The main reason the city doesn't seem planned well is because the city zoning ordinances were drawn up in the 40s and 50s, not expecting such a large population influx and many developments to pop up, it got to the point where zoning in the suburbs pretty much went out the window, although most businesses are along the main road corridors. Downtown Boise is alot better planned as they did major redevelopment and rezoning in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Born and raised... 58 years. I don't mind the growth as much as i hate the fact that our city allowed ALL THIS GROWTH BUT HAVE DONE VERY LITTLE TO IMPROVE OUR ROADWAYS TO ALLOW FOR THE INCREASE IN TRAFFIC. IMO... some of this road rage is due to their lack of planning. It's out of control. Example... my husband and i have been married 36+ years. The area in which he rented an apartment in the 80's (premarriage) has had zero changes yet there is no longer any vacant land south of that location. Back in the day it was the majority of available land in the area. You tell me how ANY OF THIS "PLANNING" (lack of) makes any sense. WE NEED NEW PLANNERS.😅

Hey Trent, great video man! I've lived out here in the Spokane Valley the greater of the last four decades and seen the growth in this area and can relate to many points you mentioned. Growing up the attention was towards big cities like Seattle or Portland and I never gave a place like Boise a single thought. That changed in June 2021 when I asked my wife to pick somewhere that we've never been to for her birthday. We drove down to Boise and I've been quite fascinated with this place ever since and we make an annual trip there every June to a place called Hidden Springs which is just slightly north of Eagle/Garden City. We were just down there a few weeks ago and it is so refreshing to see a vibrant city without the things we see here in Spokane now. We always find ourselves getting a rental place in The North End which everything is so convenient within walking distance (and I am a car guy). There are many great breweries here, especially one in Garden city called Barbarian. I found that Eastern Meridian reminded me a lot like of East Sprague. Lastly, getting on a EBIKE in the Greenbelt is freaking amazing and a lot of fun!

There are a lot of us in Idaho who could never stand to live in Boise. Because it is the state capitol, it is too much like California because all of the activists move there from liberal states. Somewhere around 2000 Californians move to Idaho every month and most of them are moving to the Treasure Valley. Prices for homes have tripled in the last couple of years and the local people can't afford them anymore, so there is resentment growing. Unfortunately, that farm land is where they are putting all of the new houses and the spaces between the towns are disappearing like they did in the 1970s in the Santa Clara Valley of California. With the urban areas expanding and the farming areas shrinking, it is becoming like San Jose or Los Angeles.

Boise is "Portland-East". If you're moving to Idaho for space, outdoor life, and conservative values, Boise is NOT the place to be. Boise, and most of Ada County in general, is moving more and more progressive daily. Boise and surrounding areas are nothing like they were when I was growing up. Most of it is very reminiscent of Southern California. And then you get to the downtown area of Boise itself and it's wretched. If you hate crowds and cookies cutter HOA homes stacked on top of each other, that's what the Treasure Valley is becoming. So if you're wanting to escape that, this isn't the place for it. One man's hodgepodge is another's live-work neighborhood. One man's master planned community is another's hour long commute twice a day. Master planners never seem to get it right. Like, real people actually want to be able to get our vehicles serviced less than 45 minutes away from our homes. We don't mind that auto shops don't look like art galleries. The free market might be messier in appearance, but it reflects what real people want better than the master planned stuff. Roads are a different matter, and Boise has a strong commitment to building roads only years after they had become gridlocked, and not requiring developers to build roads in return for rezoning. Thousands of houses will be built along a rough narrow old farm road with stop signs. THAT is where Boise should be a giant lesson in "what NEVER to do", to other communities. That's where planning would be good. Put in wide, safe, high speed corridors BEFORE turning farms into suburbs, not 15 years after, when there's not enough room for the roads we actually need.

Boise definitely not a massive city but I love a small/mid-sized city feel like this and could definitely raise a family here. You certainly have all the amenities you need in the valley. I’ve lived here for 2 years and don’t see myself staying here forever, I could envision myself raising a family in areas like the north end or the east side of town. They are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you taking the time to explore the treasure valley and give your honest input! Cheer!

I’m interested in moving there. I own a small business that does parking lot maintenance. Ie… pavement marking and asphalt sealing. I’m also a licensed aircraft mechanic so I think I could have work all year hopefully. Northern Idaho is really appealing. Definitely want to fly in and check it out first.

I was stationed at Mt. Home AFB, about 50 years ago. I love all of Idaho, though I spent most of my time from Boise, South. There is a clear presence of Mormon influence in everything, from city planning to decent and clean family friendly places. I am not Mormon, but reflect many of their values, especially not using drugs of alcohol. People were friendly, and girls were easy to meet. I went to church, and not to bars!!! No one preached to me, we just enjoyed each other's company. I am sorry that I did not return after my enlistment was up, but my home in Fresno, Ca. had a strong calling for me. Also, the freezing of the Snake River, in the winter of 1972/73, IIRC was another factor. The plumbing under our barracks froze up, and families that lived in town had to be hosted on base because they couldn't keep their homes heated. I get old at 40 above zero, like most of California, but I learned how to survive at 40 below zero and enjoyed it!!! But!!!, at 60 below zero, when we couldn't even launch our all-weather F-111 fighter jets, so I judged that as just too cold for me!!! LOL!!! It was warmer at our AFB's in Alaska during those cold weeks!!! Great state, Idaho. I hope to return for a visit very soon. Especially Mt. Home, and the Indian hot springs, and of course Boise!!! Tim

Tim I was also stationed at Mtn Home F-111 crew Chief . Separated in 73 moved back to the Portland area. Escaped 15 years ago and relocated to North Idaho. I haven’t been back to Mtn. Home or Boise since 73. I’ve seen videos of the town and base and it’s really changed. I was originally assigned to the 7 TRS RF-4C at Mtn. Home was there during the early F-111F days and was part of the group sent to Takhli . Returned to Mtn Home then separated. When I first got to Mtn. Home the only fast food places were the DQ and the Red Steer. Not even a pizza place. We drove to Boise on weekends and stayed at the transient barracks at Gowan Field , hung out at the park near the college, ate Brass Lamp Pizza, and McDonalds. I love North Idaho, and really don’t miss the Portland area.

Check out Hidden Springs, Idaho…3 miles north of Eagle. Plenty of shopping I n Eagle and State Street or Eagle and Glenwood, grocery stores, pet stores, Home Depot, fast food, restaurants, car wash, etc. There are a ton of neighborhood parks in all of Eagle neighborhoods. Not so much where you were looking in downtown Eagle. Garden City is rough…a few good neighborhoods, though, along the river. Traffic on 20/26 or Chinden can be a nightmare on morning/evening commutes.

Garden City is definitely being developed and in some cases overdeveloped. Just like any other city, they bulldoze old homes to make new apartments. This is great for the new people moving in out of state but awful for people who live here. I had to watch my parents home get bulldozed. I watched my home get bulldozed. It really made me realize that whenever you look at a home or an apartment complex you should wonder what was destroyed to put it there. Also, in regards to the river, not to scare anyone but we do have a lot of bodies that get pulled out of that River every year. It is a lot more dangerous than people think and certainly swifter than people think. I really recommend that if you're going to play in the river that you're a good swimmer. And never ever swim alone. On the other hand, I will say that I live a block from the river and grew up a block from this river. I do love that I'm so close to that bit of nature. I can see why anybody else would want to be there, too.

Where to begin ..first Riggins isn’t on the Snake River but the Salmon . Secondly you complained about lack of parks .. the Greenbelt runs almost 100 miles and has dozens of parks attached to it ..plus the Foothills surrounding Boise and Eagle are great for all kinds of hiking biking running ... Incidentally Middleton isn’t in Ada County . The towns you’re picking are small farm towns . Also “ Mountain Home “ ??! WTH not in Boise or Treasure Valley if I went to C’Da and just went to Kellogg you’d say i missed the area . GC is awesome incidentally on the Greenbelt . I get it you want to pimp for North Idaho but you have a poor at best understanding of the Treasure Valley . Come back and maybe actually visit places where people live . We are definitely not “spokanastan” . Save travels
@LivingLifeNorthIdaho3 жыл бұрын
Oh @mike Harrington where to begin. I said at the beginning I have only been there a handful of times and that this was my 10,000 view of the area as a visitor. I am aware that the river shot I put on the video was actually the Payette river below Mccall. I memorize the entire video before shooting and sometimes my memory blends details. I’ll get better. I also was trying to cover the Boise “area.” Sorry if mtn home doesn’t match with that in your mind but it’s in the area in my mind. One thing that my mom taught me when I wanted to criticize someone was to ask myself first; did they intentionally make a mistake and am I willing to put the work in that they did and could I do a better job? If the answer to either of those were no then her advice was to shut my pie hole. Maybe something to consider. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@tracemilburn17772 жыл бұрын
I am a bit confused by why you said you followed the Snake River. The Salmon River is in Riggins the Payette River goes south from Cascade. You most likely drove 95 to New Meadows the 55 to Boise. You would not have passed the Snake River except at Lewiston
@LivingLifeNorthIdaho2 жыл бұрын
Because when I am staring at a camera and have lights in my face my brain likes to trick me where I think one thing and say another. It happens a lot more than I'd like unfortunately. Hopefully you found the video to be good beyond my foibles?
