My grandparents were from Motis and Hododului in Romania. (immigrated to U.S.) She made the most wonderful sarmale, it would take her hours as everything was handmade. She also made the mamaliga, my grandfather loved it for breakfast, fried with syrup. She also made Clatite, with rolled up with cottage cheese and grape jelly in them. She made those for us for an after school snack. Oh, and her homemade Colac, that was what I requested as my "birthday cake". Thank you for your video and the memories it brought back to me!

it's not about being clumsy, it's about slipping on ice. There is a certain period in the year where for a few days it's said that if you slip on ice you will get married soon

It's interesting to see her facial expressions, and her eyes... It's interesting the emotional impact of food and taste on someone. Her eyes were sparkling when she was talking about sarmale (mine would sparkle too). Towards the end, she became melancholic, her mood changed. Indeed, it seems she had a nice experience overall.

Nice Romanian at the end there :) Btw many people are afraid to try the jello type food but after they try it i have yet to find one who didn't like it! It looks weird maybe for outsiders but trust me is soo damn good.

I think mamaliga is quite similar to the Italian polenta, but I may be wrong. Yeah, the draft thing is really weird. Don't really know how it all started, but at least the younger generations are growing out of it! Anyway, thank you for such a well balanced view on us, Romanians and I hope this experience gave you nice, everlasting memories.

The thing with "curent" / fear of air currents dates back from the communist era when people were deprived from centralized heating and a lot of them got sick, or fever, teeth pain or influenza (the regime was trying to spare money in order to pay the country debt to IMF, which it was payed after all in 1989, the debt was zero and then, right after, we got ourselves out of nowhere with a "revolution"....). Nowadays some of the elders are very careful about the "domestic" air currents and they over protect their children and grandchildren with advice like "put something over your head" or "shut the window because.....(quote in romanian) este curent (end quoute)" .

All True! It's funny to see - through somebodyelse' eyes - our customs, superstitions, food/dishes, way of living (day-to-day life)... 🤭. You see us... "different"! I see us "normal" in our two or three-roomed flats, using every day public transport, having three-days and nights Christmas celebrations et caetera (=and so on, in "Latin" 😂, closest to our language)... What would shock me if I would go to USA? I have travelled only in 5 European countries.

😂😂😂 where do u go to Romania, which cities? The problem with the "curent" is very strange, I mean I know some people who is careful with that, but I never saw it that big exegeration. The thing is people with teath problems get pain if it is curent or headach. Depends on where u go in Romania u have such a different culture and way of thinking due to the influences of different cultures from different countries which conquist in the past.

just a few notes, People are not fond of AC because you can get serious back pains if you are exposed to AC for long periods of times and because in summer there's a giant differnece in temperature between AC rooms and the temperature outside you can easily get a cold if your body keeps going between 2 temperatures in short periods of times. And being exposed to "curent" is not a superstition, people stay clear of it because in for some people is making them ill. My dad gets throat issues and neck problems if he stays exposed to wind for too long

I am from Romania, and never heard of the "current (wind) issue" :) Maybe there is an issue with older people here on the public transport ... I recall walking in winter time in the snow towards the office [in Bucharest] , some 4km far from my place. It was minus 5-10 Celsius in the morning, and I just got out from the morning shower, hair still wet, and never got sick :) Public transport was really bad in 1988, walking is good for you and refreshing !
