Not as much power, but I bet it does better at medium range, and does some impressive/weird things at low velocity due to that crazy spin. Or a frag round at mod-high velocity that grenades REALLY impressively due to that centrifugal force.

I think the best example of rotational energy is a flywheel. The larger the diameter or weight, the harder it is to slow it down. The faster you spin it, the more energy it stores. Same concept with the bullet. It certainly is harder to compare rotational energy between different bullets. A wadcutter is probably the easiest since it's basically a constant diameter. Different ogives of course change the sectional density making it extremely difficult/impossible to calculate off the cuff.

Good point on the 375 raptor... everyone says if you're doing subs+supers you need adjustable gas. It's a sexy cartridge, but it's also going to be a bit warm in a full-size honey badger. Kicks like a 50 beowulf+p.

This is a badass cartridge. I think picking up all the energy in rotation is a great way to enhance the subs. I also agree that 338 has amazing bullet options. This will be a big hit if there is enough companies who accept it and build aftermarket ammo, barrels etc...

The 375 uses 400 grain bullets by way of a specially made subsonic copper expander made by Maker just for the Raptor. Wicked looking bullet. Way less twist though, and it's a blunt inefficient bullet. Probably goes super deep though.

Maker is going to put out a 350 gr bullet just for 8.6 expanding subs. The weight advantage of 375 is getting encroached on, while the spin difference contributing to wounding might make up the rest. Food for thought.

8.6 @ 80 gr @ 3600 fps @ .650 b.c. is like 36" drop @ 600m. Big fat and light. Better drop then 147 gr 6.5 Creedmore by 65% Your 210gr 8.6blk cannot come close. 80 gr has bigger wound channel at all ranges out to 1500m. Barrel burner...not bad with German barrels. *custom bullets. 😁 Slow twist. Not everyone in SOCOM wants 210 grain rounds. Heavy as shit. May as well use .630 B.C. 196 Grain .308 Ruag Match Rounds. Awesome work BTW. Learning lots. TY.

Curious, and NO SHADE INTENDED: Is there an increase in chamber pressure when going with an ultra fast rate of twist? How about less velocity; all things being equal?
@MadMaxZ06
@MadMaxZ06 3 жыл бұрын
I ask, because as we all know, there are no free lunches in life. While kinetic energy on target by way of rotational forces, the increased expansion therein, the reduction in both noise and flash are all positives, is the ONLY downside that non-bonded projectiles are not recommended? FWIW, I am a happy owner of a Thunder Chicken.

Love that even with the levels of success that Q has seen in the last few years, you are still pushing boundaries and not being ok with the status quo. It’s a cutthroat/backstabbing industry in many ways for sure and I’ve regretted that I left the industry after 8 years. I do hope to return some day soon. You guys give me hope in the future of the industry. The small and mid size companies like Q are often the innovators because they are/can be more agile in everything (decision making, design, engineering, marketing, market trends, customer service, etc) and I love this podcast because you put all that right on the table and address those things. Looking forward to getting my hands on some Q products in the near future. Keep up the great work. Cliff Arnold Co-Founder and former Co-Owner of New Frontier Armory

@@nestorarcilaosorio2457 news to me. I'd love to see it. Discrete typically only does subs, and subs of a somewhat non-sleek design. So if they can get a decent BC, expansion and medium depth (140 wouldn't need to penetrate like a 200+ super). But retaining velocity would be great.

Very interested in bullets bigger than 300gr for subs. I can only find bullets that are 325gr but there for supers. Indeed, I just bought some 300 gr subsonic 338 expanders, and 165 gr tipped t-rex bullets from Maker, and more experimentally I got some 225 gr "lazer" tipped bullets from Cutting Edge Bullets (which are tough, but fragment all the way down to 1400 fps and have an insane 600+ g1 BC.) No luck finding dies yet, or primers, or barrel makers who are doing it.

On a 12.5" gas gun, what's the ideal gas block length? Pistol? Carbine? Mid length? Mid length is all the rage for AR308 pistols now, but this has a smaller/faster powder column, and subs might not have pressure that far out. But pistol might be over-gassed. So I'd guess carbine, but... Thoughts?
