I am still recovering to date I was beaten and abused 25 years ago in the full knowledge of the Elders/Ministers. They did nothing and I still suffer with PTSD and depression because of this. I think another huge factor in the lack of growth in more developed countries is access to the internet. Google has proven to be source of real truth to those questioning the WT and its practices, policies and procedures. As a child in it, I learned very early on that when we did field service in more affluent neighborhoods, no one ever answered their doors, and if they did, were never interested. In less affluent or poor neighborhoods, the adults had a better chance of conversing with people. I realized that the affluent were content with their life and the less affluent were not which made them vulnerable to JW's. Appears that has not changed.

That's a good point...they are a desperate organization and their message should appeal to everyone regardless of socio economics and political climate (paraphrasing). I've noted the WT model is in serious trouble given they have anomolous growth in developing nations compared to first world all the while there's an average negative growth in first world countries. The handlers and actuaries of the GB and the various WT corporations clearly see they have a cash flow/growth/ decline imbalance. This is why they're selling off realestate and turning into televangelism. It would take decades for the third world nations to become affluent and in the meantime they're hemorrhaging...their model is simply unsustainable no matter how you approach it. If they were publicly traded they would either be a penny stock listing or delisted within ten years.

Great video, great points. One 'advantage' for the WT in poorer countries is the propensity for the poor to give a greater percentage of their income to the WT. This has been extensively studied with lotteries, which are predominantly fed by minorities and the impoverished. Out of desperation to get out of their circumstances, many throw money at the lotteries. Same mechanism and mindset with religious donations. It worked for the catholic church in the middle ages and unfortunately, these poorer countries just might be financially viable or better for the WT.

I love all your videos, but I want to especially thank you in this one for the way in which you talk about those who are in poverty. You show a real compassion for their situation and you don't evidence any condescension. Thanks Cath. I feel benefited by seeing firsthand what poverty looks like. On a trip to the Dominican Republic in 2003 I was taken preaching in a slum with open sewers. People were living in huts where the mud from the street continued into their living area. That vision has stayed with me and is a constant reminder that people don't choose these conditions, they are born into them and just do the best they can to get by. I can well understand why a group touting even the most pie-in-the-sky message of future prosperity will offer a distraction from daily struggles if nothing else.

Also, the rate of excommunication is less compared to Europe, Asia and America. That graph comparison of growth between poor and wealthier countries shots their argument for Free Will in the foot! Not that I needed any convincing anyway, but how can they argue that people's genuine free opportunity/openness to receive/serve God, is solely down to each individuals "free will" and "condition of their heart", rather than it being down to other factors such as, more options, more information, higher education, less religious etc

As always, a nice take on the topic! I wanted to ask however, would you have any plans on exploring the topic of current situation in the World and the reaction of JWs to it? I specifically mean the Iran situation as well as the China virus happening currently. I, as a person fascinated by the religion, can’t help but imagine that they are now stepping from one foot to another in apprehension. Are you receiving any info from the inside on the reaction? Do they see those as a sign of Armaggedon & now waiting for the Great Tribulation? I am dying to know!

Also, Wt's recruiting people and *keeping them* as longterm donating customers relies upon a stable lifestyle which is next to impossible in impoverished cirumstances. Any seeming growth in poor countries tends to be quantity over quality a revolving door with many people having studies, joining etc coming in but then going out and replaced by a new batch.

Watchtowers biggest problem is the Lord God Almighty. All darkness will eventually be exposed. Galatians 6:7-8 sums it up quite nicely:”Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. I pray fervently the these publishers will wake up and run to Jesus the Lord and savior of the world. (See Philippians 2:9)

Another factor in play, in fact the major impactor on JW's and indeed all religions, is education. Richer countries tend to have a better standard of education and more a meaningful discourse around knowledge and life sciences.

Hey lloyd. My boyfriend is in the process of waking up. Could you give me some advice on how to help him through this? He is really confused about his beliefs, telling me he sees himself as a regular Christian (I'm not, I'm a wiccan but I tend to think more like an agnostic person) who believes a lot of JW teachings... he seems confused but also scared. If they can't keep the young people they are doomed . Just out of curiosity I went to a Sunday meeting. Guess what ? No young people. Young children about 3 families that's it. That congregation had about 100 pubs. about 20 years ago.

The association is education or knowledge rather than poverty, although of course poverty and poor education go together. It is much easier to indoctrinate someone who has a poor education and hence can't understand the illogicality and distortions of history and the nature of myths, and so on. That is also why the organization discourages education. I would not go so far as to say it is deliberate -- it is just that the organization notices that those who do get a better education are more likely to leave.

Very interesting video. The same thing is happening in the Seventh day Adventist church. Great growth in the very improvised nations. Very low growth with many leaving in the more wealthy nations. Probably because of access to information of the sordid history and aberrant non biblical teachings of the SDA denomination

Is it such a huge problem for watchtower? How much is the average witness in the industrial nations donating to the oranization? When i think of my parents they gave far more than 100.000€ to the organization in the last 30 years and they are not even wealthy by german standards.

Lloyd - do you know what I was always told and I actually believed until only a few years ago? This: The poor people in 3rd world countries felt pity ON US because we had so many choices and things to distract us; they did not and therefore found the truth. I am a smart woman, but so broken hearted over how indoctrinated I was....it was YOU that showed me the light. My despair is that my mom has been in it for 50+ years, and also a sister so indoctrinated that you can’t bring up anything or you will be chastised. My brother has walked away but I don’t think has seen the “truth” that I have. I just want to know....who/where do I pray to now??

This is the same in the Mormon church. Shrinking in the US and Europe but growing fast in Africa, Asia and poor parts of central and south America! The problem is the money comes from the US and EU countries and very little from new areas. But they are emphasising tithing. And telling Africans to tithe even if it means missing meals!
