I used to feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting advice out there, especially since much of it is based on male-focused research. I experimented with fasting, more protein, eating in the morning-you name it-but nothing clicked until I realized two things: every woman is different, and we need to experiment to find what works for us. Letting go of the stress to 'do it right' made me healthier and happier. Plus, much advice targets already healthy women. For me, the key was healing my gut first. Listen to your body, try what resonates, and trust your results!

@@livewellbewellsarahHi Sarah! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. So, I am 50 years old recently post menopausal (completed 12 months without my periods; I don’t know why this sounds like an achievement! 😄). Felt really horrible, was not functioning properly so went on HRT (Estradiol gel and micronised progesterone tablet) and it changed my life. However, I had noticed a gradual but noticeable decrease in strength in perimenopause, I could not find the energy when gardening and other household chores. When I hit menopause, I saw a noticeable loss of muscle in my shoulders area, it kind of shrunk! I swim for fitness once a week and developed frozen shoulders which seemed to have improved but not 💯 with HRT. I have recently started practicing Yoga and Pilates on a daily basis. I learned from your guest Dr Stacy that I should be doing resistance training and weight lifting. My question is: since I feel such weakness in my arms shoulders area, do I need to first check the reason for my sarcopenia before I adopt these exercise routines or will the exercises by themselves help me gain my muscles back eventually? I am worried that I will end up injuring myself as I don’t have the strength to lift meaningful weights. Does Dr Stacy recommend testing and supplementing with testosterone or DHEA in cases such as mine? I am sure there many other women in my boat! Also, I am big on protein intake and will add a protein drink (any good one you know of?) as per Dr Stacy’s recommendations as one can only eat so much! 😉 Thank you so much and I wish you health! 🙏

Honestly love this content and have been following Dr Sims. I take issue with her use of the term “cis” women in this episode - I have watched her a ton and haven’t heard her use this term which is an ideological and unscientific reference. She correctly emphasizes the metabolic sex differences between women and men and references this constantly in her work. Dr Sims, I am sure that you know that there are no “cis women” only women!
@Coffee_is_ready6 күн бұрын
Constantly referencing may. Be unnecessary. But I would assume that there are difference between women with the female sex and women born male sex, aka trans women. Their challenges may be different from either cis men or cis women. Especially, if the ate on hormones, it makes a scientific differnence.
@Coffee_is_ready6 күн бұрын
Of course, you could continue to argue that not all women are the same. There are enough auto-immune and hormonal challenges, e.g., pcos that makes on thing work for one woman but not for the other.

I listen to quite some podcasts on the subjects of glucose, caffeine, hormones, fasting, how oatmilk for example is just starch and highly processed, cleaner eating etc. I am a bit confused why you would say: Eat within 30 min after waking up? What about melatonine? What about trying not to intake caffeine within the first 1-2 hours after waking up? What about the big glucose spikes that just promote cravings during the day etc? Hopefully I get some answers later on in this podcast…😊

I think that no rule fits everyone. In other words, you gotta find what works for your own body. I have fasted a few times (not intermitent fasting, but 5-day fastings and they did wonders for me). I think that intermitent fasting and caring for your glucose spikes will show their benefits in the long run. Well, so basically the best advice is do what works for you and makes you feel good. Good luck Edit: protein powder makes me have stomach discomfort. Also, eating megaprocessed stuff (and protein powder could not be more processed) I dont think that it is a good idea. The hardest is for female life long obesity like me. 2 years old to 63 years old. I’ve fought my whole life and still have 60 lbs to lose. Your descriptions are for regular people, not me. What you say is what I did and gained weight every single time (or sabatoged my weight loss). Oh I felt great as I put the weight on with 30 -30-40. Mind you, perfect diets, no processed foods, no sugar, honey or other sugars. Only stevia and occassional erythritol. Allulose gave me headaches. 30-30-40 and couldn’t give me enough energy to make it through the day. 4 hour a day training caused severely enlarged heart. Hiit with mild intensity 3 times a week keeps me going. I’ve reversed my diabetes (unless I eat above 50 grams of carbs a day). I am fat intolerant also. It is amazing I have no mental health issues and have had a very successful life. Wonderful marriage for 44 years so far. No birth control and 2 children. I hope what you say does actually help others out there. My Bmi is not high enough for weight loss shots (29).

That being said, how do you get enough whole amino acid profile protein with with a predominantly plantbased diet, and is the 1.6gr per kg of bodyweight the actual bodyweight or the optimal bodyweight? I’m assuming the first bc we have little data to establish an optimal bodyweight.

Every single one of us is different, and we have to do what works for us as an individual... I feel like my head is going to explode when I come on to KZbin. intermittent fasting changed the game for me - gained 35 pounds during menopause in like 6 months was freaking crazy had been on acid meds for reflux for years and was insulin resistant - fat was all belly - I’m almost 3 years in and I fasted the first year 18/6 then went to typically 16/8 / I eat quality food targeting good macros. I dropped the weight the first year and stopped the acid meds within 6 months. I did start hormone replacement as well. / I’m focusing deliberately on strength training and continuing to understand the importance of my nutrition - the standard American diet is absolute garbage on every level.

I thinks it’s good to research multiple sources in relation to fasting protocols for women, Our bodies are highly intelligent, If we have enough stored glycogen and fat our body will burn through these fuels before it eats at our lean tissue. If our body fat is above 20% it has no reason to pick muscle over glycogen or fatty tissue. I don’t think fasting encourages us to become insulin resistant because fasting for 14+ hours keeps our blood sugar lower, that injunction with resistance training actually increases the chances of us holding onto our muscles. What we must be aware of is decreasing strength if we become weaker or unable to increase our resistance load/volume that’s a signal we need more calories from nutrient rich food. Fasting increases HGH (human growth hormone) and insulin when we eat helps with muscle gains. As we loose weight our lean tissue will shrink due to water loss but that doesn’t mean we have lost lean tissue, our metabolism will also adjust to our weight as we get leaner so fewer calories will be required that don’t mean our metabolism is slow it’s just done what we have trained it to do by consuming less energy. Many women have experienced positive results from fasting along with resistance training, they’re dexa scans reports have revealed fat loss and lean tissue increases so everyone is different there are so many factors involved, age, diet, activity, strength, medication, menopause, stress levels, health issues so it’s really important to look at all these factors before we rule out anything. 😊

We need more long term data on women re: fasting. Fasting is a stress on the body. Indigenous, especially, nomadic folk had cyclical food availability. Even ag a hundred or so years ago was not non fasted, so, yes, the body can do it and survive and even reproduce if the min is available, but I'm not yet convinced a year round daily fasting routine is healthy long term.

23:50-high protein, low carb diets have been around forever. They were super popular in the 70’s and again in the early 2000’s. The “Protein Power” books in the nineties were extremely popular, and they hold up really well science-wise. Protein Power required counting protein grams per pound of lean mass, and emphasized non-processed food. The headlines emphasize the low carbs, but the books emphasize high protein. Atkins knew years before everyone else that cholesterol in food doesn’t cause high cholesterol, and that butter was better than the margarine that was pushed on us in the 70’s and 80’s. I still stand by the Protein Power recommendations, and a lot of Atkins’.

Find yourself a good physiotherapist and get that shoulder mobility back. A PT doesn't have the same expertise. I injured my shoulder badly this year lifting too heavy and the physio was key to recovery. I'm 62 and back building muscle now.

How does this 2x per week high intensity training such as EMOMs etc not trigger high cortisol when someone is already struggling with chronic high cortisol and can't lose weight because of stress?

I really enjoyed this conversation . i a I’m going to try to introduce HIT, unfortunately Ive been listening to the Bro science dudes! I am 63 walk hills 4miles/day and weight train 4 days a week10-12 reps per set…should i shot for heavier 6-8 reps? I’m concerned about injury at my age…that will ruin my progress for sure. i torn my hamstring tendons..yes all 3 tendons…awful about 2 years ago in a biking accident so Im nervous!
@saskhiker39352 ай бұрын
Don't increase you weight all at once so your body adjusts to heavier shorter reps. Work your way up. Increase weight incrementally. Focus on quality over quantity. As for hill workouts. Try shorter more intense running sprints in middle of walk but only go for a 45 Minute walk. Still do your 4 miles walks but do it 2-3 days a week. Add the sprints or intense jump rope intervals. Try cutting your weights to 2-3 times a week to give your body more of a chance to recover. It's recovery that matters. With age weights 3 times a week may not give you enough recovery time. Stacy talks a lot about power and strength and less cardio. So try and mix up your workouts. Less cardio days more power like jumping, sprinting. I added the jumping to build bone strength that older women need.

So happy to have found women who are working to separate the chaffe from the wheat where the major male pundits refuse to even consider the possibility of how we may respond differently, say when it comes to the carnivore diet for instance but unfortunately it is not just the men who refuse to tease out this subject.

if I use bone broth protein to load my coffee in the morning prior workout, does that count ? they say that bone broth protein doesn't have a complete amino acid profile, and so it doesn't count thouards your daily protein intake .

I'm pretty sure as long as you have a variety of other protein sources, you'll hit your total amino acid goals for the day. So if that is how you get your first protein and it is what you can consistently do, keep doing it.

Great information! And from my 76 years of being a very active woman, I know that Stacy is so very right! I follow her recommendations and they’re working for me! I have 5 “daughters” and 8 granddaughters (and 5 “sons” plus 5 grandsons). I know they’re all watching us age and will learn from us, both the negatives and the positives! Fortunately we’re both heathy, fit and active! And, I know they like that for many reasons, including that we’re not needy😏 As I listen to you two talk, I am so delighted my girls will have the information, support and courage to become the strong, healthy, happy women I know they can be! And that my boys/men will have knowledge and respect for women’s health that wasn’t apparent in my generation! Much gratitude🙏

This was terrific. I never heard of Stacy Sims. I just started following her. I'm 53 and usually do a 12 hr fast. I shoot for 90-100g protein/day. I'm 125lbs. I wake up hungry and always want & crave a challah roll when I get down to my kitchen. Is this bc I didn't have enough protein the day before? Ido if Stacy is looking at these comments but would love to know what she thinks. Subscribed to this channel. Thank you

@saskhiker39352 ай бұрын
If your an older woman your body has more trouble metablizing protein, so you need more protein. Try and shoot for 1 gram of protein per pound of your ideal body weight.

So as i'm sitting here watching the video comments keep popping up but when I click on the particular comment, It's nowhere to be found. Happened 3 times. Thoughts? Instructions on how to find them? Also, honey, no matter how its processed is still sugar and most menopausal, women or anybody with insulin resistance should not touch it. In addition, I'd rather have a steak, or bacon and eggs for breakfast(or first meal) which is much more beneficial and satiating than any processed protein powder. Also, anything oat related is highly inflammatory. Finally, intermittent and long-term fasting works for me and as I see in the comments that actually ARE visible, for other women as well.

I am 47 and my ideal breakfast is 2 ounces/56 grams of lean ground Turkey scrambled with 2 eggs and 2-3 egg whites (satiety in the AM) and is high protein. Works for me! I also get 25-32 grams of fiber per day and it keeps my poops regular and normal.

I think fasting for women has to be cycled with menstruation. Saying fasting for all women is bad is not correct - it is more nuanced.

I really love your content, but I may not be able to continue listening because I don’t know if you realize you slip into vocal fry so frequently. If this doesn’t bother anyone else, my apologies for bringing it up. I just thought you might want the feedback.

Dr Sims. How can we fix our microbiom? My daughter broke out with horrible acne at 17 when she has never had it before. We were told her microbiom is messed up and it taking gut meds but with no improvement.
@readaloudkids140710 күн бұрын
1. Take probiotic supplements. 2. Eat probiotic foods like yogurt and kefir. 3. Eat a large variety of foods every week. Even a few bites of a new food will improve gut health. But I don’t mean a new bread or packaged food. I mean a new fruit or vegetable or meat. Increasing variety strengthens your gut bacteria. I eat a little of each of these things every week and my gut health has improved immensely! -almonds-pecans-walnuts-pistachios-apples-bananas-avocados-chia seeds-flax seeds-pumpkin-blueberries-blackberries-raspberries-strawberries-broccoli-cauliflower-carrots-spinach-chard-lettuce-celery-garlic-ginger-chicken-chicken broth-beef-tuna-salmon-eggs And here are some I throw in once a month or so: grapefruit, dates, grapes, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, corn, edamame, sweet potato, chick peas, black beans, cantaloupe 4. Might want to take an acid supplement- the kind that actually builds stomach acid, not reduces it. Sometimes we are not getting nutrients from the food we eat because we are not digesting it well enough because our stomach acid was low. That was what happened to me.
