Yes! Great tip J! I have heard that. I just didnt have it in my studio and didnt want to have to trudge back to my house to get it, haha. The good thing about the Laguna wax emulsion is that it seems to wash off a lot easier than some of the oilier wax options.

@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom and Kat, I did bisque fire it to cone 04. then I put Amaco C-11 Clear over top of it and fired it to cont 5 with a 5 minute hold. Cone 6 would have worked too, but I used Chamois glaze along the top and bottom edges which dont like the cone 6 as much. Hope that helps.

I tried a similar technique with oxides a few months ago, but was a bit disappointed as some oxides burned in the high temperature firing. I'll try again with underglazes, thanks for the video !
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
I hear you about the oxides. They are not as predictable when fired which can result in some really cool effects, but if you are looking for consistency, the underglazes are the better choice for sure. Go for it.

Wow!! How beautiful!! I have a really odd wax that I bought that you have to leave on for at least 12 hours to dry then it fires off. I think I’m going to just melt some candles and use that. Have you ever tried latex? Thanks sooo much for your videos and all of this knowledge.
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
Hey Michele! There are different waxes for sure. I have heard some people say they use crayons or even melt crayons in a heat gun, haha, but I cant imagine it would give you a solid coat where you need it. I like the Laguna emulsion wax. It dries faster and isnt as greasy and hard to clean. That said, i still have a love/hate relationship with wax because i am so clumsy with it, haha. Happy potting and thanks for watching
@shirleycirio6897 Жыл бұрын
I absolutely love this vase! 😊I have to pay very close attention when using wax, invariably smudging along the way.😏 How long did the complete process take on this vase? Six plus hours to throw, dry, trace, paint, wax, carve?🤔
@annruel9142 Жыл бұрын
Hey Shirley! I didnt keep track of how long it took, really, but I can tell you that it sure didnt take as long to do as the usual pieces that I create. I threw it pretty quickly the waited util it was leather hard to decorate so ...overnight. I did the rest of the decorating for the camera. The longest part was waiting for everything to dry. I just had to be really sure that my uderglaze coats were solid and not streaky so I did take time to really check and make sure that my underglaze was spot on, applying underglaze if I thought it might not be solid enough.... before putting on the glaze. Im a bit fanatical about that.
@mjceramics5552 Жыл бұрын
I just love this one Ann! Love this technique, although it looks very time consuming! I've avoided wax because people say it gives off fumes in the kiln. Is the odor really that bad? My kiln room sits close to a neighbor's property and I don't want the odor to travel to their window!
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
Hey Mj. It will give off fumes yes so I wouldnt be in the kiln room when it is burning off, but the fumes from this wax at least dont seem to linger long. At least I didnt notice any residual smells lingering in my studio. I guess that also depends on how much wax you are burning off too. I have a small kiln and dont run many pieces at one time so this load only had one with wax in it. You might want to test your wax on one piece in the kiln and see if you think it would be too offensive for your neighbor.

If not carving, can you use the under glaze and wax to create patterns on a bisque piece? Just learning about under glazes. This was a wonderful creative and informative video! Ty!
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
Hey Maura. If you arent going to do carving there is no need to use the wax. Just paint with underglazes and you will be good to go. :-) Thanks for watching!

@@annruel1982 On bisque? Just to be sure I got it. Thank you Ann!
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
@@maurad5378 Hey Maura. Feel free to ask any questions. I actually prefer to paint on greenware. If I mess up when I am painting, it is easier to clean up on greenware than when the piece has been bisqued. That said, I work on a non grog very fine porcelain so that if I mess up, I can sponge it off and it basically just erases it. If you are working with a clay that has any grog in it, you wouldnt be able to do that because the fine clay on the top would wash away revealing the rough grog underneath leaving your piece pitted and overworked. So take that into consideration if you want to start painting on pottery. Actually I have some workshops on Vimeo on painting if you are interested that go into a lot more detail than these short videos. The link is in the description section under the video. Happy potting.

"I had a what?!" Always enjoyable to hear that you two really do have fun together. 😂 Spectacular outcome here. I really like the colors you chose. What do you do with the clay birds from carving where the wax is? Do you just reclaim it with the assumption the wax amount is too minascule to matter? Or do you toss it?

Yeah, unfortunatly anything that might have wax on it goes out!

Before doing the darker blue underglaze, when you carve through the moths, the carvings look light blue, not the clay body color. How is that possible? Or am I seeing that wrong 🤔
