I got emotional before watching Derek get his car back that his late Dad worked on. Derek mentioned his grandfather one time and I googled him and saw his Dad had passed away tragically. I felt so bad for Derek and his brothers and family! RIP Gene Bieri! Then as I watched the three parts saw Derek stop in the Restored garage in Texas. I recently got ROKU so I could get KZbin TV for the Sunday NFL Ticket and also am able to watch KZbin on my television now instead of just my computers. I've been watching Derek on a daily basis and now know about Restored and will watch! Thank You everyone for all your amazing talents and work! Jack

The trans fluid coming out of the freeze plug could be from the internal radiator tank having a hole in it and when you guys fired it up the trans started pushing fluid through the cooler lines right into your water I had the same problem with a bronco I was building last year, I know this post is 4 months after you guys put up the video but I couldn’t find a part 2 or another video on it so I figured mossel give you guys the idea just in case you see this somehow, hope this helped

Reading this a little late, but I had the same thing happen as well. 1989 Chevrolet Z24. Antifreeze turned brown and the dealer simply flushed it. I told them it was not normal. 6 months later, the transmission failed. Apparently, transmission fluid was leaking into the antifreeze, and antifreeze was going into the transmission. When repaired, dealer found the coolant line within the radiator had a small hole in it.

Your ballast resistor is to keep the contact points from burning, at least that is what they taught us in auto school back in the early 70's. The resistor should reduce reduce the voltage going to the coil from 12 volts to about 6 or 8 volts when running. there should be a wire from the starter solenoid to the + side of the coil so you have 12 volts for starting. These old engines will run for just about forever if you keep them cool and the oil changed. Great to see another one being saved. Great work Guys!!

Back in 1964, the family purchased a used Bel Air, 6 cylinder with Powerglide transmission. After Dad purchased this vehicle, he watched the oil level carefully in order to ascertain if the motor was an oil burner. As he monitored the oil, he observed that the oil in the oil pan increased. He related his confusion to a service station manager/mechanic who checked the transmission fluid level which was low. The mechanic had observed this phenomenon before and informed Dad that fluid modular(?) valve on the transmission had failed and was leaking transmission fluid into the oil circulating system into the engine. The modulator was replaced, and the family drove the Bel Air for the next 8 years without any problem of transmission fluid moving into the oil pan. Back in 1968, an associate (a fellow student) mentioned that transmission modular value failures often occurred in Chevrolet engines in the early 60’s. PD

Growing up, my family had a lime green with white 'pleated' tail fins '57 station wagon. I loooved that car. It had A/C - 4 windows down and 60 on the speedometer. There were no seatbelts. So, when some rain fell after a prolonged dry spell, the car (with my brother driving) skidded and rolled three times. He said, 'I braced my legs, planted my feet and went for the ride." He came out unscathed. The car didn't. It took care of him. I'm thrilled another one might make it back on the road.

Not to disrespect what these guys do. I'm here because I love old cars. My first car at 15 was a 1967 tempest 3 on the tree. Got me a chilton and started teaching myself. Moved on to a 56 bel-air 2 door post and a 1954 panel truck after that. So all respect to old cars but to blanket state that a young mechanic would be lost in old cars is ignorant.

The transmission cooler in the radiator is broken. Transmission fluid is being pumped into the coolant.

When they had the rear end jacked up and tested the tranny, they put it in drive and the wheel spun trying to take the car forward. At 1:33:47 when they put it in reverse, the wheel still turned forward and they said "it's going in reverse" when it clearly wasn't. Guy said "trying to get in in reverse" and he gets it in A gear and as the wheel turns to drive forward, Derek says "yeah, there goes but it was rolling forward again. I'm watching this two years later so my comment is too late and probably has been said 100 times, but I guess if the great Derek can miss something like that, I'm not at bad as I thought. It was a great video guys.
