I have a personal trainer (a professional natural bodybuilder) who is very knowledgeable and experienced. He pushes me to the limit while keeping me from hurting myself. I’m 64 post cancer, total knee replacement, ankle fusion, overweight etc etc, and my bench press has gone from 105lbs a year ago to 210 lbs, aiming for 225lbs over the next 5 weeks. I’m squatting 225lbs and working towards 300. Yes, you can make surprising gains in your 60s.

Almost 62. Retired at 60, determined to get jacked like I was in my younger days. ( last couple years was mostly BJJ and pushups ). Started doing volume like I used to and was making gains. Then ran across Mentzer and Yates HIT videos and decided to try it and WOW !!!!! Gains through the roof ! I’ll never go back to volume. I’m benching 245, working out on incline with 205….DB bench press with 100 lb dumbbells. In 14 month my body has really changed. I packed on a lot of muscle. I do TRT to keep myself in a normal range. I supplement with creatine and try to get about 1 gram of protein per goal body weight pounds. 2024, I am going to see if I can pack on another 10 pounds of muscle….and slowly drop 20-25 pounds of body weight. Loving life !

Loved this video ! I’ve been doing your program and taking up to 8 of your supplements every day ! And I’ve lost over 100 pounds and am my lightest since I was a teenager and my strongest ever (I’m 56 and been doing it for 3 and a half years). But recovery, consistency and intensity are the keys to success. The best advice you ever gave me on a video was “if your veins on your neck don’t look like they are going to burst, your not doing it right” I live by that and have seen incredible results. And because I concentrate on correct form, when I do get minor injuries (tears, ligament strain, etc I recover in days, not weeks. Keep up the great work !! 🤠💪👍

Proof positive; it always comes back to the basics; intensity, diet and recovery.

I'm just getting started here at 49. I don't expect things to happen overnight, but I do love when I improve and surprise myself at the gym. I'm not looking to get "ripped" like my goal was when I was in my 20's, rather just build muscle and endurance to handle the health challenges that I'll face in the second half of my life. My focus is more on injury prevention, continuing to enjoy life- backpacking trips, kayaking trips, bicycle touring, and just good form at my job which is phycical work, going up and down flights of stairs, lifting up to 100lbs unassisted, etc. Love doing progressive overload. I use less weight, more reps, add weight with each set. I also slow down and do my weights more delieberately and like you say- use full range. Will definitely have to try the pre-workout. I get up at 3 in the morning before work to go to the gym.....I need all the help I can get, haha.

64 5'10 173 and still pumping iron and always will. Keeping it light with higher reps is the best way to prevent injuries. Plus you will still put on some size.

I started with 65lbs weights and then 1 month later I bought another 85lbs, so I add more weight every 2 weeks. The resistance bands that I have, I use all of them so I will buy more.

Does your pre workout give the kinda tingling that feels like needles poking your scalp? I’ve gotten that feeling with every pre workout I’ve ever tried.

Overload is not just increasing the weight, it also includes increasing the number of reps in a set at a given weight, then increasing the weight and increasing the reps again! A full range of motion is great for flexibility and mobility, it is however not necessary for hypertrophy! Research shows that lengthened partials are significantly better for growing muscle than a full range of motion! Incorporating lengthened partials into your workout by either doing them at the end of a set when they have become all you can do to continue a movement or as a set of only lengthened partials will induce more growth than a full range of motion alone! It is far more important to get the muscle to as long of a stretched position as you can without pain than to be as contracted as you can! Not even questionable research is clear! Full contraction or squeezing a fully contracted muscle is not necessary to elicit the greatest amount of Hypertrify in multiple studies! Holding in a stretched position for 30 to 60 seconds at the end of a set also stimulates greater hypertrophy than just ending the set and dropping the weight!

Empty stomach, 3 aspirin, black coffee and 2pac music seems to work with me. It's probably a placebo affect but that's my recipe. All workouts followed by whey protein shake. 62 and on a year long plateau but love the way I look. Anymore I just look at it as preservation of what I like to look like instead of building more muscle however I have just doubled my workout routine so maybe that will put more muscle on me. I lift every other day so I may not be getting enough recovery time, I'm not sure. If it doesn't that's OK, I still love to work out. Almost on year 3 of this, saw a ton of progress with weight loss and muscle building the first year but hit a wall on progress. Most of my friends my age are 1/3 of what they used to be when they were young while I enjoy that feeling still at my age. I think diet has a lot more to do with that than lifting. I make sure and get 1g protein per pound daily, eat no sweets, sugar drinks, complex carbs or seed oil foods. I was surprised at the damage seed oils do to the body.

Do we still do progressive overload if your joints hurt?

I'm 64 5'10 173 and I do mostly lower weight ,high reps now to prevent injuries. And I maintain my size and mass. Lifting is for life and if you get hurt now you ruin it for the years you need it the most.

No, back off the weight and give your joints a rest. Need to take a full week off every few months let your body heal.

@@musicman7297 What amount or % of hypertropic training do you suggest for maintaining what I got...I can't grow any muscles even with 10 sets a week, 6 days a week PPL's with pregressive overload, and I am afraid I will get a really really good stretch when my shoulders pop out of their joints and really tug on those muscle groups!

Don’t forget, and he mentioned this in a previous video, he’s been working out for 20 years+. That’s why he probably has the body he has now. I just don’t believe the average guy, over 50, starting out now, can build that amount of muscle. I’m finding it impossible.
