Appreciate the fair and balanced review. Footage looks noticeably softer/choppier than what you can achieve with ATEM or simply recording in-camera. For anyone with an existing ATEM, there is no reason real reason to upgrade unless you absolutely want XLR's integrated into your switcher. For what it is (1080), it's too expensive in 2024 and most people who need a switcher would still be better served by an ATEM mini ISO.

Without forgetting that this doesn’t even produce a XML that can be imported to a Video Editing software. Not even metion that you can expand this to the Blackmagic Cameras and sync everything like nothing.
@HasanNiz2 ай бұрын
Absolutely brilliant that you managed to make this entire video without any fancy B roll and editing and still managed to make it interesting enough to watch the entire 30+ mins with excitement! As for the Rodecaster Video I have some mixed feelings mainly revolving around the price as it doesn’t match the expectations, for the exact same price it would make sense for it to also have the Rodecaster Duo glued to it, with large display and 4 faders along with smart pads, or have 4k, or have 8 HDMI in, or just have a much lower price for what it offers. I think the current best setup for someone like me would be a Rodecaster DUO along with an ATEM Mini Pro ISO, total price would be the same but lots of features that the Rodecaster Video provides can be added via software like OBS or Ecamm. I couldn’t justify buying the RODE Streamer X last year when they first announced it but since then it has drastically reduced in price, and they haven’t updated it much but it’s 100% worth the current price, I’m hoping that the Rodecaster Video drops in price as well to the level that it’s actually worth with all its limitations.
@myshowpodcast2 ай бұрын
I just bought my DUO a few months ago and now I'm seeing this RCV and basically just launching into the world of Video and capture cards...it's a whole different language from photography and graphic design (my mainstream.) I look at this and wonder, do I purchase or do like you said...add an ATEM MP ISO and call it a day, seeing that I've been also learning how to use OBS (which by the way is such a cool program.) Does this "production suite" being released by RODE eliminate the hassle of Mixing board, switcher and software or will it be about the same work involved as the aforementioned?

This is a fantastic review of the rode caster video!!! Thank you very much! I purchased one last week and it arrived a few days ago. I have been using an atem mini pro iso but have been very unsatisfied with the audio quality which has forced me to run my audio out of my rodecaster pro II (amazing unit) and matching the audio with the iso feeds in Final Cut Pro. I plugged my rodecaster pro into the rode caster video and made a test recording and HOLY S$%T...amazing!!!!! Sound was perfect and perfectly matched with all 4 video feeds. The time saved in Final Cut Pro was a tremendous relief to me. I am a fan from day one and super happy with the purchase! Your review is awesome, as usual! I've been using the ATEM Mini Extreme for over two years in a live TV news production setup, and I have to say, it's incredibly powerful, especially when paired with Blackmagic Studio Cameras. The small buttons on the ATEM give you full control over the cameras through the tally system, which is a game-changer for live productions. Additionally, I use the Rodecaster Pro as my audio mixer and connect it to the ATEM Mini Extreme. However, I completely agree with your point about the poor audio amplification on the ATEM. It's something that could definitely be improved. Also i am using Streamdeck with atem extreme .. that give me a lot of extra options with atem macros Thank you for the in-depth review!

Crappy Audio has been a complaint back to BMD since the day the first Atem Mini was used out in the real world. A device that has 4 or 8 Balanced audio inputs, with decent mixing and equalization features, that can embed the mix in to a HDMI stream looping thru from Camera to an Atem Mini style switcher, would sell like crazy. All current Atem Mini owners would grab it, as would a lot of OBS and vMix users.

@PiDsPagePrototypes2 ай бұрын
Thing is, even in 2024, when you read the live comments from viewers, 4K is less important then smooth vision, and good sound is even more important. Sure, 4K is real nice for local big screens and the like, but with the majority of views for streams being on mobile devices, 1080p30 is more then adequate, especially if it's drop-out free.

@Goodmanperson552 ай бұрын
tbf, the Atem is only really focused on video capture and has no internal recording capabilitiesat all. If you add the price of one of rode's interfaces to the Atem, since that's part of the selling point of the rodecaster video (built-in rode interface), do you think it could be a fair price?
@HomeRecordingMadeEasy2 ай бұрын
@@Goodmanperson55 The ATEM does have internal audio recording, I use it all the time. It has 2 mic inputs just like this Rode unit. Now, the preamps may not be as good thats true but I used them all the time and the audio I record is totally fine. Seeing as Rode put out a product called "Rodecaster Video" it should be way more focused on the video side in year 2024. to not have 4k capability, to not have the ISO recording and only have 4 HDMI inputs? $1200 is a very high price for that. Even the little ridiclous screen is laughable. The ATEM Mini Pro ISO is only $500 and that prodiuct is at least 5-6 years old. For the price point being nearly the same cost as an Atem ISO Extreme as someone that has being using Atems for years now, I think it comes down to do you need it for personal or small production use or for a large production event use. It’s a great all in one solution for a 2 to 3 person podcast or streamer setup since the audio processing is built in. But if you’re willing to tinker you can get everything the rode has and much more. So the question becomes what’s more important to you? Ease of use or functionality. For context I run a full production company off the atem extreme iso. I do everything from podcasts to live multicam events for churches and galas.
@j.c.norman2 ай бұрын

The thing the ATEM series still stands out with is their ability to build pre-switched timeline assemblies. That's something which can save a LOT of billable compared to rebuilding and switching timelines from source footage and audio files. The 'advanced graphics' can certainly be done using an ATEM, but are made in resolve (where you also have more control), then fed to your streaming suite as scenes/transitions/stingers etc. you can trigger. The audio capabilities of the Mini series /does/ need work (though the broadcast series of ATEM switchers run proper 3pin XLR in) so while I don't see us moving system any time soon (unless blackmagic open up the timeline building to third parties), this is a good push for BMD to rethink their context in the non-broadcast market and maybe up their feature set on the minis :)
@tombuckАй бұрын
Yeah, the prebuilt timeline thing is such a great feature! I'm sure the RCV will be able to export .xml files at some point which would be nice, but especially for Resolve users it still might not be as fully featured.

Thank you! The 4K thing is tricky (and I say this as someone who does want it). Pricing out 4K switchers, they don't really even start anywhere under $3K, and that's just for a basic switcher (no high end audio, scenes, graphics, etc). What I'm learning is that it's not a linear curve of complexity when adding 4K (I assumed it's just...4 times as much as 1080 🤷🏻♂️ ), but it's an exponential curve that gets very intense very quickly. Who knows where things will go in the future though, either with updates or with different models. One very cool thing about this is that Rode developed all of the architecture "in house" and now that they have a platform built, I'm thinking it could be simpler to scale up or down with other products.

@tombuck tom, I'm unsure how large the market is for 4k switchers and for the more capable rodemater video . For connecting a camera to the an USB input, I think it would be worth trying out connecting through a UVC HDMI capture card. Since the datasheet is not clear (it only stated that the codec is H264), I was curious what the bitrate of the recordings is or if you can set those. It is a bit shame that it only can do 264, but I suspect encoding many 265 or AV1 streams is still too difficult/expensive, and it does not matter much if the bitrate is high enough. However KZbin has AV1 and h265 streaming and Twitch has it in beta now for some time, so it would have been nice if it could at least encode one AV1 or H265 for direct streaming purposes. In my eyes that is possible a bigger downfall than not having 4k, certainly if you want to use it on events, where you don´t always have the best internet speeds. And beside that upload bitrate to Twitch is quite limited, and a better codec would improve the quality in those situations a lot.
@tombuck2 ай бұрын
I don't know these answers, but I'm also curious to know the bitrates!
@Anco2 ай бұрын
@@tombuck You have the files, I guess you could see if it is somewhere in the file properties, or otherwise you could look at how long a video file is, and how big the size is. I found it strange that it is not mentioned anywhere, but I think that maybe Rode does not have committed yet to which bitrate(s) they will use. Since it would be quite easy to change the bitrates in an update, it does not take really more compute, the only thing is that you need an device which can write all the data fast enough to store it So I have no doubt if the bitrates would be too low now, they will increase it.

Great video man1 I really appreciate it! what would you recommend if you were going to need 5 sony cameras switcher for a Podcast? I havent been able to see if this one would give me that possibility or do I need to go for the Atem mini extreme iso that includes 8 hdmi inputs.
@tombuck11 сағат бұрын
Yeah, if you're going to regularly use more than 4 HDMI sources, then the ATEM Extreme is probably the way to go. I'd recommend the ISO model so you can record tracks individually and even have it generate .xml files to make editing easier.

@ thank you so much Tom! Love your content man. I did not expect you answer that quick! I value that! 2 questions that I haven found on KZbin are: despite if I set the cameras to 4k format… the ending video using then Atem is going to be 1080, correct? And is there any device/attachment//cage that you recommend to place in on the hdmi outlets of the Sony cameras, I heard that they need to be taken care of because if the cable is heavy it might damage that outlet and there’s no way to fix it.

I do a lot of live presentations that involve app demos + slides. Today I use OBS+StreamDeck, but I'd much prefer a hardware solution. I'm trying to wrap my brain around how I would export part of my desktop (or just part of my desktop) > Codecaster Video as an input source in addition to my slides & camera. Camera(s) are obvious with te RCV, but... the screencast portion... Not sure if this is possible, but thoughts on how you'd send just a portion of your desktop > RCV? Maybe a second HDMI output that mirrors your desktop, then create a scene on the RCV that crops to just that part of the desktop that contains the demo?

If you're looking specifically for online presenting workflows with the RCV, there's no better resource than Cat Mulvihill! kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2rPkKWDe9lplZosi=7IoIcn403XN3PNA6 She has several videos that focus specifically on this topic.

@@tombuck 100% she's a friend, but helped me out recently & knew she was tied up this week so I didn't want to nag her just yet... but I'll definitely reach out to her. Thanks! FWIW... I ordered a RCV today to try it out. I've got a 49" wide screen so my plan is to setup two set 1920x1080 areas (one for slides, one for the screencast demo) and have a 2nd HDMI cable from the computer > input on RCV. Based on both your & @cat's videos, I should be able to take that input and create scenes that crop the HDMI input feed so I can have a "slides" and "demos" scene reusing the same input. In theory, it should work, so I just need to test it... but love it as an option! Thanks... and great series covering the RCV. Cards on the table: this is how i was introduced to you (somehow I was living under a rock and wasn't aware of your channel before the Rode event... but following Cat in going to that event, I got a new channel I sub'd to!) 🙌

For those of us who already have a Rodecaster Pro 1 or 2, it would be nice if this was just a video device with one 1/4" stereo input for audio from the RCP, like the ATEM does. One device for audio. One device for video. Plus it could be much less expensive for video only.

Big question: With the audio input - can this eliminate the RC Pro if I am doing a solo recording? My take: as an eCamm user and former ATEM ISO pro user I left that because I have a 1080/4K workflow and the ATEM was overly complex. RODE definitely understands non-power user design. When it can do 4K and ISO tracks at $1200 I am there. Probably next version in two years.
@tombuck2 ай бұрын
Yes, it can definitely replace a Rodecaster for solo recordings. As for 4K, the more I learn about it and see what other offerings there are, currently this would come in at a $6K-$8K price point if it kept all the features. Time always makes tech less expensive, but it's still likely that a "full" 4K version even in several years would cost several thousand dollars.

Thank you for this. Curious about your thoughts on this.... I am wanting a good portable video podcast studio option. I was going to use 2 of the Podmics and 2 of the USB Podmics. Will that work well, do you think? It seems to me the best options due to the convenience of having 1 device for video and audio. I will already have an entire suitcase full of lighting, stands, microphones, cables, etc.... It would be nice to not have 2 separate devices for audio and video switching. Thoughts?

Enjoy your process. The camera switching is soo fast! I would love an OBS plugin to apply the animated themes and other alerts into this. I have an original Rodecaster, and it’s been so great but since I’m doing podcasts remotely, I don’t need 4 mics, so im going sell it in a gator travel case and procaster and pod mic and just keep my SM7B and NT1. The recording option is a dream for recording a stream session. With 3-4 cam link inputting for my space flight sim setup into SL OBS scene and then output the completed scene to my streaming pc via a HDX. It’s a complex setup I would love to simplify. However, I am not sure…probably won’t work… due to the live game capture and scene animated camera overlays, scenes, etc would be an issue. Local decide recording with those needs met would be amazing

Great walkthrough and the main no-no's for me are 1080 and the device not showing as "ISO - video" 4 HDMI sources in the computer. I'd pay 2-3K for all in one solution with 4K on all inputs, 4 audio ins and all the usual Røde processing. Still, I don't need it because I can achieve this with the current, albeit several devices connected - setup. The advantage of this all in one device would be portability and the client work where 1080 is totally OK. I'll keep my attention on more demo videos about the Rødecaster Video because I want to check how advanced picturein picture can be... All in all, you presented so well the main features and the comparizons with Atem, Yolo.. were great. I love that you used hand drawn flowcharts 🙂

Great video Tom! I definitely think this is an interesting avenue for RØDE to take, and agree with you in regards to 4K, however I do still understand why they stuck with 1080 for the most part. Great Video Tom!! Question: Not factoring costs. For a beginner who has no equipment would you buy Rodecaster Video instead of the Rodecaster Pro 2. We will have 1-3 people with microphones. Thank you!
@tombuckАй бұрын
3 Mics could potentially get tricky, but there are ways around it with USB and stuff, but 1-2 mics would be absolutely perfect. Although, that's mostly true if you plan to use the more advanced features of the RCV (scenes, auto switching, graphics, etc). In that case it's such a no brainer and will save so much time/frustration. But if you just need video switching, then something like an ATEM or the Ulanzi DD02 and a Rodecaster Duo/Pro could be a more affordable option.

Also this makes the people who have already bought the Rodecaster pro or pro 2 feel stupid by adding all its features into the Rodecaster video instead of making it a tool that intergrates with the Rodecaster pro 2, i think they missed that mark, it would be so sick to use both products together thus completing the product suite.

It works find with the Sony's via HDMI (that's what the whole video was filmed with), it just requires an uncompressed UVC webcam through USB, which not every camera has and I guess that includes the Sonys. You can also check out this livestream form today where I connect the RCP 2 to the Video for added functionality, so they complement each other very well: kzbin.infoYEwfCpyq6nk?si=g362JFe2uOqn1SDv&t=1597

I don't know if Rode is making their own FPGA/processing. The processing cost for 4k is still fairly heavy. Some valid ideas on your thoughts on 4k. But in the events space 4k is not in the used at this time. There are times when it is used. But that is past the scope that this device would get used for. Keep in mind from a processing perspective. 4k is 4x 1080.

Hey Tom, can you help me understand the "auto switch" workflow a bit better when using XLR mics being fed into the RCP2? Are the mics being hardwired to the camera, or does the RC video virtually associate? Am I still able to control audio through the RCP2, or has the RC video essentially eliminated the need?
@tombuck2 ай бұрын
Through the Rodecaster, the RCV can only see the USB channel it's connected to as a whole, so it's not ideal for auto switching (it can't break down the RCP into all of its separate inputs). For setup though, everything is assigned virtually. So through Rode Central you can assign the Rodecaster Pro to a certain camera, and all of the different RCV inputs to separate cameras too.

The RCV is incredibly reliable and has some incredibly powerful scene building and source management. The audio integration is also second to none, which is a very big deal for me!
