Not only in New York, but all over the would. Even psychiatrist don’t take you seriously. My psychiatrist told me “ How could you manage to learn 5 foreign languages”? How can you concentrate at school with adhd+ schizoaffective disorder”. You are lucky if you can see your psychiatrist twice a month. I visit my psychiatrist 3 times per year.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia 20 years ago. Ever since then I have been denied health insurance due to my preexisting condition so i have not been able to afford medication and i have refused to take medication. I am now able to control my voices and noises. My cognitive abilities have not declined but in fact have increased.

Right!!.. But that's one thing that I have an issue with, is smdoing my weird episodes out in public but I absolutely CANNOT help it, and it's REALLY really hard to try n hide it! I want to thank you all for sharing your truth. It made me cry a lot. My name Laura, I am 54 years old. My mother suffered terribly from schizophrenia, all of my life. When I was 26 , she left to be with God. Nothing has come close to the pain I had from losing her. She was the kindest, most loving human being I have ever known. Her heart was pure love & she was afflicted with a terrible disease. Seeing all of you share your selves makes me so happy to know how far medicine has come. You are all so beautiful & full of light & love. I know my Mom is smiling upon all of you. I know she sent me my beautiful children because she is my forever Angel. I really wish that others know that people living with schizophrenia are more than capable of doing great things in life as advocates of their own cause. My love of art and activism only strengthened me hundredfold after my diagnosis because all along those two things I had incorporated in my life worked for me rather than against me. My friends and family had treated me no different after that, and I love them just as much for it. We're more than our hallucinations. We are all human, first and foremost. Look out for each other, don't tear each other down. This is a quote I set for myself and others who are battling this brain disorder: "You're a victor to the cause, NOT the victim!" God lets us experience things like this to make us stronger. Medication is what has taken the voices away for me. Just wanna say a bit about productivity being a part of stigma. I get what the core of the sentiment is (trying to get rid of stereotype and stigma) but “that homeless person” with schizophrenia has been failed by the system and is a very real consequence of determining someone’s worth based on how well they can participate in “productive” society. People with psychosis who don’t/never had a safety net (money, insurance, family, etc.) are very likely to end up homeless and without support through absolutely no fault of their own. Lets view them as a part of the community rather than a stereotype to avoid. No one is free till we’re all free.

💗 Yes to this. Someone close to me was diagnosed with schizophrenia about a year and a half ago now, and at the first visit to the psychiatrist after a hospitalization, the psychiatrist was quick to mention how important a good support system is, outside of treatment. Someone who does not have that, through no fault of their own, is more likely to struggle and fall under the stereotypes of how the disorder can look. And society needs to shift to understand that, for the most part, the stereotypes are fed by the feedback loop created by the system, lack of funding and resources for mental health, shortages of beds for people in crises, low pay for people who have a desire to work in Mental health on the ground floor level- making burn out and turnover a real problem that impacts needed care meant to improve outcomes, among other things.

That idea that people with schizophrenia are first and foremost 'people' has reverberated with me almost from the very start of my professional career. Every person with schizophrenia I've met has had a different personality: some lovable, some not so much but that's ok, it's just like everyone else in the world. It breaks my heart sometimes to see how much schizophrenia has taken away from the wonderful person that used to be in there.

If the message by the people here is to get society to be less judgmental, then they have to lead by example and not "other" those who they believe are beneath them. The categorisation of good/positive vs bad/negative schizophrenics is no different to India's caste system. I'm subscribed to this channel as I've been diagnosed with having schizophrenia and sectioned a bunch of times, on anti-psychotics etc, but sometimes this channel makes it clear that only certain people with schizophrenia are/should be valued, which is fine, but anyone who's not a "good" schizophrenic and watches this is just gonna feel further ostracised.

However, I am intrigued by your moniker and have a question for you, and it's really semantics, but a conversation came up once with my psychiatrist and he told me that you can't use the term "schizophrenic" and must say "person with schizophrenia" instead. I noticed also that the second part of your moniker indicates you're American, I'm from the UK and it could just be a "tomarto"/tomato culture difference. Who's right and who's wrong on this topic?

Rich Barrett the point of this video, and this channel, is not to make certain people with schizophrenia look "good" or "bad." There is no such thing. The point is to normalize it somewhat and give a voice to the people who are still living relatively normal lives and look "normal" on the outside. We are underrepresented in media and in any educational content about the disorder. Even though it may not be politically correct to say it, the fact is, not everyone with schizophrenia talks to themselves in public and looks visibly mentally ill. Not everyone shows their symptoms on the outside. Some people still hold down jobs, even full time. Many people with the disorder look, speak, and act "normal," whether that's from successful medication treatment or just the way the person is. As one such patient myself, I am thrilled to finally see a channel that represents people like me.

I have Paranoid Schizophrenia, and people always called me the R-Word and many other rude name calling towards me, and this has been ever since middle school up to HS and even way after I got out of school and started working, and out of ALL my jobs people ALWAYS always always made fun of me and talked crap about me, all my co-workers would talk about me amongst eachother and laugh about me out loud, even l laughed in my face! And it sucks.. I'm currently trying to find the right medication(s) to help me cool my mood and hilucinstions down, because I also talk to myself and to my mother out loud or even to things that are apparently not there but I literally see them floating infront of me sometimes and they laugh or talk to me and tell me to do things, sometimes tells me to do things I shouldnt do, and it's like these weird faces that will literally just frickin float infront of me telling me things and start laughing/giggling, yeah, I know, I'm crazy, it's crazy, it's insane!!... But anyways, I also have other mental health issues such as ADD, MDD, and PTSD. And I've had that since I was 16 and literally seen my mother dying infront of me and I think about it literally almost every single day and night from the time I wake up till sleep time, I'll literally relive that moment over n over in my head and sometimes I'll even start crying out of nowhere because of these thoughts... Etc.. Etc.. But anyways lol uhnnn, yeah, so I'm currently trying to find these videos on schizophrenic people and see how they deal with their schizo episodes and what medications they're on to better help myself!! So thanks for these videos, I'm learning more n more!! Thank you!! 😊😊

I am a recovered schizophrenic who was diagnosed back in 1990/1991 and haven’t been on any meds since 1992/1993. I spent 4 weeks in a psych ward, underwent ECT, and had the whole gamut of very strong intrusive negative thoughts and voices and an intense hallucination…a snake-like creature with a lion-like head came out of a portal and entered my room through a cloud. At the time I had no knowledge of Gnosticism, but they refer to this entity as Yaldabaoth among other names. I truly believe schizophrenia is a shamanic/spiritual experience in which some surpass and others do not. Today, I live a successful, productive and fruitful life employed as a mechanical engineer.

Im able to create music in my mind. Usually im able to dismiss the negative conversation going on my head that my voices constantly rant on about but when it becomes annoying or i just want peace and quiet i have the ability to shut them down and im able to concentrate. I have been suffering from intense migraine headaches for years and i have learned how to completely eradicate the pain. For some reason I don't feel fear as most do but instead i get focused and become intuitive. Depression is still a big factor but if im being honest its because of the lack of health insurance which is mandatory for me to get work and maintain myself. The feeling of being a burden to my family is sometimes overwhelming so i find myself feeling depressed for months on end. Im working on a solution to my depression.

There is only One Mediator between God and man, The Man Christ Jesus Who gave His life a ransom for many. And as many as received Him, as many as believed in His Name, to them He gave the right to become the children of God. Now, you and I are sinners. Christ died for my sins. I pray that someone out there can relate to and possibly have a solution to my dilemma. I live in fear of having either a panic attack or a psychotic episode. I fear this so much that I avoid almost any interactions with other people (including my children), lost my job, can’t muster the courage to interview for a new job, and living on the verge of homelessness. I’m not schizo but I have these things called dissociation and depersonalization which sounds pretty close to what you described and honestly, just knowing that you questioning your sanity means that you’re not psychotic because people with psychosis and schizophrenia find it hard to differentiate between what’s real and what isn’t. My only advice is, don’t dwell on those ‘crazy’ thoughts too much because you definitely aren’t crazy nor going crazy.

Yeah I am diagnosed with schizophrenia and I've been homeless about 2 years. I still remember my skills from when I got my masters degree in counseling pre diagnosis. So I use those skills to help others homeless people with theraputically informed conversations. I don't charge money, as that would be practicing without a liscense. I'm functioning the best I have in years, but I've been that person on the streets talking to herself. When diagnosed, my iq seems to drop. I tested it recently, and the Mensa test puts me at iq of 107 now. Of course, once a member, always a nemver effectively. So this month I rejoined mensa and now I'm an average iq person in the smarty pants club. 20% of us are employed. 25% fully recovered within 10 years. 10% are dead within 10 years. We are statistically more likely to be the victim of violent than become violent towards others. I think I'm one of the 25% and will get off the street someday, at least temporarily.

I don’t like the first lady that talked about the topic: although I agree that people absolutely should know more about the condition, I don’t like that she went to say “don’t associate us (people with schizophrenia) with those filthy homeless people who get drunk and scream at the metro station! We’re more normal than them”, obviously this is not what she said, but it’s what she basically implied, but the reality is that those homeless people on the station are not that different from you, as a matter of fact they’re not that different from anyone of us: they’re humans, and they don’t deserve any less care than you do, only because they’re homeless…

I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia 30 years ago. I work full time do well at work and take my meds. I am a very good bodybuilder and poet. I don't make a lot of money at work cigarettes cost too much and I have a problem with gambling and live with my abusive elderly mother many times I feel like giving up so I try and pray for god s help

Long story short, I'm trying to research all about schizophrenia because my dad has it. I hadn't talked to him since I was 7, I am 20 now. If you don't have medication, can you become lost or drowned in symptoms? Because I have been writing and writing him, trying to get on his list so I can visit. The prison said he was in the psychiatric part of the prison. Do they not give medications in prison?

You got more potential than my dad said so. Most likely, you are smarter than him too. My dad called me sexy a lot and that’s not a delusion. My dad didn’t have many compassion. I wish people knew that we didn’t need people thinking that we all need to live in a mental institution or be tied down to a bed. I talk to myself, but that’s a different disorder. Dissociative disorder. I don’t hear voices much or see stuff that aren’t there.

@@strange_okapi892 I had a boyfriend who has it so I tried to learn as much as I could while I was with him, this is what I learned, sometimes people with schizophrenia have anosognosia, which means they are unaware they are behaving in ways that might be deemed socially inappropriate. I’ve heard that sometimes they will think they don’t need their medication suddenly even if they previously understood that it helped them

Please do not take from this video that there're any positives about having Schizphrenia. As Stanford professor Robert Sapolsky put it "There are no hidden blessings with schizophrenia." It is one of life's cruelest illnesses.
