Torreys Peak and Grays Peak the Epic Way: Kelso Ridge Traverse

Torreys Peak and Grays Peak are two of the most popular 14ers in Colorado. Their proximity makes for an awesome way to hike two Colorado 14ers in a single day. But, while most hikers take the standard class 1 routes to each summit, if anyone is looking to add a little extra spice to the day, that's where the Kelso ridge traverse comes in! Kelso Ridge is an offshoot from the main trail that climbs directly up an epic ridgeline to the summit of Torreys Peak. And while the Kelso ridge is absolutely epic, it is not to be taken lightly! The route requires plenty of class 3 scrambling, some challenging route finding, and, to top it all off, requires hikers to traverse across a gnarly knife edge with harrowing drop offs on both sides in order to reach the summit. From the summit of Torreys Peak, the Kelso ridge route joins up with the main trail to give up vertical (!) and hike back up to the summit of Grays Peak before hiking back down into the valley and back to the parking lot. If you're not up for a spicy ridgeline, hiking Torreys and Grays Peak as a double 14er is enough fun in and of itself, but if you enjoy a little class 3 climbing, Kelso ridge has it all!

Ran into you guys that day. Short story, we found a car key up on Torreys. Picked it up and did Grays. Headed back to the trailhead and a guy we had chatted with earlier was asking if anyone had found car keys up at the mountain. When I pulled out his car keys he was in AWE. Lots of trail magic that day. Cheers!

Chris that is so awesome that you picked up that guy's keys and got them back to him! And here's some more trail magic for you. Right after we left we saw an exhausted looking guy walking down that steep road so we stopped to give him a ride -- and it was your guy! We had plenty of time to talk on the way back down that gnarly road to his car, and he told us the whole story about how you found his keys. Trail magic for sure! Such a pleasure to meet you! ❤️

This is a great hike, done this a couple of times. Always make sure to start early and be heading down by noon, storms always rolling in in the afternoon, been on the top with my girlfriend while her 2’ of hair was standing straight up. We ran down as fast as possible. We told the mountain goat at the summit he may want to head down as well. 😂

Cheers David! Ya we've really been enjoying both the similarities and differences between the Rockies and the Sierra, but one thing for sure -- we're bailing out of the Rockies now that the snow is crazy. They definitely get the big snows a month or two before the Sierra. Super glad you enjoyed this one -- it was one of our favorite hikes of the fall, along with that beautiful one to Conundrum hot springs. Hope you're doing great!! ❤️

ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. What a beautiful and difficult hike with an exceptional video editing, I loved the few drone images, which will allow you in the future incredible shots. I repeat myself, what a pleasure to hear the music and the voice of ELISE, which gives another dimension to the difficulty of this high-flying climb. I was scared when you rode the crest that looked like a giant shark fin that the wind did not hesitate to sweep away shamelessly. Kisses to you both.
