Here's a story no one will read or care about, but I'll put it out there anyway. I was serving in the Army in 1994 when this song came out. I was 20 years old and lived in a barracks, which was basically like a really basic apartment situation. Because we all didn't have a lot of space and worked and lived so closely together, we shared a lot, including music. My roommate and close friend was really into Live, and I remember how much he loved this album. In early 1995 I got sent to a school across the country for a couple months. When I came back, he and some others had been sent on a deployment. It was meant to be an easy humanitarian mission, bringing food and supplies to people, but things happened and he never came back. His valuables and personal effects were sent to his family, but his music collection had been left in the barracks common area for the rest of us. My buddies thought I should keep it. I know the subject matter of the song doesn't match my story, but I still think of him every time I hear a Live tune. All of 1995 just came back to me in ten minutes...

The song is not only the whole "circle of life" thing with a baby being born in one room while an old woman dies in another. It's also about a friend of theirs who was killed by a drunk driver and donated several of her organs, including her heart, which gave new life to others. But it's a very powerful song, especially the way it progressively builds. Great reaction - I love it when music makes people cry (in a good way).

The young mother giving birth to the baby doesn’t die (she cries)… the “old mother dies” is referring to a older lady (also a mother) down the hall in the same hospital who has lived a full life and is now dying. It is a song about the circle of life - the part “The angel closes her eyes, The confusion that was hers Belongs now to the baby down the hall” speaks to that moment

It's a common misconception about this song (in fact, this video precipitated a 'discussion' between my wife and I), but this song is not about losing the mother in childbirth. The song is about the circle of life. In one room, a child is born to the "new mother". "Down the hall", the "old mother" dies. One life ends, and another begins. The lead singer made this pretty clear in interviews.

From WIki- "I envisioned it taking place in a hospital, where all these simultaneous deaths and births are going on, one family mourning the loss of a woman while a screaming baby emerges from a young mother in another room. Nobody's dying in the act of childbirth, as some viewers think. What you're seeing is actually a happy ending based on a kind of transference of life." This is from the singer who also wrote the song.

This song came out when I was 14. I knew nothing about death because all of the family members who were living when I was born were still alive--so it didn't have the same impact. As life moves on and you mature, though, you inevitably reach a point where those people you've known and loved all your life start dropping off one-by-one. You begin to understand your own mortality and the temporary nature of your existence more and more. I haven't heard this song in years, and hearing it just now was overwhelming, because I'm now familiar with both sides of the equation. It hurts, but in a way that's comforting; it's reminder that things keep going when our time here is over. I'm not religious, but I like to think there's a purpose to our time here, and I keep the hope that there's a bright place somewhere where we all meet again.

The song is about the circle of life. At the same moment life is being born in one room, death is happening in the room down the hall. And the confusion of life is transferred from one to another. The mother that gives birth does not die, it's the old mother down the hall that dies at the exact moment the baby is born. Got it! Now go down the Live rabbit hole, the whole album of Throwing Copper is one masterpiece after another!

It's my favorite band of all time. Pronounced Līve. I've seen them over 50 times in concert, met them and met many wonderful friends because of them. Unfortunately, the band has 1 original member now... the lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk. He tours as Līve with 3 new band members. I'll be seeing them again on June 1st. 🎶 Thank you for this video!

Kowalczyk's vision of the song was a hospital emergency room where people died and babies were born, a never-ending transference of life energy. Seven Mary Three Song: Cumbersome. That is all. Ah, Live, opened for them at Rams Head Live in '06. Good times. We went on before The Speaks who were the second headliner.

Also dig 10,000 Years (Peace is Now)! This might be an unpopular opinion, but I believe Mental Jewelry is superior to Throwing Copper. TC is brilliant, don't get me wrong. And it's pretty clear, they learned a lot, gained a lot of experience, before they made TC. But MJ is their finest work.

@screwyootube1 There was a lengthy and detailed article in Rolling Stone magazine in February about the demise of Live. Comes down to guitarist Chad Taylor getting himself and Gracey and Dahlheimer into some shady business dealings where they lost a lot of money and got into tremendous debt. Those 3 aren't talking to each other and sold majority share of the band to Ed.

If you'll notice, the structure of the song mimics childbirth. It starts off soft, gradually builds and strengthens, becomes very hard and fast, plateaus, and then just stops. This song and "This Woman's Work" are both fabulous songs that are (at least partially) about childbirth. "I can feel it coming back again, like a roll of thunder chasing the wind. Forces pulling from the center of the earth again. I can feel it." You should DEFINITELY listen to their "I Alone" next! Total banger!
@johnplaysgames3120

I know others here have already mentioned that the "new mother" doesn't die in childbirth, it's the "old mother" -- an older lady, presumably unrelated -- who dies in another hospital room down the hall at the same moment the baby is being born to the "new mother" and that the song is more about reincarnation or the continuance of life. I'll just add that the singer of the band, Ed Kowalczyk, has a spiritual side that you can hear coming through in many of his lyrics and which adds a depth to Live's songs that I've always appreciated. A couple other Live songs that I think you two will really like are "I Alone" (which, iirc, was their first big hit) and "Dolphins Cry" (which was also huge at the time). Both are more rockin' than this relatively ballad-y song while still retaining that extra depth. I predict you will very much like both.

This takes me back to my high school years, where I would listen to this song and the record every single morning as I got ready for school. Absolutely LOVE the band! It is Live, as in I'm A-Live. There is a crucial part you missed though, it wasn't the new mother who passed, it was the Old Mother...it's about the cycle of life and death, and every time a new baby is born some other family looses their mother. The cycle of birth and death goes on though.

I am so thrilled you're delving into the world of 90's Alternative Rock! There's so many bands and singers to introduce you to. In my humble opinion, the music videos of the mid 90's were some of the most iconic ever made. In no particular order, some to definitely consider are: Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun Fiona Apple - Criminal No Doubt - Spiderwebs Green Day - Basket Case Hole - Celebrity Skin Red Hot Chili Peppers - Aeroplane Bjork - Oh So Quiet Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
