I traveled a month in Europe this summer, watched some of my fellow travelers suffer and pass on activities and excursions, came home and booked my knee replacement surgery. I am 62 and have had issues a couple years and didn’t want to wait so long I was missing out. Had my knee done TODAY!

Nancy, bless you. I am 67 … 68 in February 8 days before my second total knee replacement ♥️🎉 I’ve struggled for years, and the knee injections until my right knee just was so painful. I’m almost 8 weeks post surgery & doing so great. I was having very little issue with my left knee until my right knee was straight and operating well. Then…. Looking forward to being where I am now with my left knee. We’re cruising in January, or I would schedule my left knee sooner. I highly recommend pre surgery PT. I requested it & it was an amazing help. My PTs got my leg moving better and put me in better shape for post surgery. It’s definitely a deal, but so far I have to say I only regret that I didn’t do it sooner. It’s so odd to only experience a little post surgery ache from time to time instead of the constant arthritis issues. You will know when you are ready to do this. Praying for your continued good health.

You two are so cute and after following your cruise I feel like family ! My husband is a CRNA/ Ironman and I am a retired RN m. We spend months traveling the world but at 71 I have those same knee and hip pain and have been offered surgeries. When I watch your videos I’d think Nancy and I walk with the same pain gait ( Mike -quit filming Nancy climbing stairs from behind!). At the pace we travel it is hard to rebound the short few weeks to exercise, get medical appointments and see grandkids. So when someone tells me how lucky I to travel I do have to be mindful of that privilege but boy, it’s hard to keep up with my husband ! Btw today we are spending 12 hours at the Qatar airport - slept in the pod rooms and then used the awesome spa with the best pool for laps and facial treatment - heaven. I wish you the best and can’t wait to see your next adventure!

Ms. Nancy, get the knee replacement! It will help all the other problems. No need to live in pain any longer. At 51 years old, I've had both replaced and it has changed my life and wellbeing! Kept getting told I was too young for knee replacement, but I was definitely too young to be in pain every day and not able to walk/move as I should. Most people who have went ahead and had knee replacement (and did the proper therapy post-op) will tell you it is more than worth it! Thanks for all the great content! God Bless!

Happy to hear that your tumor was benign. Thank you for sharing your story, as your advice helps all of us. I am a nurse, and proud you are so proactive in taking care of yourself. My husband , who was 60, had both knees replaced at the same time 20 years ago and did very well. He said the pain from the surgery was less than the pain he was suffering with prior to surgery! Best of luck…🙏🏻🙏🏻

My 63 yr old brother was concerned about his health. He was over weight and had a hard time getting up and down off the floor. He changed his diet and also hired a personal trainer. Regaining muscle is slow but one day he was on the floor - and just stood up with ease. It surprised him. Keep at it! You’ll get there.

You make it so real, like a good neighbor. I’m 71 and fighting artritis around my right hip. I use creams take some Alleve but the best thing is I brought a scooter to get around. Takes the worry out of how far is it? Can I rest along the way? Sending healing thoughts and a recommendation get the knee done. If there was surgury for what I have I’d gladly do it just to relieve the unbearable pain.

I must say that I've watched a lot of your videos when planning our long trip. I truly love how you are always positive, upbeat and your love and support for each other is so evident! So glad Nancy's Orthopedic issues are resolving some! As a former Physical Therapist, I must say that weight gain and lack of strengthening can cause joint pain. Seniors need to stay active and women especially need strength training in addition to aerobic exercise. A good Physical Therapist can help design a program for you. We have been gone for 2 months and my husband & I are trying hard to stay the same weight-so far, so good, but it's tough. Alcohol is "empty calories" and breads & desserts are tempting. There is a weight scale for travel-our daughter in-law got one for my husband and it's smaller than a computer, flat and only weighed 1.25#-that's helped us stay on track and skip a few meals!

Thank goodness you are okay. Many of us including myself have had one or two of those “we see something” in xray. Nancy, I also suffer from degenerative disc disease. I had my first fusion surgery at age 40 and my second at 57. My entire neck required fusion and I waited too long on the second surgery and so I now have permanent nerve damage to my right hand. Recently gained weight and it is also causing knee and hip pain. I am also doing my best to drop the lbs to remedy this. I am 61. I use a recumbent stationary bicycle, lift free weights to strengthen and do yoga to stretch. I lived in nyc so walking was 2nd nature but once I moved to Connecticut it was all about driving. Love all your posts - very informative and inspiring.

Thank you for the update regarding your health. I am so glad that that leg tumor is benign! How scary! I am 71 and my knees started bothering me in my early 60s. Like you, mine are both bone on bone with no cartilage. Sometimes the arthritis pain is uncomfortable and sometimes it’s tolerable. Stairs are a big problem. I have had 2 sets of shots in about 10 years and they last for a few months and wear off. I am still putting off surgery for as long as possible and am trying to lose weight as well. You have both lost so much weight since you’ve returned which is terrific. To me, it looked as if you lost weight as the trip went on. And you did miles and miles of walking and hiking. I suppose as we age, our metabolism slows to a crawl….it’s so discouraging! It’s good to know that your health is a priority which will enable you both to safely sail away on your cruise to Egypt. Stay well and thank you!🍁🍂🦃

I am still, 5 years later, so happy that I did my partial knee replacement (@65). If you wait too long you'll have to have a total knee replacement, much more complicated and painful. My partial was so smooth, I didn't even have to take more than over the counter pain killers, 6 weeks of PT and life was painfree again. And, the longer the knee is giving you trouble, the more your other joints are compromised. Talk to Ortho about the difference between full and partial. If you're bone on bone it won't ever get better on its own and repair gets more complicated too. Good luck ... give yourself grace to make yourself as good as you can be.

After being literally in your situation w bone on bone bilat knees, I strongly recommend you do at least 1 knee sooner than later! Don't do both at the same time - very difficult recovery! I was so sorry that I waited! You're not getting younger, your knees are destroying each other w all the stress and additional compensation, and you're in pain! That wears on you. Also, heaven forbid, anything else pops up! (Like a fall, heart attack...) I'm an RN BSN and have played as hard as I worked ( 12 hr NICU shifts, snow skied and ran miles for fun!). Both parents had bilat knee replacements too. So my poor knees were destined for nec repairs at some point. I had several arthroscopic surgeries to try to repair a torn meniscus and cartilage chips. Bought me some time. But no cure! Definitely go hard on your post surg PT. That's what saves you. It's not fun - esp w your back - but so worth it. Thanks to my rt knee replacement, my left has actually been better despite still being bone on bone! Alieve w tylenol is holding it! Great idea to lose the weight, esp before surgery as you know. So very helpful but so very hard! Congratulations! Good luck to you both.

My husband did his in 2021 at 60. He had bone on bone. His biggest take away was to do all the exercises they give prior to surgery . The first 3 days were the hardest. After that the recovery was easy and PT was a huge help along with the ice pack recommended by the PT. Good luck with all decisions you make.

@@siouxzqtoday I have to admit, I didn’t do any exercise before but I still had the same experience with recovery. Once the swelling was gone so was most of the pain from surgery.

I’ve suffered from my back having been in nursing all my working life …I turned 60 this year !! I do Aqua biking once a week & also Aqua Jogging ( you wear a floater belt and you literally run in the water ..you can do at you own pace) It’s amazing and keeps your ‘corp ‘ strength up ⬆️!! Take care of yourself & enjoy your travels ❤❤❤

Mike said it well, I am happy it’s getting sorted. I did some strengthening with Pilates for dummies, it was on KZbin and I bought the dvd. It helped a lot! And was easy on my weak knees! Good luck for your recovery and can’t wait to see the rest of the trips you take!

Hello Nancy first of all I would like to say I don't know how you managed to get through the last part of you cruise with the pain you were going through. I went on a cruise waiting for my 2nd knee replacement and it was not easy even taking advantage of all the assistance available. I would just like to say go ahead with your knee replacement as soon as you feel you want to it will change your life. You are obviously an active person so your fitness definately would aid recovery. I had the injections to ease the discomfort before I had the operations they helped but in the end you still have to go ahead with the knee replacements. My recovery was 3/4 months but everyone is different the fitter you are the better it is. I think the difficulty seems to be for you is taking the time off. What I think is amazing you seem to just get on with life pain or no pain. Unfortunately after having my knee replacements which were amazing I am now waiting for a new hip I soon hope to be sorted at the beginning of next year and hoping for good things to come. So I would say go for it as soon as you can and you will be running around with your lovely grandchildren pain free. I know many people who have had the two together but that's hard not sure I would advice it. Hope this helps will certainly carry watching your videos.

Thank you so much for your encouragement and thank you for sharing your story with me. It’s hard for me to think of getting a knee replacement when walking is not the issue. It’s stairs and getting up and down from a seated position.😬

I was recently diagnosed with knee arthritis so have been dealing with much of this myself. I am not bone on bone yet but he said I will likely need both knees replaced eventually. Right now treating mostly with physical therapy and pain medication. You are right that getting old is not for the weak. But it definitely beats not getting old! Best wishes for your health journey.

It is wonderful that you are getting quality care. Exercise and weight loss is key to so much when you are aging. My husband is 70 with a bad back and surgery is now the only solution. I want to travel more, but at present, he is just not able to roam the ports like I want to.

My gosh I’m so glad things have turned out ok. Look into a neuro massage therapist. I was having hip pain (different from yours but I truly believe it’ll help) and I went to a neuro massage therapist and he fixed it. My body was out of sync. He’s helped my shoulder which I had surgery on, my knee, and he’s helped my husband’s knee which is really bad. They’re very educated and know every muscle in the body (they’re nothing like a massage therapist). Also, try some strength training exercises, even if it’s one pound weights. It will help you! Much love to you both! ❤

Great news! When you are ready have your knees replaced. I know people who have done them one at the time and now in their 80’s and have no regrets and are doing just fine. The trick is to know that you need six months to totally recover from knee surgery. So do one then the following year a second one. You are very active and that is what counts for recovery. 😊😊😊
