I was excited to hear about it coming out localized and given an HD lift, but I was hesitant because I didn't think it was a game I needed to play again. Then I gave the demo the shot and good lord the quality of life improvements blew me away. The menu was colorful instead of a fixed color background of a character. All the skills and items had explanations attached to them so you didn't use them blindly and hope something sticks. The graphics made everything look gorgeous, even the battlefields that had enemies just as animated despite their obviously larger block sizes (playable characters being 1x1, most enemies being 1x2 or 2x2). I feel this is gonna be a rare game that is hard to find down the line due to being a very different kind of RPG, so I bit the bullet and preordered it physical. Can't wait to get it!

One of the great mysteries with the HD2D style though, is how FF6 hasn't gotten this treatment. It just seems tailor-made for it, but instead we got 1 scene in the Pixel Remaster..? Maybe Square has bigger plans for an eventual FF6 remake -- and I am totally okay with that too -- but it's a bit baffling how all these older SNES games are getting this attention, while the two most beloved and revered games on the system (FF6 and Chrono Trigger) get left behind. i.e. All the games I can think of off the top of my head that have gotten remakes from the SNES so far: Secret of Mana (although not a good remake), Trials of Mana, Live A Live, Front Mission 1 & 2 (wasn't the first one supposed to come out this summer?).

Fantastic review. Hits on all the aspects of the game that are great while still recognizing it has some aspects left over from its original version that some people aren't going to enjoy. What I find interesting though is that the most frequent complaint I hear is that each chapter is over too fast and that people don't get invested in the characters. To me this just says that the premise is good enough to warrant a sequel with longer, more fleshed out chapters. I personally loved the original, and this remake is practically a dream come true for me, not just in all of the improvements, but also the simple fact that I can OWN it now. I think the only thing that will top this for me is the (hopefully) inevitable Chrono Trigger HD-2D remake someday.

Dude.. everything about this game looks awesome! The sprites! The world/settings…It’s just the epitome of the kind of old school rpg style that appeals to me the most. I do kind of prefer action rpgs over turn based, but when turn based combat is done right, like it was done in earthbound for instance, I can totally get with it. As long as it’s streamlined, fast paced, not over complicated, and doesn’t require excessive grinding…But if I could have it my way, I’d make it a hack and slash, action rpg, with combat similar to secret of mana or Zelda … that’s just me though.. I HATE excessive, random enemy encounters, where you run into another enemy with like every 2 steps you take 😂 So many great rpgs were ruined for me due to that being a feature of the games…but I digress…I really need to check this out.. by the way, I’ve never played the original before so this is all new to me. @topazlight15862 жыл бұрын
I played almost all of the original SNES version via [REDACTED], and I can say without a shadow of doubt in my mind that it is an incredibly unique JRPG that frankly pushes the boundaries of what a JRPG can even be. It has a lot of the traditional trappings, sure; level-ups, a party-focused command battle system, items and equipment... but it puts its own unique spin on nearly all of it. The unique battle system hybridized with grid-based SRPG gameplay, with an emphasis on areas of effect and with MP replaced with different charge times for each ability. The equipment system making most pieces of equipment compatible with multiple different slots. The anomalously-small level scaling, where, although you CAN go up to level 99, once a character hits level 16, they're pretty much good to go for endgame in that department. Plus, little touches like robot party members Taroimo and Cube being able to use different skills by equipping certain attachments, the Near Future chapter containing an actual literal Live A Live-original '90s mecha anime opening theme, Masaru Takahara being a... frankly rad as hell Monk + Blue Mage hybrid, and being able to pick one out of three distinct party members to carry forward from the Imperial China chapter. The anthological structure is, of course, the game's calling card, and for good reason. You have chapters spanning all over time and all across the planet, from an age before the advent of human language to the far future, from China to Japan to America to a globe-trotting gauntlet of boss battles. The Twilight of Edo chapter is absolutely bonkers dense for no reason and I love it. I had no idea how to segue into that but I couldn't just not mention it. I don't want to spoil the specifics for anybody reading this who's still not aware of how Live A Live ends, but there is still more to do after completing all seven character chapters, and it's a doozy that's well worth the journey there. The game isn't flawless, of course; it can be more obtuse than it needs to be at times, and the writing can be sexist in places, but on the whole, I think it's definitely a game worth experiencing, and it's a phenomenal counterpoint to the notion that all JRPGs are essentially the same.

So question for those who have played it: how does leveling work in this exactly? This was always something I was confused about with this game. Its a JRPG but with parts you can play in any order and at any time, so that sounds like each individual part alone would be short (one 7th of the total game time) and, possibly, quite simple without much leveling and without anything carrying over. So does it feel like playing 7 different mini JRPGs, like a short story collection (or like Kirby Super Star for those who played that), or does it feel like plating Octopath where, despite being 8 stories, its all actually quite unified and levelling and items carry over?
@eeeh96932 жыл бұрын
You keep the leveling from the initial chapters for the unified 8th chapter! You will probably end up level 8-10 at the end of the time chapters and about level 16-17 for the end of the final 8th chapter. If you aren’t level 16 by the final boss you will prolly want to grind to it on at least one character to unlock their final skill but you most likely will end up there naturally bcs leveling is pretty well paced for an older JRPG especially
@topazlight15862 жыл бұрын
Characters' stats and equipment loadouts are carried over from their home chapters into the finale. You can TECHNICALLY go all the way up to level 99, but no character learns any skills past level 16, and your stats by level 16 should be sufficient for the final boss, as well. What level each character is likely to be at the end of their chapter varies. Pogo and Akira will probably each be somewhere in the 8~10 range. Oboromaru and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the Earthen Heart Shifu's level can vary considerably depending on how you approached their chapters. Sundown Kid, Masaru, and Cube's chapters are not really set up in a way that allows them to level up, so they'll come into the final chapter more or less at base power, though Masaru can learn all his skills from the opponents he faces during his chapter. I'd say it feels like five mini-JRPGs, one town's arc from a larger-scale JRPG, a sci-fi horror adventure game, and an MMA-themed Mega Man game but it's just the bosses and you fight them in Live A Live's combat system. These do all converge for the finale, but there's really no story reason to play the initial seven chapters in any particular order; they're all standalone experiences. It actually is kinda like Kirby Super Star, honestly, if Kirby Super Star had a secret final game where the Kirbies from all the previous games teamed up in a way that carried over what you did in each previous game... somehow. The playtime of each individual chapter ranges from, like... I wanna say 30 minutes to maybe up to 3 hours depending on the chapter and how you play it? It all adds up to a decently-sized game, I wanna say in the 15~25 hour range depending on how much optional content you decide to tackle. At least, that's decently-sized by my reckoning. Long enough to feel robust and satisfying, but not so long that it starts to overstay its welcome or resort to inserting filler content to achieve its total playtime.

Just my opinion but this is a bit lite for an RPG. It's more like an interactive storybook with specific encounters (some chapters don't really even have combat) and I feel like it should be marketed as such.

I am excited to have a week to get through a chapter or two before Xenoblade 3 comes out. It definitely will be nice to be able to pick up and play. And I love the HD2D. I really think Square should grab all their older games and remake them in a similar fashion.

I was interested by the game but the fear from the demo that the game would be extremely quick and short seems to be confirmed. I guess I'll pass. I'm a bit confused by the decision to put so much effort into the visuals but leaving the gameplay almost intact. I feel the game could have used a bigger rework similarly to Trials of Mana.

Interesting game! Great review! Looking forward to playing it soon! 👊 I'm just struggling with the meaning of the game's title. What does "live a live" mean? Before this review, I was pondering about the pronunciation of it. Great job! ☺️👏

Respectfully, the intro of this review is mistaken. Live A Live did not influence Chrono Trigger. CT and LAL were in development at more or less the same time, and by different teams. They released 6 months apart, and CT’s development began 6+ months before LAL’s. Additionally, CT was the brainchild of “The Dream Team”, of which Tokashi Tokita was not a part.
@topazlight15862 жыл бұрын
Tokita absolutely did work on Chrono Trigger. He wasn't at the time (and still isn't) nearly as big a name as the likes of Sakaguchi, Horii, or Toriyama, so he didn't get the same billing they did for his work on it, but he was very much part of Chrono Trigger's development team. And, considering he worked on both games, I think it's totally possible that his work on Live A Live influenced his work on Chrono Trigger, and very possibly vice-versa, as well.

@@topazlight1586 Hi there. Yep, Tokita was one of three directors on CT and a part of its development. I didn't suggest otherwise. I said he wasn't one of the Dream Team. The Dream Team was Sakaguchi, Horii, and Toriyama, and CT was their brainchild. And yep, it is every bit as possible that CT influenced Live A Live, and considering that it started in development roughly 9 months before LAL did, I would say that is the more likely scenario, personally.

if like me you grew up in the eighties and nineties and saw a preview in a magazine of the original only to find out it would never be released outside japan then yes its worth it to buy the remake. also if you grew up in the last twenty years and have never played a snes game on a original snes then its also a good buy.

Played a translated version ages ago. I'm not a fan of these Saga style games with multiple short stories. They just feel like a mixed bag rather than a cohesive whole.

I'd say the remake is a bit too faithful. You can literally just pick up the walkthrough for the original version and it's gonna be 99.9% identical, including the same annoyances, such as item crafting in the Near Future chapter. If you played the original, it's literally just a graphical/sound update with voice acting and official translation as an added bonus. Also I'm a bit disappointed how the game doesn't really care about people cursing, but has a problem with naming items "cigar" or "whiskey" and changes it to "beef jerky" or something along the lines of "herbal drink".

I'm a bit underwhelmed so far. Just finished the Japan/ninja, china/kung-fu and wild west chapters. Each chapter is so short. It just.... idk. Still very much worth playing. Beautiful art style, and cool ideas. Was HUGELY ahead of its time when it came out.

Like it still don't get me wrong. Just doesn't live up to Triangle Strategy or Octopath. But to be fair, those are brand new games. This is a remake of a decades old classic.

The first 'Live' is a verb the second is the noun, it's pronounced 'Live [here] A Live' but I could be wrong. You are indeed wrong. It’s phonetically spelt out in Japanese as Live (like a live performance, so the adjectival form) and then “a” and then nonsensically Live (adjectival form) again. It throws many Western gamers because we want to make English grammatical sense of it, but unfortunately it makes no English sense, lol. But then, that adds to the charm of it, no? livedoor.blogimg.jp/terashima999/imgs/a/f/afd149be.jpg

Looking forward to playing this one! It's just that I'm finishing Triangle Strategy and I will need to play something else in the middle because they are graphically similar and I need a break from HD2D 😂
