The E-1 is a car I had as my desktop picture about 20 years ago. It's a fantastic design, the driver sits in the middle and it has two outside seats slight behind. This means of course that the drive is right in the middle of the car, so it's very safe - in theory. However, BMW showed the concept off at the 1991 Frankfurt auto show, but it was never mass produced. Their i3 concept was supposed to be available now, but, again, it's a no-show.

A simple enclosed motorcycle with a small 125 -800 cc engine/electric option using a Piaggio MP3 or Yamaha Tricity parallel type tilt front end of forged aluminum ,a simple aluminum bonded,bolted truss frame.Single seat with storage/jump seat.The narrow Yamaha /MP3 type tilt front end can be enclosed in a very narrow body,a electric,hydraulic landing gear with omni wheels could be used to lift the vehicle in a fall and to keep it upright when parked[streamlined motorcycles[narrow bodies] tend to get blown over when parked,so landing gear would keep it stable for both service and parking.my version saves at least 10,000 dollars in costs and eliminates the gyros high cost and 0 defect,with gyros controlling the lean you might loose some of the low speed handling.I believe this could be built for 15,000 dollars

The car and gyros are "on" during the alley test drives. Those guys are not keeping it from tipping. From Forbes, Dec. 2012: "On a test run in an alley across from the office, the vehicle lurches forward to a slow trot as engineers nervously walk alongside it in case the gyroscopes fail and the cycle tips. Attempting to hit street speeds, and even turning, seems a bit too risky at this point..."

I look forward to these finally hitting the market...but I have to say, this is not the first "promo" video for a vehicle of this kind, and I haven't seen one ever come to market. Also, I think having 4 guys walk next to it to keep it from tipping over is an epic fail for a promotional video. Doesn't exactly instill confidence in the design.

lean angle would be 0° and I guess unstable at curves unless they make it significantly lower. if you include all you need to make the body sway while the 2-wheeled axle stays parallel to the ground (carver style), then the gyros are probably lighter and cheaper, but I might be wrong.

Newsflash: Smart is a division of of Daimler AG. You didn't know that did you? Lit has no such backing. Don't mistake what I'm saying, the C-1 is a fabulous bike/car. I love it. They have a chance IF they get a big company to back them (unlikely) and IF they have done enough studies to prove there is even a demand for their bike/car (they haven't). Cool design, eco friendliness, it's all irrelevant if their business model is unworkable.

I've heard the exact same thing being said again and again, and yet - at least in Europe - we have quite a few different eco-friendly-car manufacturers. they're not big household names of course, most are on-demand custom producers but their products reach those who want them none the less. who says the only way to become big is to start big? plenty of products had to spend years to break the market before they became really popular.

also, C-1 is assembled entirely out of parts that are already manufactured for run-of-the-mill your usual cars. there are no parts, other then the outer shell, that they need to manufacture themselves. this drives the costs down significantly and makes the whole project that much more doable. combine that with design that isn't too funky - I mean, C-1 really does look like a love child of Smart car and motorcycle - and there's no reason for them not to succeed.

you guys missed that point,people drive motorcycles,with no exterior protection,it hasn't stopped the millions sold every year.This is a motorcycle with a streamlined body on it,it affords more safety than a standard motorcycle and allows anybody to drive one.People die everyday on motorcycles,cars,about 50,000 a year,the manufactures can't be held responsible for the drivers,we wouldn't have any products if they were held liable for every crash,no matter who's fault it was.
@xBlue74112 жыл бұрын
The c-1 goes 125 mph.Thats just as fast as some sports bikes, and faster than most cars. I only said change the look to make it more appealing. I did not say anything about changing its performance in order to make it "suicidal". The main reason that motorcycles are dangerous for commuting is because they are hard to see. The c-1 is just as small as a motorcycle. It may be safer because you are in a cocoon but head on collision, people pulling out in front of you, people turning into your lane.

If the c-1 was able to do 210+ mph, then that would be encouraging reckless driving. Most sport bike riders or any motorcyclist are extremely safe drivers (some of the best drivers in fact) because they always have to drive safe and pay attention in order to stay alive. They have a bad name because of the idiots who buy sport bikes for the speed and power and then do wheelies down the highway (not because of how the motorcycle looks). Ninja 250 is a top seller bike, but its no faster than a car.

I'm pretty sure that this still has potential and could have become a viable means of personal transport, but I suspect that as Kapil Madhan commented it's possibly been shelved for the reasons he said. What is needed are not necessarily uber-linked, self-driving, designer-fashioned cars even if they're as gorgeous as such concepts are often shown to be, but rather a means of transport that offers a level of road occupancy akin to that of a motorbike so that the stigma of congestion can be addressed. If such a vehicle offered the convenience and safety of a modern car then all the better and if such a vehicle were electric powered too then the recipe is looking good.This is where the C-1 was on course to be but alas is no more...
