Hey Tom, great video. Regarding the 4K question, whilst I think they SHOULD have made it 4K for future proofing in reality 1080p is more than enough for most applications. I am an AV expert in my day job, and honestly 4K just isn’t necessary unless you are using this on a very large format display for a concert type applications, in which case you’d be using broadcast kit costing so much more. This is a great product. I love my ATEM, but the audio is not good enough. This new product ticks a lot of boxes.

Yeah, it's pretty great overall! The more I've learned about 4K and the complexity of adding it to a device like this, the more I realize it could increase the price like 4-5x if they kept all the features. So I think they made the right move and it's going to end up being a really popular choice.

i really like that Rode uses vesa mounts and 1/4 20's. Elgato needs to learn a thing or two. well many companies need to.

I use the atem mini pro; with a maono AME2 and sm7b. If u are on a light budget, it’s great

I feel like this was made for people like me who needs a smooth workflow for podcast production. Being able to connect an RCP2 via USB to add more mics is sooo dope!! Also, I’ve seen a lot of people mention 4K, but honestly, none of my clients have ever asked for 4K video😅they just want good audio and video. Plus, editing multiple 4K angles is tough on most computers. And I had no idea it had a Vesa mount!!! That’s going to be fun to play with. Great stream, I’m looking forward to the next one.

1080 is perfect for streaming I just wish it had a 4k recording option. Would be perfect for recording my KZbin video thus negating the need for editing 👌

Tom I would consider buying this just because of the audio part but that YOLO box ultra is hard to pass up. If the Yolo box had Neutrik it would be a game changer. I think you just have to buy both.

Yolo does a great job with some really innovative features! I know you're supposed to be able to connect a Rodecaster directly via USB, but I've always struggled with it. Otherwise it's a VERY impressive platform!

Hello Tom, as I wrote for quite a while ago I did mentioned that me operating from my home in Braunschweig/Germany a Webradio using a D&R Airlite mixing console and if I wanted to add „live video-feed“ additionally to my Webradio-Stream which device I should get? Would be the Rodecaster Video too big for this purpose? You always do a stunning brilliant work with your Videos!

Thanks for the kind words! I think the setup question depends. IF things are working well overall right now, you probably don't need/want to change anything. If you just need on camera source, then a basic capture card can get the job done. But, if you want multiple sources PLUS good audio PLUS things like scenes/graphics/auto-switching, then the RCV could be a perfect solution.

Tom thank you for always doing the heavy lifting. I use the elgato teleprompter with facecam pro. Can I use the teleprompter and facecam pro as a rodecaster video input ?

The Prompter isn't compatible, but I'm not sure about the Facecam. I know the OBSBot webcams work very well, so if the specs are similar then it SHOULD? But I don't have one to test it for myself 😬

Not sure if something you could answer but could I route my Pioneer S11 DJM mixer to stream/record my DJ sets with multi cam recording on my FX30 and ZV10. I usually use camlink 4k and switch via streamdeck on my Mac Studio into OBS and run Serato my dj software on my 14” M2 MBP. Love it 😅 I THINK what you're asking for is something that makes sense since the RCV would handle all of the processing and then let you switch everything too. But honestly, depending on how complex you're getting, if you just need camera switching, the ATEM Mini Pro might be a more affordable way to go. If you need good audio though, then the RCV beats everything.

@@tombuck haha thanks! I have an atem mini - my Elgato capture card just broke so I was either going to get a streamer x or this for multi cam. Thanks for the reply legend! But yes as a DJ - audio is optimum. I run it thru a universal audio Solo in the Mac Studio … it’s just a lot of cords and management between two computers and cable management lol.I’ll let you know how I go! Cheers!

Hi Tom! Thanks for your insightful video on the Rodecaster Video. I recently purchased the Duo but am now considering a multi-cam podcast setup. Does owning both the Duo and the Video make sense, or is the Video sufficient? Are there any unique audio capabilities in the Duo that the Video doesn't offer? My current setup/plans: - Using the Duo for video podcasts with an XLR mic and audio effects - Solo recording, but aiming to do on-site guest interviews - Already own a Stream Deck and Elgato 4K X for 4K video capture Should I return the Duo and just go for the Video? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

At around the 27 minute mark I connected the Rodecaster Pro II to the Video, so see if that seems like a helpful option for the Duo (it'd give you a total of 4 XLR inputs). I think that your current setup sounds awesome (my wife has the 4K X and it's fantastic), so if it's suiting your needs, then there's really no need to change anything! For multicam, the RCV could potentially make things easier, especially with auto switching and the built in super nice audio. I know that's not a clear answer, but there's really no wrong choice, so it just comes down to what you think fits your needs and budget the best!

The device looks very tall. Is the specified 614 millimeters the actual full height? Or do the buttons extend beyond that measurement?

I would have much preferred to have a hybrid type of device. 2-3 Video Inputs and 6-Channels of audio all able to record to an external hardrive.

Not going to lie, I got the RodeCaster Video for our student run Podcast here at our high school to start incorporating video, but this thing is overwhelming to learn. Everything I have tried to do to set it up has required hours of research. What I thought would be plug and play, has become cumbersome and overwhelming. Trying to use it with our Rodecaster Pro, but getting no where. :) Do you have a good video for out of the box, to setting up, to producing your first video?

H Tom, thanks for this entertaining and informative video! Did you ever check out Magewell's Director Mini? As a former user of an ATEM Mini Pro ISO and YoloBox Pro I find it to be an amazing little device and it fit's my need perfectly (e.g. being able to connect an external touchscreen to have a bigger user interface and the great remote capabilities (web, mobile, stream deck via bitfocus companion), especially after the last firmware upgrade to v3.0 which added even more features. Just wanted to let you know... I'm kind of surprised you did not make a video about the Director Mini yet. :) Thanks again and all the best from Hamburg, DE!

@@tombuck It sure is (for me). I always found the ATEM too clunky (and somewhat limited) and I never really warmed up to the YoloBox interface. Director Mini has very much to offer, especially for it's size. Sounds like I am a Magewell sales person, but I promise Ia am not, just a happy customer. I really think about getting a Rodecaster Video for stationary use though (together with the Rodecaster Duo I own) and just use the Director Mini for on-the-go.

Hey Tom I’ve just been through a load of videos and can’t see anybody talking about using apps on the computer as an input source Do you know if I can isolate say ‘keynote’ as an input source?

You can run a computer's HDMI output into the RCV, but you can't isolate a specific app. You can mirror or extend your existing desktop, which might make it easier to "assign" keynote to the RCV.

Yes, you can connect the Rodecaster Pro's USB 2 to the Video's USB input.

Hi Tom. I enjoyed the live stream. It was very informative. Someone else asked my question before I did but you didn’t have an answer. Q: Can an iPhone be used as a camera on the RODECaster Video? Perhaps it’s possible to use a Lightning to HDMI cable. Have you tried that possibility yet? Thanks.

This is a great question! I just did a bit of experimenting, and similarly to the ATEM, I was able to get a clean HDMI signal from my iPhone 14 Pro using a Lightning to HDMI adapter and the Blackmagic Camera app. 👍

The HDMI outputs are 8bit as far I can tell by B&H. It might sound like a silly question but it is the one crucial deciding factor for me to stay with my Atem Mini Extreme + Atomos Ninja V+ combo… The Atem Mini Extreme’s HDMI outputs are 10bit. Do you think the difference in quality when recording with the Atomos Ninja V+ would be significantly reduced? Thank you!!

I'm probably looking at the same specs you are, but it does look like the HDMI outputs are 8 bit. I haven't used the Atomos much myself, so I honestly can't say how much it's a factor, bit it's definitely a good question and a smart point to consider!

When you plug a shotgun mic into a Sony ZV-E10 and set the internal recording to level 1 should the camera automatically pick up the new mic? I’m using a TRS-TRS cable Thank you

The camera SHOULD recognize it when any external audio source is connected. I don't think the gain level really impacts it, but it could be worth experimenting.

ATEM puts out MJPEG compressed video over UVC but RCV expects and sends raw UVC video - much better quality.

with my rode streamer x i always get a hdcp errors when i try to connect an ipad or a mac as a source, but here it seems to work fine.

The Rodecaster Video must somehow work differently from Streamer X in that regard. The HDCP thing with Apple stuff is super annoying for sure.

Not for me- I talk about it towards the middle of the stream, but basically if it were full 4K with all these features, it'd likely cost 5x the price.

I don't think there's a way to connect Streamer X (but I should try just for fun!). Either way, it wouldn't be in 4K. The Stremaer X signal would be like my Sony cameras- even though they're set to 4K the RCV only handles 1080.

I would bet that most people that watch this video aren't even watching in 1080, or they wouldn't even realize that the video quality is 720 if they have their settings to automatically adjust based on the internet speed

I think this looks great, especially live! It's not color-graded 4K but it's VERY good 1080. Sometimes KZbin sets livestreams to lower quality settings by default, so your player settings might be set lower.
