I am super proud to announce the release of an eBook project I have been working on over the past few months! This book is part one of a series that will cover the histories of every Division that was active in the British Army from September 1939 - January 1947. Part one covers the Armoured & Cavalry Divisions. The histories in the book cover a Divisions full story, from its formation to disbandment, and everything in between, including movements, actions, planned moves, key dates, commanders etc. Also included is a full outline of a Divisions movement in the U.K. and in the post-war period, two topics that are often overlooked in the historiography of the British Army. For some of the Divisions, such as the 9th Armoured, 10th Armoured and the 1st Cavalry, this is the first time in over 80 years that their war chronicle is told in full. If you are interested and would like to purchase a copy of the book, be sure to check out the link below: payhip.com/livethforevermore

speaking 'of leading the way, your BC. rgr. that after the military, in 2006, i served in RC-north-mazar sheriff for years and then kabul. this is great from a historical perspective of october 2001. not of these mens' doing; look at the waste for the nest 2 decades. 2,476 US personnel (civilian/military) killed. we drop the 20yrs of doctrine, policy, run away with our tail between our legs and "surrender". it was a policy/doctrine surrender not "a" bs: withdraw. after two unconditional surrenders in europe and asia in late-1945, then most of the military personnel "withdrew" back to the U.S. "that" was a withdrawal.

We should have fought the entire war this way. Kept Big Army and Big Air Force the hell out of theater. Just raid after raid after raid until we killed Omar, Haqqani and OBL. The day we started occupying the cities and interfacing with the new Afghan "government", it was over. By the time I arrived in theater in 2007, the momentum was gone. It was just chaos. A shame, really. I'm glad we got OBL, but I think we could have done this whole theater of war very differently and achieved the same results.

So, SOCOM's first major raid into Afghanistan was conceptually very much like Desert One? Was this meant as a big 'F U' to their detractors? A way of saying: 'See!? We can make this stuff work!' Whatever it was, it was bloody impressive.

More that Desert One was a blueprint for further operations that just needed more training and honing capabilities. Desert One led to airfield seizure being a standard mission for the Ranger Bns and also the creation of TF160, which would later become the 160th SOAR.

SOF actions in Afghanistan started with much smaller teams inserting with CIA into the North to join up with Ahmad Shah Massoud's organization and the rest of the Northern Alliance, laser designate targets, etc.
@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack Жыл бұрын
Yeah, SAD and JSOC stuff was going on before, or at least concurrent, with the Ranger operation, so it is technically wrong to say this was the first SOF operation. Maybe first "white SOF" operation.
@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack Жыл бұрын
On the other hand, vid title says first "SOF raid," so that needs to be taken into consideration: preliminary operations might not be classified as raids, but as dropzone establishment, reconnaissance, or securing VIPs.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Жыл бұрын
@@LibertysetsquareJack Agree, the number of troops up North were much smaller, but both were classic special forces operations, and the guys up north did do combat, mostly designating targets. I believe CIA/SAD were in Northern Afghanistan the last week of September 2001, and SOF teams followed shortly after, possibly the first week of October. All of that happened a couple weeks before Operation Rhino in the South.
@BrianT175
@BrianT175 Жыл бұрын
Laser designation didn't happen til later. Jawbreaker teams inserted in the North late Sept with SF and perhaps Delta following in October. But that was preliminary meetings in "friendly" territory. I don't know when they begin actively engaging the Taliban. And reading further, SF didn't insert into the North until the night of Oct 19th, the same night this raid took place.
@dallasyap3064
@dallasyap3064 Жыл бұрын
Well technically the SOF was referring to military SOF and not SAD. But yes SAD was the first one in, they infiltrated Northern Afghanistan on 26th September just 15 days after 9/11. Their job was mostly establishing relationships with the Northern Alliance leaders (such as Fahim Khan and Abdul Dostum) and paving the way for the introduction of the Army SFs, assist in organizing insurgency and preparing the NA rebels with weapons and equipment. Both Army SFs and the Rhino Ranger force insertions were conducted in the night of 19th October almost the same time.

@LibertysetsquareJack
@LibertysetsquareJack Жыл бұрын
Span would still be considered the first casualty, in terms of hostile fire or enemy action being what put him out; the five Rangers were wounded (two mortally), but not from hostile action. Granted, further info could be declassified in future, but as of right now Span is officially the first KIA, while the two Rangers were wounded during the course of an operation, not from hostile action.

The "we did it because we could" method of operation lol I love it. Sometimes you don't have to directly engage an enemy to show them they're outmatched. In Iraq we carried out patrols at night because the enemy couldn't see us, but we could see everything. The Iraqi insurgents were a fearless bunch, but they did not fuck with us when the sun went down, and when we would move on them, it put the fear of God into them. Time and time again, I'd watch our 11B's kick in doors while I sat buttoned up in an Abrams tank chainsmoking Newports waiting for the word to swing the turret on anything they thought was sketchy. What a time that was.
