Some of us have listened to Arch Enemy before. Both Alissa (the current singer) and before her Angela Gossow use(d) harsh vocals. I got my little surprise in 2002, when AE released the "Wages Of Sin" album, the first with Angela aboard.

The Pisces sign is two fishes swimming in a circle and symbolizes duality. Think of the Chinese yin and yang symbol. She's not singing about pathology or mental illness, but rather both sides of Pisces' deep emotional nature manifesting both as positive sensitivity and dark depression and self destruction. As a Pisces myself (Tatiana is one as well), I can attest that our desire for intimacy often makes us vulnerable to abuse and being taken advantaged of by others.

@Marcin Stępnicki first off I want distinguish between being right for the wrong reason and being wrong for the right reasons isn't really meant to be negative but that clarification is needed or something similar, so thanks for asking nicely. Nirvana "heart shaped box" begins with "she eyes me like a Pisces". What does this mean? Quite honestly I have no clue as you can ask anyone who believes in astrological symbols and each and everyone will give a different answer. Though some will come close to each other it is all vaguery. The problem I have is believing that astrology predicts not only how you will act, BUT, that one type of person has the only/best insight into the emotional space being explored here. This is mostly what I was objecting to above. Part of this is coming from the shift in narrative that occurs in the song. The first two verses are very much personal with the use of "I" The third is about another. "His" The end is about everyone (? Presumably, or at least an amalgamation) - all the Pisces are swimming up the river.. and there is a sense of a mass slaughter house. The end of the "I" story is the second verse talking about the hooks and nets but she is "skiddish" and not taking the bait. But others are. It's a warning with the consequences then spelled out. The symbolism in the yin and yang... Which I think is older than the Pisces symbology but I honestly could be wrong there... The symbolism and ideas still are correct. The way to look at this from my perspective is to take your own path, not get caught up (look at the myth of sysiphis) in the emotional, AND to be a unified whole. The yin and yang is one continuous cycle and circle "you can't tell where one ends and the other begins" This is completeness. Not being this way leads to the end of the song. Want more?

song has nothing to do with astrology at all per Tatiana herself and this song was about something very deeply personal that she was dealing with and her and her guitarist are the only two that know what it's true meaning is. This is per her in an interview because of so many people making statements like you just did and reading their own beliefs into it. But everyone can read what they wish into it as it strikes each and every person differently. But again it has nothing to do with Astrology per her. shrugs.. is still a very beautiful and haunting song.

For me. Many metal bands, songs and lyrics deal with difficult and often dark topics with sophistication and empathy, something which is missed by many. The aggression and power of the music also serve as a safe outlet for the anger and frustration that the music content also invokes. This often helps me (and I hope others) to reflect, relate and manage these emotions and social issues in our own minds. Finally, the metal community is generally tolerant, accepting and frequently thoughtful. Love it all.

Truth... Metal does not stray away from the hard topics or the difficult topics..Old school Metal head here and I can say honestly ... I am here only because Metal made me think and saved me from myself and my self destructive attitude and extreme anger when i was a very young man. it helped me work through a very very hard and dark time for me. sometimes there is no one to turn too but music is always a friend with no judgement and the metal community relates to those people hurting and in those dark places..when have you ever seen anyone raise up a kid that is wheelchair bound up above everyone's head and help them crowd surf.. no one but metal heads...when have you seen people with disabilities being welcomed into a pit and treated as they wish to be... normally as they should be...but yet also watched over so they can bash away and not get hurt also... that's metal heads... my grandkids are different levels of metal and genres of metal.. the youngest is a girl of 7 and she loves amon amarth and some other bands that are heavier.. the grandson is 10 and loves more the Korn and even metal core i think it is called has that dubstep stuff in it.. so be well and keep on rockin' ... Metal for life !! \m/

The unusual time signatures of their music puts Jinjer solidly into the "progressive metal" subgenre. I think Tatiana will be the first to admit that Gwen Stefani is one of her idols, so that may be why her singing style sounds so familiar. I recommend "Home Back" and that you look at the band's history, the motivation of the song and read the lyrics before listening. The band members had to leave their homes and move to Kiev when Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014. The song is sadly still relevant today with Russia's latest invasion. I agree that the lyrics are hard to understand when using the growl/scream technique which is why I recommend reading the lyrics first, but the emotions evoked by the technique and the visuals of the video make this a must-visit video for a reaction. They do sell shirts on their website to raise money for Ukrainian relief. Those are also worth checking out - cool shirts, great band, important fundraiser.
@mcflyjp

The "unusual time signatures" is only unusual to the genre, which I guess is why you said they get put into a subgenre. Check out RX Bandits, they are prog rock/ska and they go through like 3 or 4 different time signatures every song. Also their bridges are always ridiculous

another example of the sacrifice in the Pisces archetype, would catch a hook (death) to see the sun. It's all Pisces stuff. All of it. They get feisty too and wave their tail. Tati is like everybody, a collection of planets in different signs, I'm sure she is Aries and Cancer too and Scorpio to make that sound from Hades.

I turned to metal as a kid because my life was full of pain and drama i was surrounded by hooks and nets too, as the people in my family who wanted to set me up or entrap me into the bad things they where doing but i was skittish and avoided it all and to this day thankful i made the right choices in life and created my own peaceful life away from drama and violence. Metal is the reality we pretend doesn't exist but life is full of anger, pain, drama and to many of us is/was an escape but now we just enjoy the talented performers and the stories they tell. It's not the same old same old like mainstream.

Tatiana has great use of her false vocal cords to perform the growl. Her switching between her normal voice and the growl is seamless and helps her convey strong emotional content. She plants herself well and you can see that she is not straining her voice to accomplish the distortion effect. Great vocalist and a really good band. Listen again to Pisces a couple of times and it might just grow on you.

I truly loved this reaction. As a person of faith that actually loves heavy heavy music I find that your analysis to be refreshing. As a guitarist and musician I learned to appreciate Jinjer not only for Tatiana’s Voice but for the time changes and rhythms that create tension in their music. You will love Jinjer once you understand what they are doing. If you want to truly go hard-core with something even heavier than Jinjer I would recommend Lorna Shore to the hellfire. You have a new follower becuse your reaction to the video was only half the entire run time. I love the breakdown of the lyrics and a great take on the psychology behind them. In Astrology, Pisces is represented by two fish pointing in opposite directions. This duality a pull towords both life and death. It is like the Quote from Sitting Bull: “Inside of me there are two dogs. One is mean and evil and the other is good and they fight each other all the time. Yes, Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting started in 2014. Russian is their native language. Nice lyric analysis, you pretty much got it. Tatiana is mostly self taught, and yes, that is all the same person. lol The harsh vocals are using the false vocal folds, not the vocals chords. As you see, she can easily switch back and forth between the harsh and clean. She doesn't really do anything to take care of her voice either, she even smokes. Tati is a Pisces. Glad you mentioned the drummer, Vlad. This live session was done to showcase him, he had recently joined the band. He ,Roman(guitar), and Eugene(bass) are all awesome musicians. The guys were allowed to leave Kiev a few months ago ,and they are back on tour. Yes, they are classified metalcore, but they will use other genres, including jazz and reggae , often within the same song. She can do it live as well. Perennial (live at Wacken 2019) is a good example. If you want to try more: Teacher Teacher, Judgement(and Punishment) vocal one take, Home Back, Vortex, I Speak Astronomy.

Great reaction and analysis. Jinjer are discribed as Prog (Progressive) Metal, they are; Tatiana on vocals, Roman is on guitar, Eugene is the bassist, Vlad is the drummer. The band are all really skilled and talented. As you know the song is about the duality of the Zodiac sign of Pisces, Tatiana and Eugene are the both Pisces, Tatiana is the lyricist of the band's songs. Please check out other songs by them; 'Perennial' live at Wacken open air festival from 2019, 'Teacher Teacher' the official music video, 'Judgement (and Punishment)' Tatiana's one-take vocal performance, 'Home Back' the official music video, 'Vortex' the official music video, 'On The Top' and 'Pit of Consciousness' both live in Kiev, there are many more great tracks but these are good ones to start with. The term of the vocal technique used in this is 'Growling' but Tatiana is able to 'Scream' as well, she can use all the different types of harsh vocals. I'm really impressed with your reaction having seen many on KZbin of Jinjer songs so, I've subscribed.

🔥Welcome to Jinjer, Rosalie! I just found your channel, great reaction, I love that you explored the lyrics and your thoughts about metal music, subbed! Thank you for bringing the fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! I love their energy, how tight they are, how down to earth they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and beautiful growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics! The first time I heard Pisces in 2019, I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band (Pisces has been my wakeup alarm for a couple years and I still love it more every time I hear it). TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂 Sorry for the very long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs! My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and "that was more unexpected than my first child" 🤣 I love the story of Tatiana getting interested in learning to growl. In her own words, "I was inspired by Otep (Shamaya). When I was 15, my friend showed me a record of House of Secrets. I was like, ‘That dude - his voice is so powerful'. And he said, ‘Oh come on Tatiana, that’s actually a woman!’ I was like, ‘What?’ She blew my mind. That was the time, the moment when I realized I wanted to shock people just like her. I just had the feeling or the intuition, like an extra sense that this is what I’m made to do.” Three of the four current members had essentially no professional musical training when they joined Jinjer, the exception is Vlad the drummer who studied classical piano. They've been a tour heavy band, on the road almost nonstop from 2013 to 2020 and still touring again now since the covid shutdowns, hard work that has made them fantastic live and they make it look effortless. For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit for her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the newest album Wallflowers, videos are out for Vortex, Mediator, Wallflower, Disclosure!, and Call Me A Symbol. Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds a lot of riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine in 2009 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016 after the third drummer got partially paralyzed from a tragic spine injury and the fourth drummer couldn't keep up with Jinjer's touring schedule) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they've considered their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members and you can see former Jinjer guitarist (and one of the founders of Jinjer) turned actor, Dmitry Oksen, on guitar in older Jinjer videos, and acting as an interrogator in one of their newer videos, Disclosure! One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines her beautiful growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander, Dip A Sail and Bad Water. Other favorites of mine are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that might do well together in one reaction). I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official), Judgement & Punishment (official and/or Tatiana's one take performance, again both must-see), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, a third where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video). Note that because Jinjer has so many great official videos and so many astounding live performance videos, no Jinjer fan will ever mind if you react to a second video for a Jinjer song you've already heard, so whichever songs you choose, whatever pace you like: hope you'll keep trying more Jinjer and enjoy! ❤🖤🤘

I absolutely have been captivated by Tatianas voice. I love all genres of music. The technicality of her vocal prowess is beyond impressive to me. I think she is the queen of false-fold screaming. Going from clean melodic vocals into her effortless, no-strain vocal scream. She is SO skilled with her breathe control and phrasing. The entire band is amazing. You can hear multiple influences with the drums, guitar and bass......they are SO talented Anyway, I also love the lyrics.... they are wonderful and so appropriate to this track. I can't say enough good things....Glad you are experiencing this Rosalie. ♥️

Jinjer is so much more than just Tatiana´s unarguably awesome voice skill... She is also a GREAT poet/songwriter and Vlad, Roman and Eugene are ALL EXTREMELY talented musicians as well. Plus, they are REALLY cool and humble human beings, surrounded by an also amazing crew. They are directly and undirectly helping a lot of the Ukrainian people affected by this fuckin war and that is suffering hardly for a long time... MUCH RESPECT TO ALL OF THEM!!! JNJR FOR LIFE!!!

Hey Rosalie, watching first time reactions to Jinjer never gets old! 😆 I’ve been a musician since I was a kid and I’ve listened to a variety of music and played in multiple bands of various genres, but I was never into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of last year…now I’m obsessed! I instantly loved them due to their fantastic songwriting, musicianship and production and the incredible vocals of Tatiana, with her ability to transition back and forth instantly from beautiful clean vocals to some of the best harsh vocals I’ve heard, female or male. I would highly recommend watching the official video for their song Wallflower (which has a really cool groove, nice lyrics about Tatiana being an introvert and an awesome video), the “live from Wacken” video for the song Perennial and the “live one take vocal performance” video for Judgement and Punishment (Also, Homeback is a powerful song about the chronic fighting in their homeland in Eastern Ukraine, but the music is a little “heavier”). BTW, I love your reaction!

I think the hook represents things we all hope for in life, feeling it will lead to our "sunbeam", maybe in her case its being a star, not fully realizing the negative side of our wish until we achieve our dream. Emeralds ripped away is the innocence being stripped from the naive view of her dream. Drowning in the liquid gold is the joy and satisfaction of the beginnings of success. I believe the song is basically be careful what you wish for from the view of an emotionally sensitive soul.

I have been listening to Jinjer for about 5 years now. Jinjer brakes the mold when it comes to metal. I think one of their main foundations for alot of their song would be light Jazz to which they create metal Jazz. But what I like best is that their songs can be so different and progressive that you never know what to expect.

What makes the drummer so insanely good is his use of ghost notes. It's exquisite. And FYI, there is a shit load of bands that have female growlers and girls in metal are getting more and more prominent. Absolutely amazing. I think one of the first bands that gained some notoriety using a female growling vocalist, that actually replaced a male growling former vocalist, is the Swedish band Arch Enemy. They employed a German singer Angela Gossow who came on board in 2001 on the Wages of Sin album. I remember from the time that this turned the metal world quite upside down - but it was really before youtube, so there weren't any reaction videos back then. :)

We've all been waiting for this :) ... Jijner are a group of insanely good musical technicians; their application of musical theory is well beyond the ordinary, and their playing.... Tatiana is a reggae singer with an expanded repertiore... afaik, she prefers singing reggae, but she taught herself to scream when she joined the group. Apparently she was worried her screams might sound "girly', so she worked on them until they didn't... I think she is a mezzo towards the lower end, by nature; and she has a delightful set of overtones. She sings with very relaxed vocal tract, in general. For more awesome switches, "Teacher, Teacher" is good, and "Perennial" live at Wacken is a go-to. Really enjoying your channel!

Inasmuch music is about contrasts, harsh, distorted vocals offer metal artists a whole extra constrasting palette of sounds to express themselves, ending up with means to explore the full range of human experience - pain and pleasure, angels and demons, inner or in the outside world, as I think you can see with Pisces. At the same time, metal is not all dark, doom-and-gloom, it also comes in powerfully uplifting and inspiring varieties. As an example, I'd offer Devin Townsend, one of the all-time great all-around rock/metal vocalists, who spent his entire career in that exploration, occasionally reaching the (metal) gospel levels of uplift. If that sounds interesting, may I suggest you check out Higher which showcases all of those things, especially the grand live performance in Plovdiv, backed by a full live orchestra and a choir.

Nice reaction! Just subbed to follow your journey into more metal music 🤘😉. I think you were very close with your analysis of the lyrics, I would just like to add a few things. Yes, the symbol of Pisces is a fish, but it's actually a pair of fish. It implies duality. Similar to the Ying-yang.

Good analysis. It's about aspects of Tatiana's journey and mental health struggles through the lens of her Pisces astrology sign and the duality it represents. For a deep dive on the topic of her mental health and chronic depression, she did a text interview with Psychology Today that is available online, and the song Pit Of Consciousness echoes those themes, though it was based on a poem from when she was a teenager and fortunately it seems that stuff has mellowed out a bit since then. I take "scale armor blaze" as being about the hard exterior she shows the world, and possibly especially her brilliantly mesmerizing onstage persona. I've been lucky enough to see them perform twice. The technique sounds so unnatural because it is a different part of the vocal anatomy from what we are used to hearing, the vestibular folds instead of the vocal folds. For more background on growls, I'd suggest either watching a couple of reactions by The Fairy Voice Mother, the first being to Pisces where she explains the technique in detail, and the other being Electric Callboy's Hypa Hypa where she gives a friend a quick tutorial on the technique, and/or the video by The Charismatic Voice putting an endoscope in the throat of Will Ramos of Lorna Shore. I'd add that growls reflect the singer's personality very strongly, and Tatiana has a pronounced tomboy side that comes out very powerfully in her growls. These aren't her lowest growls btw. :D One of their most intense songs is Home Back, about their hometown being caught up in the 2014 war that set the stage for the present invasion. It speaks powerfully for the millions of ordinary people caught in the middle of every war around the world, not just theirs. It'a also a good video for understanding how effective growls can be artistically. I'd love to see her cover Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain" growling the chorus, just saying. A few videos that are a bit easier to stomach than Home Back are Perennial live at Wacken (the OMV is awesome too, and some have done double features), Judgement & Punishment one take, Teacher Teacher official, and I Speak Astronomy official. Since you'll have a hard time understanding the growling sections, maybe do the lyrics part first and then react to the video? Anyway, subbed. Cheers!

That was fun to watch! 😀 Do you know that Floor Jansen can also growl? It is rarely used in Nightwish but she does it in her former band Revamp. Disdain live at Graspop is a good example. As you do not like screaming that much, you could also check out "Face your Demons live" that Floor did on her Solo concert in Amsterdam.

This Song was recorded live. Tatiana's astrological sign is Pisces and the song was based on the Duality of the Sign. The armored scales is Fish Scales. And the last verse your correct on is fishing and fish mongering (emeralds has to do with scales as well) Hiya from Southern Ontario Canada Stay well!!

I have been a metal head for about 40 years, just celebrated my 48th birthday last week with two shows from the Vikings and Lionhearts tour in Budapest, Hungary (on my actual birthday), and Stuttgart, Germany four days later. I really can appreciate how you are not a fan of metal, but still are open to listen to it and give your honest reaction. I used to not like the screaming/growling, until the late 90s/early 00s, which is when I started to be open for some different styles and also started to pay more attention to what songs were really about. While even after 40 years, I still find it difficult when I don't know the background of the song, to like it if I can't understand the lyrics, I know that in metal there is generally a reason to be angry and that's expressed in the music, and once you understand the background, the growls become a vital part rather than an obstruction.

I listen to this song and from an interview with Tatiana started to look at the song from the point of view of a fish, the way they are hunted (not just by humanity) Neptune was the god of the seas, the duality of the song makes the way she sings more logical. Rock and Heavy metal has always dealt with the human condition, love/hate, all the differing emotions we go through in life and haw they can have positive and negative effects on us, I have been listening to Heavy Rock and Metal since I was about 8 so 50 years and still listen to it, I also love music that goes into the dystopian world and futuristic nightmares (basically since 1978) When I first heard Gary Numan and Ultravox, not so guitar heavy but just as heavy in it themes, Especially Gary Numan.
