@@KaptainKastle I know of what you speak! However, I am so grateful to say this last holiday season was actually a win for me, food-wise. I did all of Thanksgiving and (with a friend) Christmas cooking last Nov/Dec so it'd all be vegan (was all soy-free as well due to my brother's sensitivity to it, he was convinced he needed to make a meat dish for himself because y'know obvs vegans live off of soy) They weren't large gatherings due to covid, but I still cooked for days to make sure it'd be a proper feast and my brother would have tons of leftovers. I now feel like I can only do holidays this way though, because it's worth it if everything - including all the normal / traditional recipes - are vegan and delicious so that people can stop with the excuse of, "I could never be vegan because of this one dish I occasionally eat and therefore will continue to eat animal products three times a day". Still had to deal with some silly nonsense at the dinner table, eg my brother insisting the pumpkin pie tastes slightly different - it didn't, and his no-nonsense German wife was always quick to shut him down. But my goodness it was so nice for just everything to be vegan and delicious, I have no hope for humanity but at least my holiday meals will be fine in future. I am definitely gonna do myself a favor and get some soft cushiony mats, it was the only difficult thing about it all, all the standing! Otherwise I listened to funny podcasts, the latest Earthling Ed vids, and holiday music, so it all was relaxing and festive really.

@@KaptainKastle my family's pretty blockheaded but to their credit they are always incredibly grateful to anyone who cooks. My dad and brother have (when I was in high school) gobbled up some 'mistakes' I'd left out (meanwhile they left the good stuff untouched!) and were still full of praise - it was great - but, perhaps, it was not quite as good as usual?? (This happened twice, I was so mortified...) But still, to keep the peace, I planned ahead and (for both meals) had loads of table topics prepared, to keep the conversation light and flowing. And for afters, there were trivia quizzes (with minor prizes) and fun new board games. I've become aware there are so many amazing board games out there, and I wanna try the most popular ones! :) Hopefully next holiday season covid will be much less of a thing and maybe there can be some community vegan holiday stuff organized?? I expect to be in the US again this Nov / Dec, but tell ya what, for next year, if you're in the vicinity of Ireland (where we're supposed to settle down soon, my husband's an ahem brexit refugee ie can't stand the country anymore), you can come over and experience a real American Thanksgiving and/or Christmas dinner! With so much pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce you won't know what to do with it 😂

In order to be a meat based dieter it would have to be 76%+ meat/animal based =animal based dieter... 50/50% is omnivore 76%+ plants, is plant based dieter, typically a junk food dieter or 175-350kg of processed sugar a year dieter... it's hard to claim the standard american dieter is a meat eater when they consume upwards of 350kg of sugar a year( mostly from fizzy drinks and crisps.. ) the SADiet is Corn, wheat, soy and sugar...

@@-rr-4172 sorry but no. humanitarianism is also a moral value, it is no less relative than discussions of the morality of animal consumption. Humanitarianism is the belief in the value of human life, that's a value judgement, a moral statement. Also you misrepresent the question that is relevant, the discussion about veganism is not about whether you care more about your own well-being as opposed to that of animals. It's about whether you care more about your own taste pleasure than about the welfare and lives of animals.

Currently doing veganuary and considering making the leap permanent. I think your argument was put across brilliantly, but unfortunately where people have stereotyped vegans as pushing their views on others for so long, I think this was clouding their judgement. It was very evident that the arguments they had were not well thought through and perhaps they were flustered by the clear evidence that you had. Unfortunately, much like people I’ve spoken to in my life, people have so much bias and are quick to rationalise their diet and lifestyle. They don’t want to hear something that may challenge this, or open their eyes to the fact the morally and environmentally veganism is the only way forward.

True. Amusing how Jenny keeps talking about "environmentally friendly", "deforestation" and "small water footprint" as arguments FOR the consumption of animal products. Excuse me, WHAT? Animal products are the WORST for the environment, the number one reason for deforestation and use up insane amounts of water compared to vegan ones. And then she goes on to talk about "locally produced food" as if transportation had a big influence on the environmental friendliness of food. We long know that emissions from transportation make up the smallest percentage of the greenhouse gas emissions of food. The largest amount comes from producing that food, from land usage, from the animals themselves (cows producing methane) etc. The only thing I can hope for is that the younger generations aren't as ignorant, uninformed, selfish and stupid as these people.

The resentment about considering the ethical and environmental implications of eating meat is so deeply engrained. Each of these people presumed that Ed's aim was to ignore their points of view and that, if he were in charge of the country, he would enforce veganism on everyone. Instead he raised several well researched and thought out points about the ethics of the meat and dairy industry, animal suffering in general and the issues caused by our current farming systems for the environment. Veganism is regarded like some form of cult or religion predicated on speculative beliefs that are up for debate. Animal suffering exists and our farming system does damage the environment. The facts are out there and more people are waking up.

What you're saying is clearly false. Convincing (additional) 40% of people to eat meat only twice a week would result in less animal suffering and deaths than if we convinced (less than 5/7, ~28,5%) 25% of people to go vegan; the primary focus should be the betterment of the wellbeing of animals, and the latter would accomplish that less, so there's clearly a difference. I agree that the problem with those just reducing meat is that they still implicitly think that animals are here for us to be exploited (which can result in people coming back to eating meat daily), but theoretically some meat reduction initiatives for masses can be well argued for (for now, in 2022 in this dire situation; in the future full veganism is the way, of course).

The ‘head in the sand’ phenomenon of this TV panel is appealing. Thank you for your continuing forbearance of such ignorance and unreasoned arguments on the panel’s part. As a clinician scientist, Ed, I have made a critical point to add to your compelling arguments to support vegan nutrition. However, I appreciate you are unable to read each and every one of the thousands of comments. The fact is we are ‘vegan-by-design’. See ‘The Anatomy of Eating’ by Dr. Milton Mills who compared the three on 18 dimensions of anatomy and physiology. When carnivores, omnivores and herbivores (vegans) are compared, humans have NO resemblance to omnivores, although culturally we choose to consume animal sourced foods and turn a blind eye to how they arrive on our plate The more humans digress from a whole food, low fat plant-based diet, the sicker we become (The Blue Zones of the world are a testament to this). The epidemic on non-communicable diseases are the result which most people will die from. Carry on!, Ed. You are doing more for humanity than most of us so-called ‘health’ professionals, despite our multiple degrees. I am embarrassed to be part of this establishment as we are failing to translate the literature - contributing to. @@MM-mu5pz You write, "Eating animals is morally indefensible and everyone with a brain knows it." Of course, many non-human animals have a brain but don't know that it is morally indefensible to eat animals. You are right to imply, though, that human beings ought to be held to a higher moral standard than irrational animals. But that contradicts the vegan claim that there is no essential difference between human and non-human animals. You write that "humans ARE animals." Yes, they are rational animals. Non-human animals are irrational animals. Our rational nature is precisely what sets us apart from irrational beasts. Since we are capable of abstract intellection, which is not reducible to brain activity, we must be endowed with an immaterial soul. Thus, the value of human beings is incommensurable with the value of non-human animals.

@Danny By assessing distinctive behaviors, we may ascertain distinctive ontological beings: inanimate objects, plants, animals, persons. Nor do they have an inviolable right to life. In fact, they are ordered to human flourishing.

Food is even more necessary than owning a car, and animal agriculture worse for the environment than all forms of transportation combined. It may be their "choice", but we're all going to suffer from so many people making such selfish choices. And this includes ofc themselves suffering, not that they care.
