I have a Tesla S P70D as my sole means of transportation. This video is fundamentally flawed or badly outdated or both. Points to consider: 1) If the reviewer, being the big car guy that he professes to be, had actually READ THE MANUAL, which is available from the touch screen in the car, all his concerns and reservations about charging, range, and charger compatibility would have been addressed. Whether this product or not - if you don't read the manual, you deserve the stress you get by learning everything through trial and error. 2) Most of us do most of our driving locally. As reccomended by Tesla, I had a 240V/50A circuit installed in my garage, and this charges everything very nicely, every night. I leave my garage with a "full tank" every morning and typically use no more than 1/3 of my range. 3) For Highway trips, look at the Tesla supercharger network TODAY - about every 2 hours of driving, there is another one on major interstates. When you plan the trip, the tesla adds the superchargers to your trip plan, even telling you how many minutes it recommends you charge at each one. As you drive, it constantly updates the plan. If you run out of charge, you just aren't paying attention (not unlike running out of gas in a regular ICE car) 4) Supercharger recharges 80% of the battery capacity in 30 minutes according to the manual, I find this to be about right based on experience. I usually need a bio break and a stretch every couple of hours, and the 15-20 minutes it takes to do this is about how long the charge takes. BTW - you can monitor charge state, and pre-heat or cool the car from you smart phone. 5) The comment about "waiting in line for years" is woefully obsolete for the model s, my wait time was 7 weeks, most of which was the rail transit time from the factory to my regional tesla office. This video should not be the basis for your decisions about this car or electric cars in general - it is simply misleading.

+J. Alan Lawson I will agree in tone it is a luxury sedan, and for in town few would drive the range in a week then alone a day so that would cover forgetting to lug it in for most. but for LONGER trips, I personally would still prefer my diesel. I can do a 1500+ mile drive in less than 2 days on less than 300 of fule. The charge time alone on a Tesla would add a day plus to the trip, because I would hit human fatigue limits and not be able to do a strait 17 hour drive. Now if they get auto drive down where the care can be ok with me ZZZZ at the wheal and take its self to a charge station... then we are good to go. I think they want to get it there, just not there yet. Another more radical solution would be building induction charging into the interstate road its self so like charging your phone while you talk on it, you could charge the car while you drive on the interstate. My guess would be that would work like toll fees in practice, if that ever got built

+Philip Br It's still free. You don't pay a big payment for piss and wind, the battery isn't cheap. If you were to buy a BMW for 100k, every few years your total payment on the car would go up around $12k. But in the case of a tesla (assuming they produce a long lasting battery), every few years you would have theoretically payed less on the tesla itself since you are saving.

Will Davis It's an american invention so it makes sense for them to focus on their home infrastructure first. If the UK government would really want to transition to electrical powered cars, they could fund most of the necessary infrastructure, or work out some sort of partnership deal that would speed up the development. I doubt Tesla would decline such a proposal. As for the actual lack of infrastructure, there is a minimal one.

The range of a Tesla Model S is 265 miles (426 km). You could drive the 400 miles from Los Angeles to San Francisco (a 6-hour trip) and only have to stop once for about 30 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger station. There is really no reason for range anxiety with the Model S. It was a bit more dicey back in 2013 when this video was filmed because there were far fewer Supercharger stations, but today Superchargers are everywhere so you never need to worry.

There are plenty of videos online of real owners using Teslas and having little-no problems with charging whatsoever. It seems to me there are a lot of idiots driving these Teslas for 'reviews' and not taking into consideration the change in behaviour that is required at present, whilst the Supercharger network is expanded. To those of you out there who have a Tesla, well done, I am hoping to get one myself in the not-too-distant future. To those who still doubt, who still revel in the outdated 19th century technology that is the internal combustion engine; good luck, and wake up. This is the future, Tesla is (in corporate terms) not even a teenager yet. These are 'growing pains' and once the Model X comes out, and the Gigafactory starts pumping out 400-mile-range batteries for their cars, Tesla will come of age; she will cease to be a spotty teenager with an identity-crisis, and become an intelligent, confident, kind-and-caring hot piece of ass 19 year-old that we all pine after. PS: Yes I'm a pervert, what of it? ;)

It's amazing how people shit on these cars all the time. Too pricey, too long to recharge and etc. Yes, it's not ideal, even experimental in a way. But people, it's just a first step in a long-long trip, the fact that they sale these cars and build all the recharging stations is already amazing! Mindblowing!!! Yes, simple folk can't afford them now, because it's not a cheap technology and you have to invest crazy amounts of money, to get all this moving. Driving this car for a long distance is complete different culture and you have to understand this, is it a unexpected surprise, what you need to recharge it for such a long time? You know, what you are buying, if you need a fast recharge - don't buy it. Musk is a slick businessman, but he's doing a right thing, pushing the complete alternative, not a hybrid, into the market. I remember the first time I heard about "Tesla", it was so experimental and not hugely exposed so it's pleasing to see how the company progressed. Not a 100 percent success, but definitely a success.

Well the reality is that the Tesla S is an electric car. You can actually plug in anywhere. In all the talks about this car i kinda begin to have the feeling that people miss the fact that electricity outlets are much more often than gas stations. Just plug the car somewhere. The only valid point is that it takes time to charge, but hey its about time that things helps us to slow down this fast pace of life ! I enjoy the break :)

Larry Smith Tesla can drive by hundreds of gas stations and get charged for free across the country with more supercharge stations popping up every week. At one point when the gas automobile was starting out they had less stations and more cars than Tesla does now. Tesla's next version will cost thousands less less than the Volt. Of course you know Tesla gives free charging for life at their stations.

Tesla has already demonstrated a battery swap station concept with a cool youtube vid on it. Battery pack on the Model S was designed to be hot swappable. In other words, you will someday have the option of either slow charging (cheap/free), Tesla supercharging (free) or dropping your old pack and installing a new one (for a modest cost). A battery swap takes less time than filling your fossil car's gas tank.

Model S cars were designed from the ground up to be pack swap capable. Adding extra capabilities cost companies extra to design into a product.. Do you think Tesla would spend the extra money to design in a swappable pack --- and have to test all that functionality --- ,knowing they weren't ever going to implement hot swap?
@fenderstratguy
@fenderstratguy 9 жыл бұрын
+Ankush Girotra (((it was just a concept. he never said it's being used.))) Really? Does that mean the functional swap station in Coalinga, CA does not exist? No, it just means you don't have the correct story. lh5.googleusercontent.com/-MZEbOYig0S0/VOgTO1o6fiI/AAAAAAAACG0/klga171EhqI/w689-h517-no/IMG_0780.JPG What actually happened is that they DID a functional swap station and it is still there. Owners are finding the free supercharging across the street is plenty fast enough and they don't NEED to swap. Seems real Tesla owners don't have all this bullshit range anxiety that Tesla non-owners all have. "It's just, people don't care about pack swap. The Superchargers are fast enough that if you're driving from LA to San Francisco, and you start a trip at 9AM, by the time you get to, say, noon, you want to stop, and you want to stretch your legs, hit the restroom, grab a bite to eat, grab a coffee, and be on your way, and by that time, the car is charged and ready to go, and it's free. So, it's like, why would you do the pack swap? It doesn't make much sense."

All we need is for employers, hotels, tourist locations, and stores to start putting charging stations in the parking lots that they already own and maintain. Cities can put them on the parking meters and in the big municipal garages. The auto tech is here and now and ready to change the world. We just need the charging infrastructure to catch up, which should be a relatively easy task since electricity is everywhere. I would much rather pay for just a few dollars worth of kW once in a while than pay over 60 dollars every few days to fill my Jeep. Which is pretty damn often since I am a high mileage commuter. Then, while we go through the next 5-10 years of folks starting to slowly adopt and switch over to EVs, the power companies will have time to start building newer plants and more efficient plants. It's totally doable.

Nice if you want to commute and charge it at work/home. Slightly worse if you go for a cross-country run and have to stop for at least whole hour every 250-300 miles to fully charge it (assuming there's a supercharger available). Even worse if you're just going on holiday and want to drive casually from A to B while stopping for some sightseeing. If you run out of petrol, your breakdown cover or some friendly motorist will get you a canister with enough to get to the nearest station. When you run out of juice in EV, towing with wife and kids at the back and whole day wasted is your only option.

The a/c system is simply not powerful enough to cool the cabin. A friend bought his Model S several months ago and the only negative issue are the small a/c vents and insufficient cold air flow for hot Southern California summers.

Excellent video. You took the Tesla to a trip as if it was a normal car and told what you thought without BIAS. I completely agree with you, some may call you a slob, but personally I think the best thing to happen to the electric car will be to be able to drive and not to constantly worry about the range or charging. You proved California is almost there, wonder if you would do the trip more easily with the 90k version, this 5k extra power could have helped at this first stretch were you almost killed the battery.

This was almost 4 years ago, and the battery capacity and charging speed have improved dramatically since then. Nowadays, there are about 6 Superchargers along that route you could juice up at, and you'd make it there with a single half-hour break.

It's journalism, there would be no story if they didn't add drama. Objectively, 85 kWh is not enough for the U.S. or the world. EVs will need ultimately between 200 and 350 kWh in less than 100 kg if they are to become replacements for current day cars. They can take over the market with 100 kWh or more but people won't be completely satisfied until they match ICE cars. Despite that, mass adoption will happen sooner and it will be great for those that make and sell the cars and batteries because for the next decade and a half they'll have something new to convince people to change their cars. Think of them like devices that get a bit better and with more features every year. From a physics perspective, such an energy dense battery is possible and was already made, but it won't be available for a long time because it's not ready. The chemistry has issues that need to be resolved. When they do solve the problems, it won't be just cars, trucks, jets, large boats, they'll all be electrified.

That's for a full charge, empty to full. How often do you drive anywhere close to 100 miles in a day? I just saw in another video, they found that Model S owners start off plugging their cars in every time they park in the garage. After awhile, they're plugging them in every week or so, only as often as they need to. For everyday driving, it's just not an issue.

There will be charging stations at every parking garage, school, major work place, mall, super market, furniture store, police office, restaurant, convenient store, car dealership, hotel, golf club and so on. Frankly we already have about 400 stations in the SF area and I don't think we actually need more at this point.

National price for a KW is $0.12. If there's an 85 KW battery, 85 * $0.12 = $10.2 of power for a full 0% - 100% charge. This is compared to what...? It cost me $55 to fuel my Ford. They both get about the same mileage. 4x less money for travel... not bad.

***** There's only one battery swapping station in the entire nation, they cost $1/2 Million each, each swap costs 15 gallons ($60-80) of gas equivalent, you are required to pick your original battery back up, unless you want to pay the delta in the price to buy the battery you picked up ( or pay shipping charges to get your original battery ). In all, the battery swapping infrastructure, priced currently, is more expensive then you think. If I wanted to go from SF->LA in a day, it would be impossible. The dude had to charge overnight for 11 hours. If you wanted to do a weekend trip to LA, you couldn't do that. You should get the facts straight. This is great for leisurely driving, but if you want to get places fast, forget it. Prime example: Try driving to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas in a day and back.

+BeAnBeAn22 Before you do selective reading on my comment, I said round trip, in a day. Your very own trip planner clearly shows that you would not make it from the nearest supercharger, to the Grand Canyon and back to the nearest supercharger: www.evtripplanner.com/planner/2-5/?id=g4ox So you already immediately failed your argument. ***** hey, Im all for these cars man. Just noting some issues that I foresee with the average consumer (general public),, who loves to bitch about everything. And yeah, I said that....charging overnight solves the daily driver issue fully. It's road trips, and times when you forget to charge overnight that will be a problem. "shit im late to work, need to charge my car" type of scenarios. And I agree....20-30 mins for a charge isn't bad. If you are road tripping, then you are going to stop for that long anyway. Hope it becomes a larger thing.

You could use the 240-volt outlet that runs your washing machine to run what's become the standard EV charging station (I think they cost a grand or so to install in your garage). It won't charge nearly as fast as the Tesla supercharger, but it's plenty fast for overnight.

The only issue I can see is power supply and time it takes to fill but once we have a power station on every corner like they do gas stations then your only limitation will be the time to recharge and I'm sure they will get that down as time goes on. And you know how you can get a phone cover with extra battery life?.... They already have portable power supplies/battery re chargers for camping etc. May as well make one to put in the trunk of your new Tesla.

It's actually a 10 year battery, but life expectancy is likely to exceed that. The battery cells are liquid cooled/heated, and electronically controlled. The system will not allow the pack to be over charged or fully discharged. Charging of the pack is multiphase, meaning that even though the pack may be fully charged, a significant portion of the cells are left uncharged. The cells will be charged on this "multiphase" charging schedule to preserve the pack.

I love the complaints about charge times. My car sits in my garage at night. Every single morning with my tesla I come down to a fully-charged vehicle. On trips from LA-SF I stop and charge, it's a very good 30 minute break from the car that I woulda spent any way, getting out, gassing up, using the restroom, getting snacks. There is virtually no change from driving a large luxury sedan to model S, well, except for the fact I NEVER have to plan to charge up during the week. Where with my previous Audi I had to plan on gassing up every single week.

Knowbody is mentioning that you loose time every time you need to Charge. You HAVE to wait and kill time. When you are at home driving to work and supermarket only is perfect, but taking this car for a trip is a time killer. You always have to figure out what to do while it is charging. And we are talking about 2-6 hours here. So can time it so that you charge it while you stay at a hotel. But as I said, it is time you loose you would never do otherwise. All in all, the technic is awesome!

honestly how many times do you get in your car, be in a rush to get to work and need to fill up with gas? I know I don't as I like to fill up where it's cheapest - I plan ahead, fill up on the way home etc. The big bonus with an ev though is charging at home - i mean you get used to putting your phone on charge on a night - i can't imagine a car is much more difficult to plug in
