when i was a boy in the early sixty's, we would drive down each summer to visit grandparents in Englewood. we would drive out to Sanibel and Captive islands and spend the day. just a sandy road down the middle with picnic tables scattered around. great shelling and swimming. this storm must have hit at high tide to produce such a storm surge.

It was a very powerful Cat 4,almost a 5. High tide has very little bearing on storm surge at that point. Offshore waves 30-40 feet. Basically,on shore ,becomes open Gulf Of Mexico. Find the video "Hurricane Andrew -- As it Happened" issued 1992, same year of the storm. It is utterly compelling. The boots on the ground were like no other then and since. It is on purpose. Media consolidation has resulted in a mockingbird press where these two hours were straight from WSVN, the local NBC Miami affiliate at the time, were not only tracking the storm with NOAA/NHC's Bob Sheets who was as genuine as genuine could be as was Brian Norcross, fired from this station for doing all the right things for the people of So. Florida broadcasting non-stop over the then analog airwaves where one could use a battery operated TV to see, predict, prepare. GW Bush saw to the end of analog into hideous digital that, compared to analog infrastructure, remains a dismal failure IMHO.

The storm surge barrier wall totally failed and saving money by using the small sound sand bars as miniature islands for the roadway major mistakes. They must remove all the submerged asphalt, exposed asphalt and rebuild a new elevated causeway bridge system the entire length from FT Meyers Beach to Sanibel Island. The massive environmental cleanup is going to take years, the local shrimp and other fishing industry in the area destroyed for years as the water and land are deeply contaminated with oil, tar, diesel, fiber glass, asbestos, lead, pesticides, gasoline, glass, metal, PCBs, chemicals, latex, plastics, etc.

New requirements were put into effect following Andrew. However, it is not known whether these strict standards were made state law. One can have all the best materials but since most contractors use foreign, unskilled labor (Fl. is a right-to-work state meaning cheapness wins the day) and inspectors have their palms greased as does the Florida legislature infamous for their graft regarding the decades of shady developments sold at top dollar where problems are spotted from day one and getting said contractor or developer to make good -- welcome to the real estate racket called Florida. One of the best references on corruption in Florida politics was written by Miami Herald columnist and author Carl Hiaasen when the Herald was owned by Knight Ridder, the only paper to expose GW Bush's claims Iraq had WMD were utterly false. Soon the paper was bought out and now it's more mockingbird press.

Who told you hurricanes would get more frequent and stronger? This year was the quietest year yet for storms... the issue is this is an area that is prone to flooding and was on the bad side of the hurricane. The storm surge is what caused all this. The wind was violent and bad, but most concrete houses can withstand it no problem - if built properly. The water is what does the most damage and is most life threatening.

South Seas resort was closed for almost two years. I was born in Miami in the early 50's and lived in Florida until 2014. When my career ended, I could not afford to stay, so I moved North. We vacation in Florida once or twice a year during the off seasons when prices are lower. We spent a week in a time share condo in South Seas (beginning and end of video) right before Ian hit. Most of those fancy homes on the north end are indeed rentals, daily, weekly and some can be rented monthly in the off season. Most of the staff that we talked to in the resort and restaurants on Sanibel and Captiva cannot afford to live there. They take a group shuttle bus from Ft. i'm sorry, but i can't have any smpathy for you folks, did you not have enough sense to know, that one day this would happen? i mean if you build in a flood zone, or as this was a hurricane zone, that this would happen eventually??? us folk's in tornado alley are just liabal for our well being by the luck of the draw if it lands on us. living in a flood plane of a beach coast is not if it will happen, it's when will it happen...

The building codes have improved significantly. My father lives in a manufactured home in Englewood. His park was 80% destroyed. But his home is newer than most and survived with minimal damage. Even his carport is standing. There was a time when NO mobile home would survive.

@@vjhreeves any of these homes are well built but incurred extensive damage to the first floor but are still standing.

All the ones with solar panels on the roof do not belong here. Go back to your previous states of residence and keep voting the way you did.

Matthew 7:24-27 KJV 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, WHICH BUILT HIS HOUSE UPON THE SAND. 27 AND THE RAIN DESCENDED, AND THE FLOODS CAME, AND THE WINDS BLEW, AND BEAT UPON THAT HOUSE, AND IT FELL, AND GREAT WAS THE FALL OF IT. 😎🎸
