I understand how this feels so extraordinary in America, but here in big european cities, it's definitely NOT uncommon to live in such a small space ! Love the layout of her studio, it feels really homey and quite spacious for the size.

True, definitely not uncommon in some other parts of the world, but certainly not the norm in the U.S. It is important that smaller spaces are built efficiently.

I live in a micro studio in london (I think mine is actually smaller than hers) and i love it. The best thing about them is that it makes you spend less on unnecessary purchases because of the limited space that you have. It's definitely the right move if you want to save money in the long run

It makes me uncomfortable that these are being touted as the next thing. (I am/was subbed to a bunch of minimalist and small home channels.) There needs to be a discussion on why celebrities and the rich have no problem living in multi thousand square foot homes and the rest of us plebs are struggling. As well, if the government goes and does another lock down, how is anyone suppose to have two weeks (or more, lol) of food? That fridge is tiny. To each their own (and I'm so happy Margarita loves her place & small places are excellent ways to get into the housing market) and I think we all have a bit too much "stuff" but seeing celebrities/rich/powerful buy multiple houses that have rooms dedicated for artwork, a second kitchen, ten bedrooms with eleven bathrooms for a family of three, I really got to wonder why this juxtaposition isn't talked about.
@MonicaChurch

I agree HUGE homes are SO unnecessary. Giant mega 50 million dollar mansions make me cringe. Small well designed spaces are so much better!
@barrenaronofsky
@barrenaronofsky Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad that someone said this because it's been on my mind a lot lately. Whether it's renting or buying regular people are being priced out of housing markets in nearly every city and told to spend more and more for increasingly small spaces. Microstudios are great for some, but we're accelerating towards a future where folks are going to live in glorified cubbies while the wealthy create single-family homes that take up entire zip codes.
@mallorygraf8574

Not to play devil's advocate but celebrities get paid by how much business they bring to a particular brand/movie/show etc. So if a company like ABC/Disney makes a show like "Grey's Anatomy", which has brought in 3 billion dollars to the company since it premiered, of course they need to get paid what they are worth to the company. Plus celebrities have no privacy once they leave their houses so their houses have to be big...they don't go out as much as you would think because of all the attention they get outside their home. So yes, if you have the money and spend a lot of time at home...get a big house. Of course, the mega mansions are disgusting but really that has to do with zoning issues and whatever policy one's local government has with building those huge structures. Some cities say "do what you want' and others have strict zoning laws.

If I earned between 5 to 10k a month I'd definitely live in a place like this, at least for a year or two while or after college, it's a great opportunity to save some money, whether to invest or just have some savings. but definitely don't see an issue in getting a big apartment or house. Just not with neighbors close by or window to window.

When you’re coming from a place where rent is high, affordable micro studios are worth it. I live in the Bay Area, California and lived in a 200sq ft mirco studio downtown San Jose for only $1400 with parking. Compared to $2000+ for studios in the area it was a no brainer for me. The extra savings was worth it.

I looked at a LOT of micro studios and lofts in the area when I was apartment hunting, but didn’t find anything that met my needs (full time artist and designer with a LOT of necessary tools/paint that goes with that, and two cats). Ultimately, I ended up getting an open 1-br that is close to the i90 on-ramp since I work on the East side as well. The cats love it since they now have 3/4 walls to jump up high on and privacy to do their “business”. I love it because the kitchen is galley style which leaves the rest of the space open for my creative passions and work stuff. My commute has been cut in half from where I used to live as well, which is great since my company only lets us work remote two days a week.

Hey Monica, great video and thanks for making this video as it’s important to highlight the rising rental rates in Seattle. Giving you lots of love from Women in Tech. Specially in Seattle we live in the city coming from various backgrounds and even though we have decent tech salaries, people fail to understand the cost of living in Seattle as well as necessities of safe communities and being smarter with money as most of us have loans to payback. This is great content and echoes so much with tech crowd and issues they face in daily lives.

I have lived a few years in small apartments, 400 sq feet is about the minimum for me, I lived in a space that was 64 sq ft and quickly found that having to dress and remember to grab keys just to go to the bathroom sucks. $1000/month for anything smaller than 500 sq ft is ridiculous.

In Seattle 100K is minimum wage it's really hard to survive on 100,000 or anything less than that just for one person let alone if you have a family. I have also lived in a few of these micro apartments in Seattle and they run more like 1300 to 1800 now not including utilities parking pet rent. Also note that a lot of places charge you to park at work usually around 2 to 500 a month. Also to park in the apartment complex it's usually around 200 to $300 a month. Pet rent is usually anywhere from 50 to $100 a month.

That is actually not bad for a micro studio. The fact it has a full kitchen and washer and dryer is rare for those at least from what I've seen. I looked at a couple micro studios when I first moved to Seattle in Greenwood and Maple Leaf and couldn't bring myself to pay the $700-800/month (back in 2015) for them and opted to have roommates in single family homes instead. Neither had their own kitchen and only one had parking for extra money. I'm guessing she is living minimally and saving money to buy her own place at some point or just keep costs to a minimum which is really smart. I bought a 600sqft condo with garage and only pay a little more than she does thanks to saving money so it shows you how buying still is better value over renting. Even 600sqft seems small but I can't even imagine living in 170sqft these days, I'm pretty sure the rooms I rented in the past were larger.

In Japan there are apartments that are even smaller, down to capsule hotel size/coffin homes 😳

Way to small for me but the fact it has a washer/dryer in unit I could do it on the short term if I just needed to take over a friends lease while I was in between leases. I would also have to pay for a storage unit for the majority of my stuff though.

I did NOT know we had a Daiso in the USA!!! I was introduced to it when I lived in Korea. I wonder if the prices are comparable here. I love small spaces. I purposely looked for a small updated studio apartment. Less to clean. Less to furnish. I can use my money on other things.

This is a great choice for someone who travels a lot for work or spends a few nights a week sleeping at a partner's space. I guess it makes sense too if you have friends over and can spend time in a common space. The landlords make so much money though in this type of housing.

Yes I would live in one. I'm a senior and that is less space to travel to get an item. 😆🤣

I wasn't expecting to see my old apartment building. Moved this month bc of parking but other than that, the place is great if you get a unit with a washer/dryer combo :)

I lived in a 300 square ft place with my husband as our first place together. That 170 sounds so teeny!

I was on the same situation 6 months ago, I was going through a divorce and couldn’t find anything that was a considerable size for me and the dog. In the meantime I was still living with my husband which was pretty much hell. I finally find a studio in Seattle for $1300 which is way more than I pay for mortgage but well that’s life

This would be a great option if you lived out of town and needed a place to stay in the City during the week. Not yet willing to trade-in 3,600 sq foot house with very large lot and 3-car garage; but as a second space or for work it would be great!

Brilliant use of the space, it has a washing machine. Plus she has all these community rooms to go to. I like how the clothing storage is quite bi, but airy. She could have put a wardrobe there, but it would have made the space look much smaller.

I definitely have too many books to have such a small space, and that's something I'm not willing to sacrifice. But I do think there's a lot you can do to a small space and still make it feel like a big place.

I think only thing is missing is parking and full kitchen but it is Capitol Hill so it is understandable. Some people still need car to get to work cuz not everyone is in tech. Monica you should do Microsoft tour!

IIRC the other couple before had a cat, but I do think that small space gets more difficult when you need a space for their litter box and food/water
