Interesting. I kayak fish the Bay Area and use my decender multiple times every rockfish trip. I have decended dozens of goldeneye, quillies, coppers, gophers, and china's. Try running a single assist hook on those jigs. I lose fewer lings with the assist hooks and hook less of the small rockfish. It's much easier to store them on a kayak as well. They don't get stuck as easily either, although that doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

I had a couple of my brother in law’s and friends brake a few trolling rods while we were salmon fishing at different times! Usually they had a bad habit of tightening the drag because the fish was taking line and it wasn’t coming in easy! I had to explain that is what the drag is for so they get tired out before we net them!!! 4 rods in 12 years of fishing, not too bad.

Have you tried the coast north, of San Simeon. You can launch at Hearst Beach. Head north!! It's a lightly fished stretch and BIG ling come out of there.

If you’re fishing rockfish, the descender has to be set up on a rod. It can’t be in your tacklebox.

I was never scared of sharks when I used to dive and fish off of California, but after I got my masters in ichthyology, I worked for a nonprofit foundation that studied white sharks off of Santa Cruz. The first 16 foot female that swam under the boat... and I now always am looking over my shoulder when diving since then. There are some big, nasty sharks out there. real big. like... you feel like a whale just passed under the boat big.

What’s the regulation on rockfish n lincs? On DFG website it says inshore 20 fathom only till end of September. But I’ve seen several folks out catching them on boats. Is there a specific meaning to inshore fishing? Distance or depth wise? Thanks in advance!

How do you tell California halibut from pacific halibut? I always thought that if you were looking at it right side up with the jaw on the bottom, California halibut was always facing left and the pacific facing right.?

nope. there are subtle differences in head and fin shape. I'm sure you can google up pics of each to compare.

The Pacific Halibut are more diamond shape. All the halibut we catch in the bay area are California Halibut

"Big halibut". You know, that species can weigh up to 90lbs right? I've never seen one that big in Cali personally, but that's the record. I commonly saw 20-30lb halibut when I was a kid (50 years ago), but even those are long gone I guess.

wait... I HAVE seen a 90lb california halibut. It was in an aquarium at Scripps Institute down near San Diego (La Jolla). sucker was estimated to be over 50 years old when I saw it, and that would have been around 40 years ago. I wonder if it is still alive? meh. unlikely.

BTW... the largest relative pressure change is in the last 20 feet to the surface (last 10 even). so yes, descenders are useful even for fish in only 30 feet of water. We used to carry large bore syringe needles to simply bleed the air from fish swimbladders before releasing them. much cheaper and more effective actually. Also, some fish are better at managing quick changes to swimbladder pressure than others, so best to be always prepared for the worst case scenario. If I were you, for legal reasons I would keep a descender on your boat, but use a syringe needle to actually do the job instead. if you do, your release survival rate goes up by over 30%. really really. I'm not just making this up, I saw the data when I was an ichthyologist ages back.

I can verify this is true . I fished commercial shallow water Rockfish for 6 years . Some species are harder to pop too . But if you do it right the survival rate is high.
