We ate a lot of beans and homemade bread growing up. Elbow maccaroni, potatoes in various form. Sometimes we would have hamburger or roast with mashed potatoes and gravy. We were really living when we got meat. We were very poor but my mom was a magician and always fed us something.

Not packing your lunch and going out to eat every day is about going with the crowd and peer pressure to be lazy or trying to appear to have the money to make themselves look wealthier than they really are because that is their value system in their head. I love your blunt honesty about the issue in budgets.

I've stuck to a grocery budget for 50 years now in lean times and prosperous times. It drives me crazy when my grown kids don't have a budget and complain about not having enough money...(and they make really good money)! My daughter and her husband work from home and she orders delivery for lunch then complains she doesn't have money to buy herself anything! OMG!!! Many people live to eat instead of eating to live....

People are entitled these days or just plain spoiled. We deserve what we want. This country needs to change our mindset. Keep telling the truth. Love you and your channel. Keep up the good work. We just pray and the LORD directs our path. We are on a fixed income I pay our 4 bills 3 months ahead of time. Burn wood for heat. Our pantry is stocked up for long term. Once the rapture happens someone will have enough food for a long time and a BIBLE left on the desk.

Part, not all, of the problem is that parents don't want to see their children struggle. (Struggling is not the same as suffering.) I can remember what a struggle it was to make ends meet back when hubby and I were newlyweds and what a bonding experience that was for us. We did it, we got through it, and we did it together. Nowadays, parents buy fancy houses for their kids, new cars, ad on, because they can't stand to see the struggle. Struggling is a real strengthening experience. Without it, things can easily run amok which is part of what we're seeing in today's society.

Tawra, I had a banker tell me once that your bills should only be 25% of your income. Most people’s is 80-90% because we want it ALL. We don’t need most of the things we think we do.

My husband retired about four years ago and the guys like to tease him a little because he always took a lunch from home. After the kids grew up and got married I continued to make the same amount of food so all I had to do was load up a few of his vintage pyrex, rectangular oven dishes and stick them in the fridge and he was set for most of the week. Mighty cheap eating.

Hi, you are not being harsh. I take breakfast and lunch to work, prepare meals from my stockpile and eat leftovers. My family and I do go out on special occasions, order out once in a while, shop the sales and stockpile. Have been doing this since getting married. Learned these money savings skills from my parents and grandparents. Thanks for all your help.

What I see is that a lot of people are following an old practice of writing a meal plan then going grocery shopping with a list which provides the required ingredients. It seems as if a lot of folks are considering out of season fruit, 10 oz of morning orange juice (old school portion was 4oz), plenty of bacon, plenty of hamburger, and more to be minimum requirements for a healthy diet. Few folks are wearing a heavy bathrobe, sweater or sweater vest, socks and slippers, and considering 68 to 70 degrees the top temp in the center rooms of a house. The list goes on. Rather than cut the grocery budget and pay down on debt, people are placing extra debt payments at the end of the list.

My cat passed away recently. Within a few weeks of her passing I found I wanted to get another animal. I decided not to because of my limited income and not being able to afford vet bills or other items that the animal might need I think it would be irresponsible of me to have a pet that I cannot financially afford.

@@edithjohnson6835, YUCK! My mother ALWAYS bought grape jelly & grape Kool-Aid only bc it was my oldest brother's favorite, even though all the rest of us hated it; I've hated grape-tasting crap my whole life, unless it's real grapes! I do recall though many 'wish sandwiches' that consisted of two slices of bread and wishin' we had something to put between them! Seriously. We were migrants, moved 5-7 times every year and worked in the fields, orchards and vineyards - you know, those 'jobs Americans won't do' right??

I’ve noticed here in Germany, that the rare time we eat out vegetables are never in the menu as a side dish or part of the meal. It’s mainly meat that is fried as a Schnitzel with fries, or an abundance of other goodies. Good plain steamed vegetables are never on a menu and I’ve looked at a lot of menus that are outside these restaurants. Great content as always, thank you so much 😊.

When created Minimum wage it was enough to live on. Senator Elizabeth warren stated the cost of going to $15/hour would increase the cost of her $8 salad for $8.15. Wages for the big managers and greed. The cost of eggs was artificially inflated last year because the big corporations shipped the sold them out of the country. For inflation adjustment Minimum wage should be over $23 dollars.
@americanviewpoint
@americanviewpoint 9 ай бұрын
In reality. ... higher wages only drive up cost of living for everyone and then you spend that increased wage on those costs but the people that were already earning at that wage just lost buying power. and economy suffers because now you still have no buying power but they too have no buying power so economy. Suffers which in turn raised costs even more because co will ensure they don't t lose on profits learning to adapt in spite of economic increases will enhance your buying power not more and more $ money is just one tool in the box if you don't t have a hammer and don't have a hammer to drive a nail- what do do? not trying to be non empathetic, ❤ I know @63 that if you adapt to this way of looking at money a bettér situation is possible😊

It makes me SO ANGRY when I hear people say that they are getting this free and that free! Who do they think is paying for this?? we are with our taxes. I packed my husbands lunch and my kids lunch for school for almost 40 years! ( yes , sometimes he bought at work if I didn't feel well or there just wasn't anything good to make, and sometimes the kids bought their lunch if it was their favorite. Like Mashed potato day) but most of the time they took their lunch from home. In fact my husband told me once that the guys at work were jealous of his lunches, because he always had something homemade in it. Bye the way, I hate the taste of Starbucks! also, so sorry to hear about your family problems. Hope your kids start feeling better, prayers for your family and for your Uncle..

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Excellent video! You are so right. People are so incredibly entitled. We do buy things we want, but we have no debt. We paid off our house over a year ago. I’ve the past few months I’ve cracked down harder on how I’m shopping, and we are easily sticking within our budget, even with inflation. I buy only very few items not on sale because they don’t go on sale here. And I’m with Mike… this is only the beginning of the beginning. Maranatha!!

My husband and I went to eat lunch at Burger King, one small chicken sandwich meal, one small burger meal. I got $2.00 and small change back, from $20:00 bill, hardly any fries. We are not doing that again! I will stop at gas station and get a soda to tie me over until I can get home! My husband won’t let me make sandwiches to take with us! I need to just make sandwich for myself. Yes, we are old and we don’t have debt and we can afford to eat out. However, it is the principle involved. I’ve always been frugal from day one. I have to agree, certain products taste better than others. Spices can make anything taste better.

I have actually seen a few basic food items come down in price in the last little while. The 900g store brand cheese was $7 in 2019, went up to $9.89 in the next year, now it is back to $7.89. Lots of things are still higher, there are some things that I've simply stopped buying. I live in Canada by the way. 4 kids, we homeschool, so we live on one income. I pack a lunch for my husband every morning, I cook at home every day. My kids don't even like store bought pizza, or pies, they say the ones I make are better.

I have people in my own life who suffer from a victim mentality with finances and other things. As a Christian, I try not to mock someone or laugh at them in their suffering in financial struggles, even if they have the wrong attitude. Just saying as a long time viewer maybe minimum wage is going up but I’m making the same exact amount I was in 2019. I’m in a specific licensed healthcare role and it’s not a matter of finding another employer, it’s a matter of healthcare payment terms set by Medicare and greedy corporate healthcare. No clue when I will ever see a cost of living increase, just signed a new agreement our company is being bought out and it’s the exact same wage. I’m honestly thinking of leaving healthcare, maybe I could be an electrician or plumber or something like that protected by a union and wage negotiations.

Many construction workers are not local. They live in motels going from town to state. This includes working on highways and bridges, utilities, and buildings. They only have a short time for lunch .That is different from living in the same town. 😮 motels sometimes, microwaves and coffee pots , maybe a student refrigerator. Most of the work skills labors are under contractors. Because of folks losing their houses, most of the motels with kitchenettes are occupied by people with families living in them. The schools have vans to pickup the students to take them to school..

Having one or two inexpensive items you have rarely were you prefer a specific brand won't break your budget. It's when it's expensive items and a lot of them. My husband prefers Hellmann's mayo. I used to be able to get it for less than $2 a jar, now it's $4 on the best sale I can find. We are using other brands now because it was already pricey.

I have never considered myself a victim., of anything, let alone what I choose to eat. Even when I needed to use the food pantries, (I stopped going last August). I figured that I am not in "shock" anymore about my poverty situation, and I am smart enough to figure out how to get out of this, all by myself. If it means eating beans and rice once or twice a week, and peanut butter sandwiches a few times a week for both breakfast and lunch, I can do this. And as I pull myself back up again, I still look for the least expensive options, and see if they are right for me, or if I have to save up somehow to afford the next level option and see if it is right for me. Just like Dawn dish detergent is my "gold standard", first I am willing to try your "gold standard of "Walmart Blue" dish detergent to see if it meets my standards. I won't be missing a meal to do this comparison either. I will continue to eat the inexpensive vegetables, (you should do a show on them), and be able to afford dish detergent. I won't be eating asparagus, or hoity-toity red, or savoy cabbage or bok choy (unless I grow it myself). If the cost of mushrooms is too high one week, they don't come home with me - I will either leave them out of a recipe or make a different recipe! It's as simple as that. I don't get that people don't get that. Lunches at school - we always took lunch, never bought at school, some years there were "snacks" that could be bought off a cart that was brought around, but with 6 kids in school (1 cousin was out of school and working), it was just too expensive, so we had to pass. But hear this - my father, and his siblings (6 kids) all took hot baked potatoes for their lunches. They put them in their coat pockets to keep themselves warm on their long walk to school. This was in the days when if you lived with a 3 mile radius of the school you had to get yourself there. I remember whining that we had to walk 1 1/2 to school, on sunny days, and my aunt would take us on rainy days. Lunches at work - I went for years never buying my lunch - a peanut butter and butter (not margarine because I will skip something else to have butter), sandwich was fine, with homemade iced tea in a thermos. Sometimes I could afford an apple a day for a whole week with my sandwiches, now that was a treat.

I am in my late 60’s and have multiple sclerosis (along with fibromyalgia). A gentleman from the Nebraska economic association couldn’t understand how I “can possibly be eating” on my income. In response, I was puzzled. Because? I simply follow the advice given to me by my frugal mother (which is exactly what your videos teach). Must be a Midwestern thing…? 🤔

When I worked as a social worker, most of us would bring small crockpots for lunch and sit them on our desks all day. We always had amazing food and it was fun!

This is amazing! Love that. Maybe I should get my husband a little crockpot for work. He ends up buying cans of Chili beans or tuna for lunch most days. He is super frugal and waits til he finds a good deal. His goal was always $1 or less for his lunches.

I have to wait a day to watch because captions aren't generated right away. I wanted to tell Jill that I watched Cinderella Man after she mentioned it and it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. I also watched The Cinderella Man which is real footage of James Braddock including the fight for the Title. Another movie that I thank Jill for is Cool Runnnings that I watched after she mentioned it. Thank you, Jill and thank you, Mike and Taura for everything.
