My grandfather was a Lieutenant Commander TBM Avenger pilot on the USS Wasp in World War II and we have his uniform and carrier yearbook and shadow box of his military mementos. I lived close to White Sands Missile Range and Holloman AFB so I grew up watching the Stealth F117A Nighthawks fly. My cousin’s husband was a Blue Angel pilot and now flies for Fed Ex and is about ready to retire.

I saw the F-35 and the F-22 at Oshkosh this year. I have to agree with your assessment of both. Stunning! Their twilight demo was awesome! Burners lit extended 50’ at least behind the cans. You could see the vectored thrust move the flames around. Stunning! Must see.

Great episode! I need to get yours and Hozer's books, I remember reading Flight of the Intruder while I was in High School in the mid 80's and how good I thought it was. And another book that went into such detail I almost thought I would be able to auto rotate a Helo to the ground if I were put in that place. Books have become so underrated; I need to go back to that place of thought.

Wish I could be there with you guys. In fact that sentence kinda sums up my entire career. I came across Mooch's channel purely by chance and stuck around because of all the interesting stories that can be heard here. I don't comment much because among military aviators I'm kind of a pork chop at a kosher wedding. 😳 The only time I ever got to fly a jet myself was in a Viper simulator in the HITL lab at Edwards. I crashed on landing.

Not sure if you have covered this previously on your channel. Any desire to cover the roles of previous airplanes in air wings back in say the late 70's like F14, A6, EA6B, S3, A3, A7, E2C etc vs. the current planes F18, F22 etc? Maybe talk about when and how those older planes were replaced with the newer planes. Love your channel. Was attached to VAQ-132 @ Whidbey and sailed on CVN-69 back in the early and mid 80's. Thanks

@@WardCarroll maybe it's time to consider Diesel electric or Gas Turbine engine powered America Class LHA type carriers but stretch them 900 to 1000 feet and 250 ft plus beam and use the same Island as the Ford Class and give them an angled deck and CATOBAR capabilities but primarily embark F-35Bs and 1 squadron of F-35Cs squadrons for CAP. We have to do something as a Ford Class carrier takes 5 years to build and America Class only 3. We need something that fast attack long range capability and a modified America might answer the mail at half the cost of a Ford. When I was a young Marine in Vietnam we were for a time embarked on the USS Valley Forge to conduct reinforcement ops off the coast of South Vietnam. As you know she was a WWII Essex Class Carrier that was converted to an LPH because she did not get the SCB-27 or SCB 125A conversions and mods and was kept pretty much in her WWII configuration although she did not get commissioned until a year after WWII ended. She saw extensive service in Korea and Vietnam. We loved her. She was faster than the other purposed built LPHs (Iwo Jima Class) which were slower than my dead grandmother and had tremendous short comings. She could get to hot spots real quick. Why the Navy chose not to keep her and her unconverted sisters is beyond me. We wouldn't have had to spend the money on the 7 purpose built LPHs that had only half the capability. Or maybe just for grins and for old time sake dust off the old Essex Class plans and build that hull in more modern configuration lengthen and widen the Hull. A new Essex Class could be built in 2 to 3 years as well. Romantic Food for thought. 😁 ;-) Love your program and appreciate that you keep up with the latest scoop and history on Naval Aviation. Semper Fi.
