He is indeed, and we can't spare those; is it already almost two weeks since Neil Peart passed? Phillips may not have reached the stratospheric status of the latter, what with being considered the best of the best and all that, but no need to be a god to be damn good and Phillips is damn good.

Simon is if the late Neil Pert went more into fusion
@kavemankarl25884 жыл бұрын
@@metalinl-a1128 You may be right. I find it unfortunate that Rush, a band known to flirt with many a genre, never experimented with a more jazzy rock, or even just with wind instruments, be it just for kicks. I would be very surprised .if none of the three mastered a sax (for example), clarinette, flute even. Peart's robust yet disciplined style would have served him well in fusion. But Rush was known for keeping very tight schedules, I guess they had to draw the line somewhere. Pity for Peart to have worked so hard, piled up so many millions of dollars and then pass while his dream retirement palatial home was receiving the finishing touches. He had planned to study philosophy on a quiet domain he had acquired in Quebec near the studio where Rush had recorded their best-produced material.

Hey Little Big Beat, it’s very true. Composition comes from Piano, Guitar, etc. When Guitarist write, pianist write, it’s the origin listeners are use too. Drummers sometimes heavily compose for drum with emphasis on beats and rhythm with melody either missing or thin. Simon is rich in sound, coming from funk, jazz, and fusion. Love it! Come to the SF Bay Area and share it please.

Simon who's a right hander was inspired by Cobham who was a left hander who played a right hand kit so Simon developed the abilty to play the high hats like a left hander. The crazy thing though about Simon is he keeps the ride cymbal on the right and plays it like a right hander when playing it. Left hand drummers put the ride on the left by the high hats and play it left handed like the high hats. Simon has true independence of the left and right hands. It's a phenomenal achievement. I know of no other drummer who does this.
@a.nobodys.nobody23 күн бұрын
@@robertginsburg8113 as a lefty, I've always kept my ride on the right... but i use an electronic set so I'm a bit more limited. Doesn't Carter Beauford do the same?
@robertginsburg811323 күн бұрын
@a.nobodys.nobody Carter Beauford has his ride cymbal on the left above the high hats like Cobham, Lenny White, William Kennedy and all the other lefties I've seen playing right hand kits. I'm right handed and tried doing what Simon does but found it very difficult and abandoned it out of frustration. If you can do it then more power to you. It's obvious Simon didn't give in and mastered it. It shows a level of ambidexterity that has advantages mentally as well as physically.

The timing, ambidexterity, and out of this world musicianship shown here by Simon Phillips once again showcase his truly unique set of skills. Simply put, one of the best. I am really embarrassed to post this but why not be honest. I have been listening to a lot of this music via Spotify lately. In fact, Protocol 4 has become one of my favorite recordings. The thing is that the music is generally so guitar based I thought Simon was a guitar player. This is the first time that I have actually looked for a video to see what these guys actually look like after listening to Protocol 4 probably 50 times in a row from beginning to end. As I started this video I was thinking, wow that drummer is really awesome too (haha). So that's it, I admit it. As a Keyboard player and a huge Elektric Band fan (rest in peace Chick) I am very familiar with Dave Weckl. But, Simon is another drummer that I have grown to love although I did not even know that he is the drummer. This music is seamless and the musicianship is so high. I am so happy that I have found these wonderful masterpieces.
