I really wish this episode acknowledged that Rainbow did have a point about her parents being overbearing. Like yes, it's sad that Scootaloo has absent parents, but being on the other extreme can be just as harmful, or even worse in some cases. Kinda a missed opportunity right there.

Going from this and other episodes, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the intent but in the process of writing the message got lost. For some reason the scripts of different episodes got heavily altered throughout the writing process leading to inconsistencies such as this.

it reminds me of the episode where Rainbow has to fit with the Wondervolts but they laugh at her and she doesn't like it because it reminds her of being bullied, and they continue even though she asks them to stop, because yes Dash expresses pretty clearly when something upsets her so I don't know why they keep acting like it's okay. In the end, it is always her who is supposed to have a more understanding attitude with them, that it was she who exaggerated the situation, when technically the effort should be made on both sides.

I feel like the message here was handled poorly. Yes, it's great to support your kids, but Rainbow's parents were not only overbearing, but obnoxious and notably bothering the other audience members. Her parents should be excluded if they can't attend her events without behaving inappropriately. I hate when the use of absent parents is used to justify poor or toxic parents. Scootaloo's situation does not mean Rainbow's problem is invalid.

Exactly this! I hate when trauma and experiences are devalued because someone is worse. Just because Rainbow Dash isn't orphaned or neglected doesn't mean that what she went through was ignorable and in fact good compared to Scootaloo.

As someone who’s had a difficult relationship with their parents for a long time, the way this episode ends infuriates me so much. Sure, Dash lashing out at her parents wasn’t the best way to solve the problem, but it’s pretty realistic for someone to not want to tell off their parents and then get so frustrated they end up lashing out. The way it ends feels like the problem was never fixed and her parents will just keep being overbearing. If they wanted the end to make sense, have Dash apologize for having lashed out and then her parents apologize as well for not realizing they were upsetting her. They were more at fault here than she was.

Yea.. that has always been one of my biggest "wtf" moments of the show. How RD didn't know Lighting Dust on sight. Also, there is the whole age thing. Going by this episode, RD was only a few years behind most of the ponies we see, yet in show she looks around the same age. (Derpy being a example of this, Spitfire another)

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed Derpy’s flight abilities got worse as her eyesight worsened, it made me feel so bad for her. Although the best part for me is that in the episode “Where the Apple Lies” it’s revealed that Derpy actually had eye surgery later in life, but it simply didn’t work because she is too powerful.

This episode is honestly one of the worst in the show in terms of its messaging. Placing the entire blame on Dash and claiming she's some ungrateful child squandering her parents support is a really, REALLY gross thing to imply ngl. As someone who grew up with overbearing parents, having them constantly breathing down your neck and refusing to acknowledge when they're making you uncomfortable is a horrid feeling. Scootaloo's rant makes sense in the context that she's a straight up child and her parents being mostly absent due to work, but to present that as morally correct when Dash has very real problems with her parents refusing to acknowledge a boundary until she literally yells at them is just straight up wrong

The rock bottom moment of this episode for me was when Rainbow Dash's parents commented about Rainbow Dash's appreciation show being embarrassing. The opportunity for the writers to patch this episode was handed to them on a platter--Rainbow Dash could have replied saying that's how they kept making her feel, and once they understood that, from there they could have struck a deal that they could cheer her on all they wanted behind closed doors so long as they toned it down in public. 30 extra seconds max. But nope, that was just left as a cheap joke and Rainbow Dash was still depicted as being 100% in the wrong for being upset that her parents were trampling all over her boundaries. That scene should have been worth like 10 sins.

Coincidentally enough, a larer episode (The one that brings us Starlight and Sunburst's parents) would do this moral better because both sides actually are at fault and do apologize, whereas only Rainbow Dash gets the blame and she gets no apology for it. This episode might be a guilty pleasure where it's REALLY bad on a moral standpoint and gets it wrong fundamentally but I can't help but find enjoyment in watching the episode anyway.

Whereas this episode says that *ONLY* Rainbow Dash is in the wrong for getting annoyed at her parents. Making the moral VERY one-sided. At least TPM, there was no right or wrong person, as both parties equally contributed to the fall here.

i feel like this episode could've shown sympathy to both sides equally. Rainbow dash was very justified in her frustration with her parents, but they also were just trying to be supportive. Rainbow did tell her parents off rudely, but I don't mind the part where she does that it was an act of her emotions, but yes of course that is not how you tell someone off, the part where it annoyed me was when they acted like she was the only one in the wrong, and made her give this giant apology. This episode could've been the relationship parents and children have when it comes to communication. Your parents embarrass you, you want to yell at them, but instead responsibly communicating your issues is the way to go. As someone who has had these sorts of issues with my own parents, maybe not them embarrassing me but just feeling like I couldn't call them out on their behavior because they were my parents, who you should respect, I think it would've been important for Rainbow to give them a stern talk especially since she isn't even little anymore, she's an adult who should be able to have issues with what her parents were doing. Even if this is my little pony we're talking about, that small change could've been very beneficial in aiding an interesting narrative in a simple way for a kids show.

The linen closet got me. There was a linen closet in my childhood bedroom at my childhood home as it was built in the 50s and wasn’t really properly designed to be a family home which it was intended to be. They built the bathroom to small for one so they stuck it across the way which became my room. At least I was closest to the bathroom and bring stuff from the closest to the bathroom with out too much back and forth.

This episode really brought home just how much RD has suffered over the years. Imagine being emotionally suffocated while growing up. It's like trying to be a comedian with the audience laughing at all your jokes no matter how bad they are! When you are mindlessly praised for every little thing, you can't learn from your mistakes and thus grow. As grandmaster Yoda has said "Failure is the greatest teacher." It's no wonder RD is so loyal to her friends as they call her out on it when she screws up even going to great lengths like in Mare do well as an example! When her friends do give praise, she knows it is genuine! She very likely did not date in high school so she would not have to expose a colt to her parents over praising. Of course this likely led to unfounded rumors about her as girls can be cruel to anyone/anypony who does not fit in with the popular clicks. I was in an abusive foster home and did not date so as not to expose any girl to the abuser so I can see RD doing the same out of loyalty to a potential guy she might have been interested in. Makes you wonder about what human RD must go through as she is an expert guitar player, soccer player, band leader, part time job holder as well as trying to get her friends to be super heroes. Likely the only time she talks to her parents is during supper and even then, she's got to dash!

Overbearing parents ARE a problem and it IS abusive to an extent..It’s harmful on kids and suffocating (I actively avoided dating after being pressured into having a “crush” on a guy who then turned sour on me after finding out from my BFF, it actively scarred me so bad I couldn’t date for a decade at minimum..I spent my teens terrified of dating..it all happened because everyone was overbearing going all “ooo are you 2 a thing??” all the time..it forced me to artificially like him because I felt like I had to). The fact the show treated it as if it was fine and dash was overreacting is a huge problem; it actively told kids in a similar situation that their feelings are wrong, they’re ungrateful brats and should stop fussing..that can hurt a kid.

This episode made me really think Scootaloo was an Orphan. I am so glad that she's not, since we already have Applebloom who is an orphan. But for Scootaloo to be the orphan, and to turn out as this confident outgoing sporty character was a touching story to me. I guess if she had been an orphan, it would have been seen as cruel to also have her be handicapped. Huh. Apple Bloom is an orphan and Scootaloo is handicapped. Sweetie Bell is.....???? This show favors unicorns.

@@forestofwolves The wiki says the parents appear multiple times but no one really remembers them. I have the feeling that early on in production that they may have potentially wanted to tell a story about teen pregnancy. Imagine an arc about a young woman raising her daughter with little or no support of her parents and the child not knowing that they're not sisters. It's been done in media many times before. The show Andi Mack, a Disney show, is a perfect example of this. Teen pregnancy stories are not typically told to this young of an audience, especially one that is intended for young girls. I feel like the showrunners could have eventually wrote this arc in the same way they did AJ's parents'. However, the more likely scenario is that their parents were never relevant and only appeared to end the speculation around Rarity being Sweetie Belle's mom. I feel like not doing so could have cost the show and fandom a lot of bad publicity and the fandom needed no more of that at the time. Their first appearance is season two's "Sisterhooves Social" btw, so 2011, peak Brony media coverage.

Everyone hates it because it completely botched the message…Dashies parents weren’t being wholesome they were being obnoxious and overbearing, it went against her boundaries (and the rest in the crowd) and they NEVER are depicted as wrong for this outside Rainbow saying they are..It normalizes toxic parenting. Supporting your kids is ok but constantly supporting them in massive obnoxious ways (that could be dangerous even) even if they lost (celebrating as if they won) can be very bad for a kid growing up..Dash being treated as wrong for disliking their behavior is a huge mistake on the show writers part

Remember kids, if your parents obsess over you too much, you have to take it and not make a grown middle aged man and woman cry as a result. I mean i prefer Windy and Bow to Scootaloo's parents, but this was NOT a good way to introduce RD's parents. It's almost like Dash had to fight for her independence. I like what the community did with Bow and Windy and made them less (for lack of a better word) stalkerish when it comes to their daughter and instead make them probably the best parents in the series not counting Celestia or Granny Smith.

As irritating as her parents were, Rainbow came across as stupidly tone-deaf in this episode. Applejack: Wow, Rainbow! Your parents annoy you? Gee how tragic. This is why I maintain that Zipp Storm is a superior version of Rainbow. She has her flaws, but lack of brains isn't one of them. Too often, Rainbow fit into the "dumb jock" mold.

Scootaloo's like, "why are you annoyed I brought your parents to this restricted area without anyone's permission as they embarrass you in front of your colleagues? You should be more grateful. All I have is my aunts who compliment and support me constantly in a health manner that's not overbearing, but I didn't come from them so their support doesn't matter".

Their support is shown to be obnoxious at times and in some scenes, you can see the audience is bothered. Honestly, I dislike that Scootaloo is in this episode at all because it's so obvious she's just used to make Rainbow's issue with her parents invalid.

But even if her aunts were neglectful parents: a family that's all the way on the other extreme isn't healthy either. In some cases it can be even worse. "Parental Glidance" is one of my favorite RD episodes! It was nice to finally meet the parents of another member of the Mane 6! Though I could kinda understand RD's frustrations with her parents being supportive, Because as this episode explains while it's good for parents to be supportive of their children there is such a thing as being too supportive and no child wants their parents to be that supportive. But anyway, It was interesting to learn what RD's childhood was like and the look on Scootaloo's face when she saw the room with all of RD's trophy's was hilarious. Speaking of Scootaloo I could see where she was coming from after RD yelled at her parents because Scootaloo's parents were never there for her when she needed them, So she didn't know what getting parental support was like. But at least everything worked out in the end.

Ya know, I guess maybe it would have taken too much time or something but I feel like it's a sin to have Spitfire and Lightening Dust present with Rainbow Dash as foals. With the way those three have interacted in the past, you'd think they would have never met before. Plus, RD competed in a YOUNG fliers competition at the start of the show. Considering how Spitfire placed in those flashbacks, it's hard to imagine her being the same age. Unless the competition allowed for different ages, though we've seen how younger/older foals look and those ponies all looked around the same age for sure. With how Lightening Dust's personality is, you'd think she would have been pretty hostile to Rainbow Dash at the Academy. I doubt she'd quickly forget any flier who was able to actually beat her at a race.

An episode that’s been praised by many and folks let me just say “I DONT GET IT!” I mean for one thing the episode Shames Rainbow Dash for how she treated her parents except she’s ACTUALLY in the right. If anyone’s to blame it’s Scootaloo for bringing RD’s parents without consulting her. Yes RD was harsh but it’s not her fault this episode was messed up. It all felt one sided.
