Center consoles with open bows and high gunnels like that Scout in the beginning, can fill with lots of water very fast and take a long time to drain.

I really like the Boston Whaler boats. I am thinking of getting one. It is the perfect boat for a bachelor. I also like the hull/bow design. Almost unsinkable.

Not completely true, I sunk one once. A guy tied up along side of our tug to come aboard and talk about our next move and he had tied stern first to the direction I was headed in. As I got underway to move out of the channel I realized that the boat had disappeared. It had submerged and was 4 feet under water. I stopped ( naturally) and it popped up like a cork. We all made mistakes and he was in a blind position to my bride. We never did THAT one again 🥹

There appears to be an extreme dearth of prudent operators and competent captains at Haulover. That explains the heavy presence and variety of rescue craft on this day. Boneheaded boaters outnumbered the the professionals by the thousands. It's a wonder more don't die at Haulover. The magnitude of the idiocy is astonishing.

Weight forward doesn't just keep the bow down low but people on the bow in rough seas is asking for an injury or even someone to be thrown overboard probably bouncing off the side on the way. The bow of the boat is the toughest place to be in rough waters. Any captain worth his salt would not allow people to ride in the bow in rough seas. Not only was I born on an island I used to live on a sailboat year-round for years and worked for a company on the docks, as a jet ski-paddleboard and kayak tour guide and went out on dive snorkel sunset and para-sail cruises. Simply put the ocean was my life and I was on it 24-7 365, except to get groceries and a few other times, every single day for years.

Wearing a life jacket is mandatory crossing a bar/inlet here in Australia. Kids under a certain age it is mandatory at all times, surprised the lack of life jackets crossing this inlet.

Oh!!! I have a guess about the malfunctioning engine. Old fuel tank had gunk stirred up by heavy sea state and pow, gunk in the fuel filter and engine won't go. Happens in sail boats leading to tight sphincters in rough water.

The easy answer to allowing jet skis in areas like Haulover is to charge heavily.for rescues and recoveries. Then they are free to pay their way.

Whereas it’s a bad idea to jet ski in a busy corridor, free will still needs respecting. Bigger boat owners seem to think they have more free will than those on a jet ski. Does size matter? Just if you get stuck in front of a huge boat and ground into chum. ..

Been on the water both professionally and personally for over 45 years. Sadly, I only witnessed a hand full of responsible boaters, regardless of the size of the vessel and including many LEO's. Too much wanting to be the center of attention and not caring about the safety of their passengers, their boats or the people around them.

The Jet Skis compound the natural congestion found at outlets/inlets. Because they are small they can sometimes be very hard to see and cause hazards that are dangerous to other boaters. Skis are more apt to be traveling irregular patterns at various speeds which also hampers the vision of boaters who are scanning the scene for other boaters coupled with the undetermined movements that skis regularly operate to catch large waves and wake. If two or more skis are active in the same area the hazard they create increases exponentially the responsibility for captains of larger craft to keep an eye on all of them to avoid a collision which compromises everyone’s safety. I’m surprised skis aren’t prohibited in these areas of congestion where there is no speed limit. Does the law of “basic rule” apply in areas where there aren’t any speed limits?

Should the Jet Skis be banned from the outlet during bad weather? I get it, that the taxes pay for "the cool kids (fire and EMS) to rescue the people that end up in the water. The thing is, as a Supervisor of a T.A.C. Hospital E.R. for years; I know; there's never enough tax dollars to replace someone that dies. There is also no way to recover what is lost by someone that loses their mobility to paralysis or loss of limbs. These are all very much possibilities when a collision occurs between a body and a boat or Jet Ski. The thing is too, while the operator/passenger may believe "the risk is worth the rewards"; consider the loss your loved ones will experience, consider the long lasting effects caused to the people that collide with and kill or severely injured you; because they could not see you in the waves. Safety isn't just for the one "on the ride'; the practices save everyone from unnecessary distress and loss.
