This is the tale of Persephone and Hades, but also about Demeter, the gods and the seasons. Told by Persephone, Demeter and Hades himself, we explore the events that lead to the relationship between Hades and Persephone forming.
Also a lesson about the seasons, and how the myths explain natural phenomena in the world.
But also about the power that worship and prayer hold...
Living Mythology is an attempt to entertain, relax and educate all in the one place. We are trying to forge narratives so that people can experience the religions and mythologies of the world as they were meant to be. Not as dry academic monoliths, but as living breathing tales and parables as experienced by the peoples who worshipped these beings, in an attempt to make sense of their own lives and the world around them.
This channel is in its infancy, so we hope to improve and develop it as we gain more experience.
All of the tales are taken from very conflicting traditions across many centuries, so there will be many a moment when decisions need to be made to create a more cohesive narrative. If we present something that seems to be in contrast to details, rest assured we have researched many forms of the traditions and come to the conclusions we have done to form the videos.
There will NEVER be total agreement on any of these narratives due to the history and differing ways they developed over the centuries.
These videos are for entertainment and an easy gateway to the subject. If you wish more academic details then please direct your attention to the wide source material and others who perform those types of academic video essays.

This is by far THE BEST and most creative interpretation I've seen of the Demeter/Persephone/Hades myth, one that artfully explores the psychological archetypes of the characters, and doesn't just flippantly repeat the stereotype of Hades as the "Bad Guy"; after all, given his family dynamics and early attachment issues, he looks like a GREAT guy, one that I can relate with and have a lot in common with, and doing an important job that SOMEBODY has to do - would you rather send your great grandma off to the care of Zeus or Poseidon?...I didn't THINK so! Hades' drawing the shortest straw is grannies' gain, be grateful. They DO need their own movie, and there are a LOT of gaps in the poems about what happens to the souls who enter the black gates of the Underworld, and what influence Persephone might have on their outcomes. After all, who was it that created the Elysian Fields and set it apart from the dull gray of the mourning meadows? Whose idea was it to reward the most heroic of mortals for three lifetimes of deeds to lift humanity from the clay that Prometheus had molded them from? And what of the other gods and their machinations that might have interplayed with this work? The earliest descriptions of the Underworld don't include the bright oasis of Elysian Fields, and Hades himself, sensitive though he be, doesn't strike me as having the eye for color (except black) - no, that shows the fingerprints of a woman's touch. I can only imagine how many hours were spent deciding on paint colors and wallpaper patterns for THAT little remodeling project, and how many trips Hades made with chariot-loads of stuff to and from the Olympian home-improvement store. Ahhh, to be a Raven high in the sky above during some of the conversations between Demeter and Persephone in her absences from the Underworld - did Hades' ears burn from his mother-in-law/sister's scathing remarks, did it sometimes ruffle his tailfeathers or cause friction and chafing? Or did Mother and Maiden spend their days together laying out the rituals and ceremonies of the Eleusinian Mystery cult that would memorialize their bond and Persephone's descent to and return from the Underworld? When the partakers of the keikios entered the Netherworld, did Persephone herself lead the tour group? And what about their involvement with other gods' cults and affairs with Men, such as the Oracles of Delphi and Orpheism (and Christianity) ? How much influence did Kore have on Hades' decision when Orpheus came pleading for the release of his lost love? And what might have transpired between the couple and Aphrodite to choose the soul who would be reborn to animate Pygmalion's handiwork and answer his prayers? What is the daily work and home life of the Lord and Queen of the Underworld like, how do they work with the other "managers" and guides like Thanatos, Hypnos, Hecatè, Hermes, Charon, the Furies, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos...? I imagine they all have very hectic schedules these days, what with the advent of mechanized warfare, man-made plagues, a spiraling mental health crisis, and other modern horrors (thanks so much Pandora, and Zeus, you vindictive A-hole), and I can only imagine they've been forced to modernize to keep up with traffic - are there self-service kiosks at the black gates now? Do the lost souls now hover around the turnstiles of Underground stations, begging for a token to take them to the next stop? Does Charon now captain the Princess Of The Styx, reborn from the iron bones of the Titanic or Lusitania or some Vietnam era troop transport "mothballed" in the Gulf of Tonkin? : "Where have all the flowers gone? Long time passing. Where have all the flowers gone? Long time ago. Where have all the flowers gone? The girls have picked them, every one... Where have all the young girls gone?... they've taken husbands, every one... Where have all the young men gone? ...they're gone to soldier, every one... Where have all the soldiers gone?...they've gone to graveyards, every one... Where have all the graveyards gone? Long time passing. Where have all the graveyards gone? Long time ago. Where have all the graveyards gone? They're covered in flowers, every one... Where have all the flowers gone?... ...When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?" -"Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" (adapted from a Ukranian folk song and popularized during the Vietnam peace movement by artists like the Kingston Trio and others, but I've forgotten the name of the artist who first re-introduced it). It seems fitting to this topic as a thread to link our modern narratives to those of our ancient past, much as this video does, so that perhaps some of us can avoid having the lessons learned from a lifetime being lost to the River Lethe as one bygone generation passes stewardship of the land of the living to the next; as all hope must be abandoned by those entering Hades and Persephone's estate, what better to do with it than invest it in those who are just beginning their tour here, with blessings for their better management. I'm looking forward to exploring more of the content here, and perhaps someday finding an epic feature-length rendition (or perhaps a trilogy, one for each of Hecatè's 3 paths) of the after-life and adventures of Hades and Persephone. This one earned a new subscriber.

I really like the portrayal of Hades wooing Persephone by showing her around his "dark, and somewhat damp kingdom" - of all the Masculine gods, I identify most with Hades and share his tendency to remain distant while also desiring to show the wonders of my domain to one who can appreciate its dark beauty (though my own is only a tiny burg on the outskirts of His, a flyspeck on the map along a seldom traveled lane on the way to Necropolis, but with hidden treasures in its own right). I'm not much for the parties and celebrations, but I do appreciate how they fit into the story and don't begrudge the mortals😉 their fun. Is this your work by any chance, or are you just another myth-nerd like me ? That's a young channel, but I saw several other titles that inspired my curiosity and a "subscribe". Great video - I remember reading about the grape of Persephone when I was younger. I think that this version gives everybody a lot more depth, especially the Goddess of Spring. I like the idea of it being her decision and the associated personal growth as opposed to just being a doe-eyed baby goddess with a touchy uncle

Demeter is the epitome of a possessive controlling mother. Her unwillingness to let her daughter go is the exact thing that drove her away. Of course, Persephone still loves her, but she longs to live her own life. And in typical possessive parent fashion, Demeter makes it everyone else's problem and refuses to relent until she gets her way. I love how you told this tale. I love the interpretation that Hades is a proud and noble king, and Persephone is his beautiful, regal and fair Queen. They have a real genuine bond, and even Demeter cannot break that. Demeter, in the myths, isn’t controlling. Her daughter was kidnapped and was greenlighted by Zeus as some arranged marriage. Neither Demeter nor Persephone had any say in arrangements. While Persephone was elevated to a King and has arguably the most stable relationship by Greek mythology standards, it costs her time and proximity to her mother.

The myth, the earliest version of it, reflects a common/well known fact in the Greek world, mothers and daughters had little to no say in who they married. The earliest version of the myth, Hades kidnapped Persephone with permission from Zeus mainly because he knew that Demeter would refuse, so he authorized her kidnapping. Demeter’s grief isn’t her punishing the world it’s her mainly feeling powerless that she couldn’t protect her daughter. Despite later reimagining, Persephone and Hades’s story isn’t a love story, it’s a kidnapping, their story in the mythos is called the ‘Rape of Persephone’. Neither Persephone and Demeter has much agency, Persephone wasn’t allowed to leave until the worried of a barren world threatened the Gods.

@kaykay8855 The word rape (harpage in Greek) in the context of ancient Greek meant the abduction or eloping of women for marriage purposes without their guardian's consent. This is where the father giving away the bride came from. He is entrusting the life and safety of his daughter to the care of another man. Persephone may or may not have had a say in it, but it is true Demeter did not. The other thing to consider is that even in the original myths, Hades and Persphone did love each other, and Hades was always faithful to her. One of the difficulties in understanding these myths is looking at them with their original social, cultural, and linguistic factors taken into consideration and leaving out modern-day vocabulary and moral standards.

So hades didn’t abduct her but help her out of the hole and take her to the underworld so she can be what she wants, but Demeter denied what she wants but to be her tool in the spring so hades freed her from her overprotective and unreasonable mother. This is very similar to my own interpretation of this story Demeter causing famen and hades being called the bad guy due to her wrath, meanwhile persephone was tired if being trapped and in love with hades. In some traditions all of the flowers of the underworld come from Persephone, peior tales actually tell of the lifelessness of the the Underworld, but once mentioned as queen the underworld became flushed with flowers that shine like jewels. Demeter was known for her beauty, once her flower taken her form aged until her return. The young goddesses, Thelxiepeia and Parthenope were given wings to become her Harpies, but were Sirens before they changed. Goddesses of water and song, but the Harpies serve as messengers and delivery of one's personal aspect, slaves of another's will. At time harbingers of the divine, the mighty of which was said to be Nike, but that honor belongs to Iris. These Sirens of Demeter are not the only Sirens, but some of the few with wings or such a role.

Its crazy how most people perceives Hades to be the villain in this story but in actuality he did as was custom at the time...he got permission from her father, his brother, Zeus to have her hand in marriage. So when he gave his blessing, Persephone was HIS property now.

When I was a kid like you always saw the personification of Hades to be kind of a Satan character but getting older and realizing that all of those early stories where it was like Zeus and Hera having this perfect relationship was actually not really accurate but then you look at the Hades and Persephone and you can look at it in one way with like this story where Persephone had a mind and intelligence and was able to make decisions for herself in Hades was you know trying to woo a woman by asking his brother for help there's only ever been two people that Hades ever like did anything really bad dude and those guys were trying to come steal his wife . I said it before and I'll say it again when my children are old enough that I want to introduce them to the Greek mythologies these stories living mythology is the way I'm going to do it

I am so happy you liked our version of the story - as you said - it's not hera and Zeus that have a good relationship, in the myths its Persephone and Hades that don't cheat on each other. And wow - that's incredibly high praise, to be a child's first introduction to myths ! Show them the old myths when they're old enough too, but I hope we can inspire some passion for gods and legends!!! - Lightbringer
