Having only seen shearing done by a rough-handed shearer, I have continually been amazed at your firm but gentle handling. I never tire of your videos. I wonder: even if the fleeces are slightly felted, are they still processed for yarn? There has to be something salvageable!

How much of the wool is usable? If the animal hasn't been shorn yearly, is it too messy to use? Do people throw away good wool? If they don't put down a mat, does it mean they won't use it?

Camelids FTW. They're my favorite animals, from 🐫 to Alpacas. It's the necks and how they walk. Woop! Thanks for taking care of them! But I gotta ask...how the heck do you handle the "aroma" of sheep barns? Just remembering the smell from the Comal County Fair sends me running for a nose clip and Lysol spray!!!

Lol! I think that the spit from the camelids are WAY worse!!! But to be honest, I don't mind any of the smells at this point, unless its necrotic tissue or sick stool. Some times I wonder what my friends and family think when Darian and I come over after we work/sweat/hug sheep all day. Especially if I wrestled a Ram or Billy 😂 😂 😂

I'm sorry if you've covered this before, I just haven't come across it. But why is it that you restrain alpacas like that, but llamas can sit/stand/whatever? I know sometimes you halter llamas and keep their heads up to contain them, just curious about what seems like completely different methods between the two species. Either way, thanks for the fun and satisfying videos!

Great question. Alpacas have fiber from the tops of their heads, to their feet, between their legs and in their pits. In order to remove it from them, it’s safer to have them restrained so they don’t get hurt from jerking a leg or a head. Llamas have less fiber coverage and usually a calmer temperament. 🤘🏻

Wow, fast work! Love those shears. Compared to dog grooming they whizz by fast. I wonder if we can use anything similar to livestock shears for badly matted dog hair in extreme cases? If you know of any brand, please list. What is the meaning of your hand gestures with the horns? That has so many meanings worldwide. What do you mean when you wave like that?

I don’t know why I love watching animals coats being shorn. However, I can only watch yours now. Too many others I’ve see the animal get up and they’ve got Nick‘s all over them. Really bothers me. Question when you say killing the blade, does the dirt dull the blade or slow the cutting action?

Both. From a dog grooming point of view - the dirt jams the sliding action of blades, starts to overheat them, and dulls the edge so they need sharpening frequently. You have to stop, clean them with special cleaner, then oil them before, during, after cutting. This is how it is for dogs. The livestock blades are much more robust but similar concept. This is why a lot of dog groomers shampoo the dog first then cut.

I notice on most of your shaves. You do not give that final smooth coat. You leave the animal's with a bumpy finish. If i was the owner's, I would perfer a smooth finished look. So, it Iooked like I paid someone to do it. Not like i did it myself. I admit you have had some challenges. Plus you have time restraint. The owner may not say anything. But I sure their thinking of it. Love your channel Best

Shears do not leave smooth finishes like clipper blades. The large teeth make natural, uneven streaks. Most owners would not give this smooth of a cut. You should look at owners that do it themselves, it looks nothing like this. The point of the shearing is to remove the fleece with efficiency and the least amount of stress to the animals, not to groom them. There is no need to make the animal wait any longer than necessary for a even, pretty look. All of my owners are thankful because this is a professional, industry standard job. They are live stock in a pasture, not a pet groomed for looked.

True, but... like she said, the clippers are for shearing not dainty trims. Additionally, you get paid $35 per animal not $80 like a pet dog. So while a dog groomer can afford to spend 2-4 hrs on one dog, a livestock groomer needs to work faster to make less money. Livestock are also groomed in the fields not in an airconditioned salon. Its hard on the animal and the groomer. Speed is essential. Dog clippers have finer teeth for more detailed cuts. If you used this type of clipper on livestock, it would break. Their hair is thick and dense and you need very robust clippers. If you try to be too detailed, you may nick the skin more. These animals are in a pasture. Finely detailing them serves no purpose but to stress out the animal, damage your fine blades, nick them more. The hair also grows very fast on them, unlike dogs, so not much point in detailing.
