In this clip Alan Orr is showing how we pressure test skill levels with Chi Sao while still in live flow. The idea is to work fast and with pressure to see how quickly one can react and solve the problems given. The control and safety are still in place as always. You can still pressure without anybody getting hurt. It just takes higher level skills, which some people don't always see. After this training one can watch back and reflect on what they missed or didn't see or feel in time. Then they can drill that or practice it and try to be more ready for that next time. As the training is always live, next time may be different problems to face, but within this process it is the fast problem solving you are improving, not just the applications. It is more of how we strengthen the mental will to solve and survive and therefore thrive under pressure.

Nice demonstration on this. Not enough of this "overwhelming" and "pressure testing" is going on in many schools.

It's difficult if you don't understand the advantageous and disadvantageous of certain hand positions(I relate it to bjj) and to attack when you have a direct line of attack. It's like playing chess you're either just attacking like a newb or you understand positions like a pro and know how to setup certain strategies. Difference here is the opponent is getting hit and just reacting on instinct. You're at ease because you know exactly where you wanna go whereas as he's trying to catch up and is on the defensive.

Yes, that is correct. It is like chess and knowing your moves ahead and being able to achieve them under pressure is the key

@@alanorrwingchunacademy1302 A very valuable skill or mindset not just in Wing chun or martial arts but life in general. We always face these crisis and sometimes we don't know all the moves but to able to face a challenge it without panicking is something we all should train in some manner. I can see you dominate your opponent but kudos for him for fighting on. As he probably dominates those under him in training. Iron sharpens iron.

Alan, I love your stuff so don't take this comment to heart. I am going to say the following because I want your students to challenge you. Guys and girls, Alan's students, narrow your stance and outplay him with quicker footwork. Flank him and even position to his rear and press his leg with yours. Take a look at 'he who shall not be named' comments on plum flower stepping. Sorry Alan.

Hi Bob, Thanks for taking time to message. The body structure we use is hard for most to see. It is not easy to use footwork when your center is controlled. My students are trying and if you see me roll with people outside of my system then it is the same. What they think they can do, does not happen. The hidden skill is the pressure applied into the opponent. Who is the 'he shall not be named? I have nothing to hide or not talk about. My best Alan

@@alanorrwingchunacademy1302 Mr Force Flow of course! I'm not disrespecting you here, Alan, and am being sincere. All good teachers should wish for their students to surpass them and to actively point out their own weaknesses, so students can exploit them. It is the only way Sifus can really grow. Anyway, I'll say it again, dear Alan's students, get the edge via your footwork and drop the arm bridge to one with your body and preferably to his flank. You can always spin out again once you have struck him. Alan, out of interest, what would you say is your major weakness?

@alanorrwingchunacademy1302 Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob I take no disrespect, I just don't think you understand the full picture. I agree students show become better than a good teacher in time and I do have students that have done better that myself in professional fighting. In terms of pure Wing Chun, I am also still improving, therefore it is hard for my students to pass me yet, plus I train more than all my students still. It will happen one day. My student in the clip is only 18 so why would think he should pass me already? Again, your comments on footwork are incorrect. You can only take the side if you control the opponents balance or if you can take their balance. That has to be achieved before you can do that. Everyone has weakness, it's the opponent's job to find them and take advantage of them. So that's a moving target.

@@alanorrwingchunacademy1302 yes, your students need to learn to delink and decouple from you and to do so faster than that to which you can react. There are exercises to practice that. I was not just referring to the student in that clip but basing my comments after reviewing all your clips of a like kind to date. What are the weaknesses you have identified in yourself, though? Why don't you state them so people know, & can then exploit them and then foster greater growth in yourself? Who cares if other lineages and hostile folk know and then exploit them when you roll! It'd be good for you and from where I am sitting, the only thing perhaps stopping that disclosure is ego? I say that in with all due respects, Alan.

Thanks for your advice. You don't seem to understand my replies. My guys are trying very hard. It is not as easy as you may think. In terms of weaknesses, again you didn't listen. I said one's weaknesses are what the opponent can find. That will change from opponent to opponent.
