Circle of life :). The (older) mother that dies was a stranger down the hall at the hospital. The new (younger) mother cries with joy as her new baby is born. Great PA band, great poetic song

3 years ago my grandmother had a routine surgery, while in recovery she developed a blood clot and would be placed in ICU. A couple days later my sister in law’s water broke. I spent the first half of my day in a hospital in another city about 2 hours away waiting to say good bye to my grandmother with my family. Then drove back home to another hospital. The moment I arrived my niece was born. That’s what this song is about. This song definitely hits harder than it did when I first heard it as a teenager.

It's a bit of a stretch contextually but my 88yo gma got T-boned and required multiple surgeries to survive, she even signed a DNR because she said she was ready to meet God. My mom talked her out of that by reminding her 'if He wanted to meet you, He would've killed you in that crash. You're still here, you're not done.' A couple weeks later, my father-in-law lost his 3 year battle to cancer at age 58. Circle of life for sure, we can't control it or make sense of it. We can just make peace and live good lives while we're here

Live is an amazing band from York PA. The story behind the song -Lyrically, “Lightning Crashes” is a meditation on the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. Kowalczyk’s (lead singer) vision of the song was a hospital emergency room where people died and babies were born, a never-ending transference of life energy: “Lightning crashes an old mother dies/Her intentions fall to the floor/The angel closes her eyes/The confusion that was hers/Belongs now to the baby down the hall.” Just a few years before, Kowalczyk discovered the writings of Indian spiritualist Jiddu Krishnamurti, whose philosophy of living life from a place of selflessness and humility influenced the singer’s songwriting process, as well as the band’s creative philosophy. “Lightning Crashes” was recorded and produced with Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison as part of the sessions for Live’s sophomore effort, Throwing Copper, at the famed Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota, during the summer of 1993. Around this time, Barbara Lewis, a longtime friend of the band, was killed by a drunk driver while fleeing from the police after a robbery in York. The band dedicated the song to Lewis, who was only 19 when she died. The band debuted “Lightning Crashes” at Woodstock ’94 and released the official single a month later, on September 24, 1994.

The band dedicated this song to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time it was written. Her brother in-law Cory told Songfacts the story: "The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed [lead singer Ed Kowalczyk] and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! 'Lightning Crashes' literally lives on."

Dang right! Live "Throwing Copper" is a great album. I co-owned a CD/Cassette/Vinyl store from 92-98. Very few records were released on Vinyl in that era... Just the best bands: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden - these had midnight vinyl release parties - the Vinyl LPs were typically released a week before the CD & Cassette release date. And Live "Throwing Copper" was released on Vinyl, too: it was in that elite class. It was one of my favorite LPs (contemporary or retro) to put on the turntable and play in the store. I could never understand why this album (CD/Cassette/LP) it didn't sell better than it did. Absolute classic. One of the best of the 90's for sure.

"Lightning Crashes" is Live's biggest hit and signature song. It was never released as a single, so it never appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, but it did peak at #13 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, and at #7 on the Radio & Records CHR Airplay chart, both in the spring of 1995. The song was featured on their 1994 album, Throwing Copper. The album is a masterpiece, and one of the iconic albums of the 1990s. It's been certified 8X Platinum by the RIAA, having sold more than 8,000,000 copies in the U.S.

Wow that's interesting, I never realized it was not released as a single. I feel like Alternative radio stations did that a lot back then, they'd play album cuts that got super-popular with the listeners and went on to get heavy airplay, but were not official singles. Good times!

From what I always took from this song is that it's simply about the circle of life: a new baby is born, while at the same time a woman dies, and at the same time the new mother is so happy about her new child (who will soon take the roll of being the old mother dying, and the new baby will be the parent who has the new child). Their lyrics are all so poetically written and their music is great...you should definitely check out more from Live.

My son passed away in 1999. He was 18 years old! This was his favorite song ever! I understand that now. Beautiful song.

Live brought me to you!! It’s about the circle ⭕️ of life . As fast as lightning crashes a new life is created/born and another is taken. If you take another listen knowing that it will make a lot more sense. Loved you groovin to it girl I was doing the same thing. Lol Ed’s voice is amazing they have so many great songs . A lot of the time though you’ll say to ppl “I love The Dolphins Cry or I Alone” and ppl will be like who sings that I don’t think I’ve heard it. Then as soon as you show it to them they’re like I LOVE THIS SONG! lol So they have a lot of hits it’s just that ppl don’t know the band’s name.

It's true. Some songs are so good you feel envious of someone is hearing for the 1st time. Try Iris & Overcome.

They were playing in deadwood, sd one time. A summer thunderstorm started rolling over during their set. Instead of taking a break... they played this as thunder rumbled above. It was amazing i was a kid but still loved and felt it.

Awesome as always guys. Pretty much this whole album is fire. "The dam at otter creek" is a slow burn but maybe my favourite from it.

I got this Album on Okinawa, somewhere between 1993-1995, being stationed on Camp Hansen then, new music didn’t come in that often.. I’ve just recently started listening again, with all these emotions coming through, remembering the good days, being in the US Marines.. Semper Fi

Not an acoustic intro, but I know what you mean. It's an electric guitar with no effects pedals, AKA "clean guitar". So if you ever hear "clean" in reference to guitar, that's what it means. Just a musical tidbit for future reference from one of your musician followers. :p Glad you liked this one! It's a heavy one, in more ways than one. To sum up the meaning: “Lightning Crashes” is a meditation on the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk came up with it on the fly sitting on his brothers bed with an acoustic. (written on acoustic, played electric btw lol). To quote him on it, “To this day I have no idea where that song came from - and I love that.” "Beautiful" sums it up pretty well I think. :)

I graduated high school in 1995 and this album came out that year. It was huge. My friends and I went to see them in concert and to this day it was one of the best shows we had ever gone to. Ed Kowalchek, I know I butchered his name, has a set of lungs. This whole album Throwing Copper,is fantastic.
