OH OH OH PUFFFFFFINS!!!! What a wonderful surprise! Wasn't expecting that in the video. Thank you! I adore puffins soooo much! I was hoping to visit Skomer again this year, however too busy with work, the bee's and the growing. Maybe next year. Thanks so much for this delightful video addition!

I have the worst luck with carrots. What I find so funny is that Queen Anne's Lace which is a wild carrot relation, grows like crazy in my garden all around my house but carrots... no. If they ever do get to even a 2 bite size they are so bitter. I just don't know why. I think I'm just not going to try them anymore. I've been away for a while but I love your channel, lots of catching up to do. Thank you Liz for sharing what you do. God's blessings!

I smiled so much at those puffins. How cute! It's been a tough year for direct sown seed here in Ohio, no rain for over three weeks. After two days of rain, I'm trying again. 😊

Just made some Rhubarb crumbles, mine are too young to pick so my son in laws mother had given me an arm full. "Family Affair crumble," is what I called it. I love looking at others gardens I thought I was too late for Parsnips now I know I can get more seeds in. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for showing us your wonderfull farm and all the progress you make! Every month there is growing so much more, its a real joy to watch your work with all of your experience and knowledge! As I am starting a tiny farm in denmark since a few months, I can also imagine how much work it is but as always the gardening year is also some kind of adventure (concerning weather and so on). And also your trip to Skomer island was so interesting! All that wonderfull nature and the cute birds and seals!! ❤ Thank you so much!! I wish you the very best for the garden year and all your plans!! 🌻🌸🪷

Hi Liz. I loved watching all your beautiful planting and lush growth. I'm watching from New Zealand, where we're in the cool and damp times. Not sure if you've tried this, but I'm completely sold on burying kitchen scraps in areas like the dry dusty bed. I don't dig, except to bury and I do it because my scraps are free, it changes the soil immediately, it holds water better, worms move in fast, and plants seem to love it, and it's almost effortless. I just make holes as I need them, so miminal disturbance, and put a stone or brick, and maybe a big canna leaf or something on top. I can but dream of longer warmer days, and enjoy your garden tours.

I've been using paper coffee filters to get carrots started. I sew the seeds, wet the soil, lay the filters down, and spray water over. When I need to add water, the filters stop the seeds from moving. I use the same filters as a mulch over the soil around strawberries. I cut the filters on quarters, lay them on the soil. Bonus, coffee grounds have nitrogen in them.

It’s incredible how much you have organised in a relatively short time, how are you coping with watering I’m in Cornwall we haven’t had rain for five weeks , even the recent storms have passed us by and we still have a hosepipe ban from last year, I’m saving the run off from the showers in buckets washing up water , lettuce washing water and it’s taking two hours to water I’m a pretty fit 75 year old but believe me carrying buckets and watering cans well who needs a gym. But your area is huge compared to mine I don’t know how your managing to grow anything. ❤️

Liz, Carmarthenshire County Council tip are giving away free, yes free 25ml compost. It's not the best stuff tbh, but combined with a load of good ol' well rotted horse manure, it'll be grand! We've collected about 4 tonnes (about 10 dumpy bags) so far!! And they still have plenty left free! Maybe Ceredigion County Council tip are doing the same thing? Worth checking! We can't afford the level of compost we need and so this was an absolute delight to find out about!

Oh my goodness Liz, we sowed X5 different varieties of carrots and we also had zero carrots, but lots of weeds appear?! We've never experienced this before. The seeds were in date too? Could it be down to the ridiculous heatwave we've been having in West Wales?
@LizZorab
@LizZorab Жыл бұрын
Yes, very likely. I'm now waiting to see whether the next sowing appears. I've covered the seeds with a board to prevent evaporation while they germinate, but even that doesn't seem to be helping much!

At a glance those caterpillar on the dock leaf look like Peacock butterfly caterpillars. They usually eat nettles so could be why they are in that bed? Just a quess, but if they have small spines and very small white dots it could be them. :)
@LizZorab
@LizZorab Жыл бұрын
I had wondered whether they are peacock caterpillars too Sarah, I'll go back and look again in a couple of days and see if they've got big enough to see the white spots. We had masses of them last year on several different patches of stinging nettles, so they could well be.

Hi liz we bought a ton of what we call black gold really good compost from the local company making different composts etc. it must have reached very high temperatures and indeed was hot when we tipped onto our plot but the amount of weed seedlings in it is no body’s business. How is that😮?
@LizZorab

Sounds like it haven't finished composting or that weed seeds have blown onto it since it was made.

Did you use that huge pile of manure that was there when you first moved into the new farm? If not, surely that would be a fabulous addition to the raised beds
@LizZorab
@LizZorab Жыл бұрын
Huge pile of poo turned out to be just that. Poo and no bedding so it hasn't broken down into compost except for the outer layer. Next time we get a digger in for a day, I'm going to ask them to move the pile and spread it out more, so that I can add carbon materials and turn it into compost.
@phirst55
@phirst55 Жыл бұрын
@@LizZorab sounds like a plan,, you could also add all the grass clippings from between the beds in the fruit forest and a load of wood chips if you can get hold of enough at the right price!! That would be a brilliant growing medium by next spring.

Be careful with your jerusalem artichokes. I am curious how the dwarf variant flowers. In zone 6b we had a gardener plant them at our farm, they grow to be 8 feet tall, but they are so invasive. We have had so much trouble with them invading and coming back year after year.
