I own the EVH and gig with it almost every weekend. It’s plenty loud and it’s mic’d anyway. I get sparkly cleans almost as good as a fender amp with it with the gain at 9 o’clock. And the Distortion is amazing and clear and articulate. I’m looking for a good back up or to change it up now and again and now strongly considering the PRS. Just concerned that the distortion is a little too metal for what my band does. Anyway great video man!

I bought one of these about 3 years ago and I still love it. With a Boss GE-7 pedal in the loop I can get sounds that remind me of a Mesa Mark IIC+ I used to have about 12 years ago. It's probably the closest thing I've ever played through since. The little Joyo Bantamp Zombie with a noise gate, compressor and eq in the loop is also pretty insanely brutal for it's size.

I own the MT15 and its a beast of an amp! I got it when it first came out and sold a Mesa Boogie 4 times the price tag to pay for it because I preferred the sound! I used to own the DSL20, it's a great sounding amp for the money, but it kinda encroaches a bit on the high gain territory. It's not a bad thing by any means, but if you want that "classic Marshall' sound, I'd probably think twice about it. The MT15 does the high gain thing better for me. I sold the DSL and got a JCM800 studio, and it's a perfect compliment to the PRS.

Just got the MT15, and I've owned the EVH. The EVH is a good amp, but I prefer the MT. I didn't get it for the cleans, but I'm playing clean more often than usual because it sounds so good. The red channel is superb, beautiful tight punchy low end, without the fizz, which let down the evh for me

@Rushtallica 2 жыл бұрын
@@JP-pf1nj I often just sit a little further away from the amp or cut down the gain a little (which I like for more articulation, anyway). But for serious chugging and at higher volumes, a noise gate can be a good thing, at least on rhthms. If you play a style like djent, a noise gate is a must, along with something like a scrunchee muting the strings near the headstock.

I enjoyed the video. I have the evh lunchbox and I love it. I play clean a greater percentage of the time and when I do go the distortion route I like the sound of a really overdriven Marshall sound. So the evh is perfect for me. I think I go about getting my clean sound differently than you and likely a lot of others also. To me your clean sound is a lighter crunch sound and you are rolling off your volume. I turn the gain down until there is no crunch even playing the bass string hard with the guitar volume fully on. Set this way the evh lunchbox is incredibly good. In my opinion. With my pedal board and the 2 channels on the evh I can get all the sounds I want. I really appreciate your video. My friend is really interested in the prs and the Marshall for that matter. Lol. So I look forward to trying my evh beside the prs and see how it goes.

It appears at least over here in the U.S. that Marshall has replaced the DSL-15H with the DSL-20HR which is 20W instead of 15, has an effects loop, and does its low power mode differently. Though I see the DSL-20HR for sale as new on some web sites, Marshall's own web site only shows it in a combo format, which seems confusing to me. I have a DSL-15H which I purchased in 2017 as my first tube/valve amp, and I quite like it but have wondered how the DSL-20HR compares to it tonally.
@jasper_of_puppets
@jasper_of_puppets Жыл бұрын
I think the newer 20HR is far superior. One of the big differences is they changed the clean channel's voicing to be much more balanced with the overdrive channel. With the older DSL15, the clean channel would be way too bassy and boomy. A huuuge problem for live use because the amp only has a single, shared EQ. They also dialed back a little bit of the fuzz and excessive gain of the overdrive channel. It's still got plenty of gain for metal, but it's a much more useable range with the control knob. The DSL15 had an unnecessary amount of gain, even by metal standards.

Would love to hear the Marshall DSL20H (2 x EL34, with both Presence AND Resonance, and Effects Loop) in this mix. The DSL20H can sound way bigger than the DSL15H and I think it'd give the PRS a real run for the money in many people minds, as it seems as many people think the PRS is the king. I personally like the DSL15H or DSL20H over both the PRS and the EVH. If you use a clean Klon clone to push the Marshall's, no contest. I find it a bit strange that you guys chose the DSL15H in this comparison, instead of the far more comparable DSL20H. The Friedman JJ is (which is WAY more money) is the lunchbox that beats the DSL20 (and the PRS), but at the price of the JJ you're looking at the Marshall Studio Classic/JCM800, and you can't go wrong with either.

Well, it was done a while ago but it still stands as relevant for a good value valve amp....and I agree with the PRS as choice...it also has two valves for the power amp and it comes with pedal and cover which, is just about right....most of the other buggers want you to spend more to get one....and finally, you simply cannot compare the look of it, the others look like made with an axe in comparison. Nice video Thank you! 🤟

I didn't care for the Marshall or the EVH 5150, it could've been the setting: referring to Low - Mid and High. But no matter what, when I heard the PRS MT-15, I said Wow! That's my choice 100%. I never knew PRS could make a lunchbox amp sound that good, perhaps Mark Tremonti had a lot of input into the amp's design? As a note: Zooming-in the camera to see the settings knobs when you were talking about them would've helped a ton...

I realize you guys don't really specialize in these amps, but it would be nice to hear what they sound like with the gain dimed to know how far they can go. If you're going to review high gain amps, show us how much gain is on tap, even if just briefly.
@sawyerc.6033
@sawyerc.6033 2 жыл бұрын
The thing about that is, just because controls go to 10 doesn't mean they should be used there. Most any amp I've ever played through would sound like garbage with the gain dimed out. Too much gain kills definition and clarity on tube amps, and will take tone from cranked, saturated, and beautiful, to straight garbage almost instantly. Some older amps needed to be dimed to achieve saturation and breakup. (This is the reason master volume controls later became such a huge thing) Modern amps on the other hand, do indeed still benefit from being cranked up a bit, but its not at all necessary or even desirable to dime them out. Most amps today have a "sweet spot" and if you take the gain up any higher than that they just get over-compressed, fizzy, and lose any character they may otherwise retain when dialed in properly. That being said, it's worth mentioning that in truth these videos are advertisements. The ultimate goal (beneath the clever tactics like using "review" in the titles) is for them to jump up sales. I spend alot of time watching guitar stuff on KZbin and I have yet to see a single "review" by a guitar sales company in which the gear was made to look like anything less than God's gift to guitarists. Even when they do comparisons like this one, they are very careful not to make any product out to be the "bad" one, or a poor choice. They only talk about what each piece of gear does well (or what the company who designed/engineered the gear paid them to say it does well), and if it sucks at something, they just leave that out of the video entirely. Dimed out gain controls sound like S%$#, and it is because of this that you will never see it done on a review video. At least not one produced by companies who's livelihoods depend upon guitars, amps, and other related gear being sold in good numbers.
@kitoyobeni1
@kitoyobeni1 2 жыл бұрын
@@sawyerc.6033 The review shouldn't only be about setting the amp for its best tone; the range of gain is important to many players. Same reason why high gain amps should also be tested for as clean a tone they can provide as well.

The thing about the MT15 is it actually is pushing approximately 25 watts full out and about 12 watts low wattage setting. The clean channel and the lead channel handle pedals quite nicely although the lead channel can get noisy somewhat imo. I have the MT15 and can’t stop playing it at this point. Considering getting another one for dual set up rigs with two 4x12 cabs. I feel it has been a game changer for me. Also want to get a soldano slo 30 but they are financially out of reach for me at this point in time. I have a couple of Marshal amps and have had them as my main amps over the years. So for me going that route is appealing and familiar. The last couple years I’ve been using a modified Carvin belaire and a Fender hot rod deville in tandem. It’s a brutally good rig with several overdrive options at my feet. Utilizing the effects loops with eq and delay and modulation makes it sound Humongously large and wide. Plenty of head room and articulation and can overtake the drummer. lol, I like that. A lot. We were auditioning for a bass player and I chased one guy off because it was too much for him to handle and compete with.

You totally could, it's small in stature but not in sound and grunt!

Have to be honest, totally turned off with the Marshall. It just sounded awful, through great headphones too. Did not expect that. The EVH was alright. I could see me having fun with it. The PRS is by far the winner. Quite easily. Can't find anything to dislike about it.

I realy dislike, that Marshall decided to put on the 2 extreme modes on small DLS head and next step is 100w head. On combo, there is 40 version with all 4 modes.

Dsl20 sounds much better than the dsl15. But for the money the mt15 is the way to go.

well you are wrong about the cleans on evh, you can get a very good fender type of clean sound effortlessly from that amp, the problerm with the amp thats worth to mention for the bedroom player is. its just too fucking loud.

Where the reverb that's a little rude. Even all the heavy amps years ago all had reverb what's going on
