However, Sunak as chancellor left the country with a £30 billion treasury surplus and by the time Liz Truss left office it was gone, while the new chancellor was instructed to find tax rises and spending cuts of £50 billion. So yes, she cost the country £30 billion.

At the 2019 HowTheLightGetsIn Festival at Hay-on-Wye I saw Liz Truss speak on a discussion panel along with former Home Secretary David Blunkett, former LibDem leader Sir Vince Cable and former MI6 chief Sir John Sawers... I can't quite remember what the topic was exactly, something to do with Ai or the Tinterweb or something, but the thing I do distinctly remember, the thing that really struck me at the time as I sat there in that marquee watching & listening, is how utterly dull and lacklustre (and somewhat smug) she was. Rather like a limp iceberg lettuce. And to think of all that has happened since then 🤦‍♂
