gone on for 10 minutes and we'd still be happy with it), the drop into that main riff has such an impact that many can't compare to.

I have always felt like this song has one of the most effective, and hardest hitting breakdowns ever written. It's not the most impressive, nor the most technical. It's relatively simple and straight forward, but it serves the purpose of a huge release after a long buildup better than any breakdown I've heard since. You can say what you will about breakdowns but when it's used right and hits hard, it's an incredibly cathartic feeling. This one hits like a fucking nuclear detonation.

Fucking awesome. Gojira is the only current-day metal band I really listen to, they caught my attention but probably a lot later than everyone else. I'm sure there's other great stuff out but they appeal a lot to my late 90s/early 00s tastes... this almost sounds like a heavier deftones.
