Ven Ajahn You have unique skill to teach dhamma in a simple. practical manner. Your teachings enabled me to witness husband's and mother's last breath within 4 weeks apart as normal without fear grief. I reminded your teaching "remember the good memories", 998 bricks to my children soon after husband passed away that was on my son's 21 b'day, children moved on celebrating good memories they had with dad. Thank you for dedicating the profound talk in memory of my husband. Lalitha +children

I was very depressed after the death of my sister recently in Malaysia, listening to your talks have lifted my mood. I live in Canberra, Australia. I did not know about you until after my sister's death and being a Buddhist, started to look at meditation and Dharma talks as I wanted some peace of mind. Your talk 'What happens after you die' provided a very good insight into death and I felt very relieved after listening to it. May the Blessings of the Triple Gem be with you always. Thank you.

what i learnt from this is, that you should live your life as if it was a great big adventure and if you have any beliefs, that if you think a kid is your nanna in his last life, you should keep it to yourself, because really mate, you should let them be kids and also let them have a lot of fun, cause the secret is they were your nanna in the last life, not this life, so really you should leave the kids alone

there are many ways to give. one can give friendship to those who are lonely, fearlessness to those who are afraid, we can give a smile, a pat on the back, a hug, a meal, a reassuring word, a listening ear .... so much things that can be given without affecting your retirement target! and the greatest gift of all, is the gift of the dhamma =)

Buddhism needs some revision concerning this matter: we need to look inward to discover why and how we are conditioned to fear death and non-existence, because it touches on how we are enslaved by needs and desires. It may all just be a result of natural selection, ordaining that in order to survive and evolve, sentient beings must also evolve complex needs, fears, and desires, and the complex forms of suffering that result.

Redo: See the controversy & criticism sections of the Wikipedia article on Cayce. And see XzmazX's comments below. Maybe watch a Sam Harris YT video on "The End of Faith." And consider becoming more skeptical and less gullible. Xzmaz: The reason that I think that questioning R&R is important (& can't be danced around/tabled) is that prominent monks assert that it is central to Buddhism.If it is central,then so is the doubt & controversy concerning it,& what Bdsm would look like w/o the doctrine.

Thanks for the talks. I understand 'reincarnation' from the scientific point of view that matter cannot be destroyed, and in Buddhism, there is no self, so there is nothing there to be reborn (at least not the self) so it is more like life, or the elements of life are getting recycled. (we are part of life, therefore we are being recycled. Reincarnation is a Hindu belief, not a Buddhist one, but it's been adopted by many who feel comfortable with it. The problem is that the word reincarnation carries a lot of superstition with it. (for westerners) Could you elaborate on this a bit more?

Trapsbrah- I don't dismiss the possibility, but I also think that it's necessary to be rigorous in order to avoid claiming that a hypothesis is true without sufficient evidence. I know that many Buddhists view the doctrines of Karma & Rebirth as central doctrines, but I don't think they have to be, and it's not necessary to throw out meditation if one doesn't believe in them. You might check out Stephen Batchelor's "Buddhism Without Beliefs." Also some Sam Harris KZbin videos.

Evildreamer & Redo: Just because claiming a particular afterlife belief may serve a psychological function doesn't make it true,or even convincing. And BTW, I said that I believed that oblivion is a possibility- not something of which I'm certain. The question that's interesting is:why does the mind crave continuation? If that,as well as all of our other fears, longings, & desires are wired into our neurological structures as a result of nat. selection, maybe extinction is a kind of liberation.

Again a talk that brings tears to the eyes - compassion and loving kindness! But there is a supreme being!.otherwise beginning and endings make no sense. There is always a controller.. not in the way we control however,, from greed and lust. Hard to explain rebirth without explaining the atma - individual soul. WHAT incarnates from body to body? AB knows well enough that many humans, by their actions are heading for an animal body next life. Just talking of human life, misses the big picture.
@XzmazX

to leave the cycle of rebirth yes. But not to go into absolute oblivion without consciousness! what would be the point of that! thats what you described. In buddhist scripture, the buddha describes nirvana as the ultimate peace and happiness. He's talking about leaving rebirth, and entering a permament state of peace and happiness, a solution to suffering. Not just to entire non consciousness

I commented on Stevenson already, but will ignore Cayce.When I said that Buddhism was supposedly "scientific",I meant that it encouraged questioning the authority of dogmas. Aj. Brahm has repeatedly noted this in his videos. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, & it simply doesn't exist for R&R, which means that doubt will persist,even among its supposed adherents. Re:the dogma's psychological function, I was referring to Evildreamer's comment about it giving meaning to life.

its true in buddhism their are many aspects such as rebirth, and that it is taught that usually we can only learnt this at later stages in meditation practice. Although if thats true its inconvenient, its never been taught in buddhism that we should believe in rebirth and karma out of faith. If it is true that rebirth/karma exist, and we can only learn it at later stages in meditation practice, that doesn't make buddhism faith based, as we are not asked to believe it out of faith.

XzmazX- Thanks.I've heard the argument that R&R becomes known in later stages of med'n,& recommend the book "Buddhism Without Beliefs" (Batchelor) by a monk who,after many yrs. of med.,came to a quite diff. conclusion.To say that "if you don't believe it,you haven't meditated properly,or enough",is a kind of Catch-22.Our concepts of/fears & desires re:oblivion,the individual,happiness,etc. are wired into us via millions of yrs. of natural selection.We don't understand what true happiness is.

Trapsbrah - If you're referring to Ian Stevenson's work- assuming that it's valid, even Stevenson wrote that it might indicate that there exists a "minimal version" of reincarnation- i.e. that "something" passes over in some cases. That "something" could be as insignificant as a memory pattern of a few events, rather than a complete consciousness. Nevertheless, many who want to believe in Rebirth immediately leap to the conclusion that it means his work proves that Rebirth is valid.
@Alexisme2012
@Alexisme2012 11 жыл бұрын
Redo: That's a speculation.It seems to me that if R&R exists,then prominent monks like Ajahn Brahm would have greater knowledge of their own past incarnations than others,& would presumably want to spread Buddhism.If they would describe some of their previous lives,providing verifiable facts that they couldn't have known otherwise,then Buddhism would win many converts,& there'd be no need to take any of it "on faith." Buddhism's supposedly "scientific" and not faith-based, except re: Karma/R&R.

obviously if the end goal of meditation was oblivion, that wouldn't exactly be the most beneficial of aims would it! the buddha describes nirvana in the buddhist scriptures, as " serenity, unbelievable joy and bliss" etc etc. I don't know what alex is reading but its not buddhism. perhaps he's trying to read it in ancient indian and becoming a little confused

Alex please ignore redo's terrible representation of buddhism, it is not faith based it IS 100% scientific, if your definition of science is to base your believes solely upon evidence, logical or empirical. Its just that buddhism is self observation, not external observation, thats the only difference between buddhism and western science with regard to where the beliefs come from. And nirvana isn't explained as "non existence" it is explained as a permanent state of the highest happiness.
@XzmazX
@XzmazX 11 жыл бұрын
sorry not alex I meant redo. As I have understood it, the message in buddhism has always been "due to the nature of rebirth, practicing this path becomes even more important. However of course you shouldn't believe this based on faith. You know you are alive for this life, and this path will be worth practicing for the happiness it will bring us in this life. So we don't need to assume rebirth exists to have motivation to practic it" seems its more as a guide for when people do find their eviden
@XzmazX
@XzmazX 11 жыл бұрын
Thats the difference between science and faith is it not? Faith: you believe because others tell you, or because its written somewhere, without evidence, whether its evidence through experience, or logic. Where as science, is believing something to be true only to the amount it has been proven, logical or empirical. The buddha's saying "base your beliefs solely on your own sense of reason" in other words, only on evidence, logical and empirical

Why did he bring up Harry Potter? This man knows nothing. I'm not even a "monk" but this man knows not what it means to live and die. No shit don't fear death it is inevitable. But that doesn't mean death is the end of this existence on this plane. And also you getting everything from nothing doesn't make any sense. Purpose is Purpose. Big bang my small existence. I may be nothing but also I am everything blessed is the Lord who gave me everything even though I take everything I've been through for granted. This world is nothing except a gateway to following absolute truth which has been recorded under the truth from the Lord God unto man. Three is one and one is three.

THIS IS ALSO ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. the buddha says his solution is "a permanent solution to suffering" in other words, " a permanent freedom from suffering and happiness". Secondly, the buddha DESCRIBES NIRVANA, HE DESCRIBES IT AS "PERFECT JOB, HAPPINESS, SERENITY" I don't remember the exact words, but I'M PRETTY SUR EYOU NEED TO BE CONSCIOUS IN ORDER TO EXPERIENCE IT, AND OH YER HE SAYS ITS PERMAMENT, SO THAT IS ETERNITY. please stop miss representing buddhism.
