It is 2021 and this advice is still perfect. Janie's Sweets spoke of you in one of her videos and I zipped right over here. Again, perfect advice for novices and reminder for those that even have been doing this awhile. I stopped making cakes about five years ago because of the stress and everything that you just mentioned is true. Trying to do too many different things to please everyone. Restarting and I definitely have learned the lesson of stay in my cake lane! Thanks!

Thanks! This is the advice I needed to hear! I asked you this question on tonight's Periscope (8/6) when your husband interrupted. I'm officially going full time cakes next year. For now it's small order here and there. I know I SUCK at buttercream. But I love fondant. Would u mind looking at my Instagram photos and critique? #cakesofgracehawaii

I just started doing cupcakes. And people ask me do I do cakes as well, and I just dont and they look at me funny and ask why. I'm just starting with cupcakes... I dont know much about icing a cake let lone decorating one. I;m not sure when I will venture off and do cakes. And I DO have two children and a full time job. Soooo yeah. Need some advice. I'm gifting cupcakes and just practicing. Any words would be nice.

+Whitney Miller Hi.. sorry it has taken me 3 weeks to see this. Before you start "selling" cupcakes, make sure you can do so under the Cottage Food Law. Then get some general liability insurance, a DBA and become "legal" and JUST do cupcakes for now until you are ready to do other things. Nothing wrong with saying no AND nothing wrong with just staying a hobbyist using your talents to give gifts.

So since you do all different kinds of cakes, you don't have a lane? I keep learning new techniques to be able to offer my customers more than just a buttercream cake. I'm quite confused by your stance on this issue.
@Kbustos3298 жыл бұрын
My lane is whatever I am most comfortable with offering my customers. If you have learned new techniques and now are able to offer your customers more options, then you are broadening your cake lane. I don't think what I am saying is confusing. If you can drive in more than one lane, then do that. Happy caking
