@project_b12246 ай бұрын
It didn't, Canibus didn't mean harm, he expressed it in a phone call and literally agreed to change the verse, but because LL was selfish and had a big ego, he had to just take it with big offense. He had a deal, he said he'd change his verse too, but he didn't. Then Canibus, being a genius, dissing LL made him famous.

@@project_b1224 Exactly 🤝🏽💯. Also Method Man and Redman stated on record that the verse wasn't even directed at LL. "Stay out tha DARK!" I remember that; whoever hadn't heard of DMX before that line knew him after that verse. So much was happening with this track, including Erick Sermon producing it. Meth & Red, Canibus, DMX, LL, Master P jumping on track because No Limit had their thing going on. X having two #1 albums in six months. Canibus and LL going at it. Hip-Hop.

DMX hadn't come out with his albums yet. This was 1997. He dropped his first one May 1998. It was this song and Money, Power, Respect that made me find out who DMX was.
@hironoshozo3 ай бұрын
@@rhaporrumpunch You're clocking the X album debut right, no worries; I'm just referring to that era of time when it was all happening. "Second Round K.O.", ""The Ripper Strikes Back", X's albums, No Limit, Erick, Meth, Red, the whole nine. Speaking of The LOX, they definitely were in the mix with DMX with "Money, Power & Respect" and those two mixes of "Get At Me Dog" around that time. That Clue mix freestyle session was madness.

I agree, Canibus was one of the best lyricist there were, but I think he was underrated too, when it came to mainstream success at a time when, any emcee-regardless of their lyrical content, could get on daytime radio. Canibus didn't get a lot of airplay and most of his fame came from guest appearances (where he killed). His LP dropped and slid under the radar and when people lists their greatest emcees of all time, he's way down the list behind people like Jay, Rakim, Big, Tupac, Em, etc. -if he's even on it. Canibus had the same career as Papoose, in that, he was on the verge of being the next big thing, but fate intervened, in Canibus' case, it came in the form of LL.
