The trans fluid coming out of the freeze plug could be from the internal radiator tank having a hole in it and when you guys fired it up the trans started pushing fluid through the cooler lines right into your water I had the same problem with a bronco I was building last year, I know this post is 4 months after you guys put up the video but I couldn’t find a part 2 or another video on it so I figured mossel give you guys the idea just in case you see this somehow, hope this helped

Reading this a little late, but I had the same thing happen as well. 1989 Chevrolet Z24. Antifreeze turned brown and the dealer simply flushed it. I told them it was not normal. 6 months later, the transmission failed. Apparently, transmission fluid was leaking into the antifreeze, and antifreeze was going into the transmission. When repaired, dealer found the coolant line within the radiator had a small hole in it.

Your ballast resistor is to keep the contact points from burning, at least that is what they taught us in auto school back in the early 70's. The resistor should reduce reduce the voltage going to the coil from 12 volts to about 6 or 8 volts when running. there should be a wire from the starter solenoid to the + side of the coil so you have 12 volts for starting. These old engines will run for just about forever if you keep them cool and the oil changed. Great to see another one being saved. Great work Guys!!

Back in 1964, the family purchased a used Bel Air, 6 cylinder with Powerglide transmission. After Dad purchased this vehicle, he watched the oil level carefully in order to ascertain if the motor was an oil burner. As he monitored the oil, he observed that the oil in the oil pan increased. He related his confusion to a service station manager/mechanic who checked the transmission fluid level which was low. The mechanic had observed this phenomenon before and informed Dad that fluid modular(?) valve on the transmission had failed and was leaking transmission fluid into the oil circulating system into the engine. The modulator was replaced, and the family drove the Bel Air for the next 8 years without any problem of transmission fluid moving into the oil pan. Back in 1968, an associate (a fellow student) mentioned that transmission modular value failures often occurred in Chevrolet engines in the early 60’s. PD

I sat and watched every minute of the video, loved it too. Derek is my favourite KZbinr, loads of silly "Derekisms" to make you laugh but you know he's got the skills to pay the bills. As far as collabs go this was brilliant, can't have been that easy to spend 2 hours on camera when you guys don't really know each other, that said I love the live format of your new channel, no one else is doing this and it's a very different vibe to the typical edited out video. God bless from across the pond.

Transmission cooler leak inside radiator for a long period of time. Someone kept topping it off over the years not knowing where it was going. I think I had this happen to some car I had in the past. I was mostly worried about the antifreeze in the transmission fluid. I think it may hav been on a dodge snow commander. And all I did was diagnosis and gave it back to the owner and I think he was going to buy a newer truck

I am thinking the transmission cooler in the radiator has a hole in it pushing ATF into the coolant.

Hey Guys, Great video.....loved that Derek stopped by to give you a hand ! So nice to watch the patience and respectful way you all pitched in and confronted that old car thats been for too long standing ! But you brought her around, sure she was deep sleeping and it must have come as a Big Surprise to her im sure to get another shot of juice down her Ap ! But you got her on the cook now and Im sure you,ll get her back where she belongs....humming down the Highway !

Love you guys! Great episode. Should do more with Derek. Great job on getting the ole tri five running again. I'm thinking trans cooler leak, and its pushing fluid backwards and into the block. Hope ya get it figured out.👍🇺🇸❤

Just found your channel yesterday. Love seeing the old vehicles. When I was little, Dad had a 57 Chevy. Loved that old car. When it finally quit running, Dad parked it in the pasture and it slowly rusted until he sold it. Don't know what happened to it after that.

The amount of time it takes to do the tasks on the video makes me feel alot better about how long it took me back in the day. I feel awesome right now. Having eliminated my failings, I was, at various times, surrounded by gainsayers and detractors. ;)

Derek, good on ya bro, another great collaboration channel choice! You guys created more great, every-man, everyday American automotive history, culture and hobby content and as usual, you educated people about things they probably didn't know about early Chevy's and General Motors engineering, production and history. Excellent content and exposure for BOTH channels, keep it up, Americans love it as automotive history and culture ARE a big part of our country's lifeblood!
