John I am a professional diver, but the dude in the suit coming out of the water is Big Time, he is a commercial diver, the kind that work on oil dredges, do underwater welding. Unlike a recreational diver like me they don't carry air tanks, wet wet or dry suit, they get air via a hose, one brings air in the other works to exhaust the CO2. They are paying more than you might imagine, I have been diving and taking classes since 1990, but I cannot touch these folks, they are few and demand huge $$

Yesterday, I ran into some JWs while out to dinner. I hadn't seen them in years. I guess they know I am no longer active, but as the conversation went on they asked about my children (who are no longer active) I said they are fine and asked about her kids to be polite. She announced that her youngest had just been accepted to Bethel as though the kid was accepted to Harvard. I was floored. How could this be possible if they are laying off?

+Jim Sherlock I had to think about your response as to the fact that they still talk to me. I think it might be because my husband attends meetings. I haven't been active since the mid 1980s. Terms like fading didn't exist. There would be some visits from the Elders. I was always polite and engaging. I just never let them know what I was really thinking. I've never felt that I had to explain myself and I still don't feel the need. Additionally, it has been my experience that not all congregations have the same personality. I have been to a number of congregations some very judgemental and some hardly ever payed any attention to me. I wasn't angry at them, I just didn't want to be them. I always give the anology that I was standing at the back of the room near the back door. One day I walked out of it and no one really noticed. It should be noted that I stood at that figurative back door for 15 years. If someone tried getting into my mind to figure out where I stood, I always replied "It's not something I feel compelled to discuss" I still feel that way. They don't bother me and I don't bother them. Anyway, you got me to thinking about if I was shunned. I can't say I am nor do I care.

I was thinking the same thing...lay off means getting laid off when you have a paying job. These bethelites were pretty much working for free by signing the vow of poverty with an $80 allowance a month which is peanuts AND being thrown out in winter. My goodness feel so bad for all of them.

Wow! I feel the same way! I was feeling nostalgic and downloaded the sing praises to Jehovah on my kindle to listen to the songs that my family always sang together and they have cut out the last verses of so many favorites and changed the tempo on others and to add insult to injury have added whole new songs that frankly suck. The final blow was seeing all the songs they had deleted (shulimite maiden no. 11; "he died upon a tree; to set all mankind free" whatever song that was and so on). The songs were the last favorable connection I had to the organization and they had to go and get rid of them in this new Frankenstein reorganization. As a very young child my grandmother played the piano at the kingdom hall in Fair Oaks, CA before the got a sound system and I remember being so intrigued by how she made the music come out. Now, everyone in her generation is gone, all those lovely old folks who fussed over my sister and I. I'm glad they didn't have to see this monstrosity of a takeover happen. On the other hand her own son left the religion in 1981 and she never spoke to him again so I guess that shows the dark side to this organization...

Cause regular cash flow is IMPORTANT and sold property cannot be resold a second or third time! If your assets are shrinking rapidly and your cost base ( for staff, existing property like office space or "not really church" properties that would be fully taxed and the printing stuff) stays high, you are actually bleeding money you can badly afford to spend. Even with 1 bn on the accounts if you lose e.g. 50-100 mn overall per year it is predictable when the billion will run out and you'll need the next cash infusion. Increasing donations otoh brings in NEW cash and reduces how much money you lose each year while not touching the savings account!

Amazing when these people are only getting a tiny subsidy and room and board. If they cannot make ends meet paying their people almost nothing, it wouldn't seem possible That they could survive. The next move could either include having the Elders call on publishers who are wealthy asking for a special one-time large donation as well as pushing members to leave their assets with the org at death, or they sell assembly halls and as many Kingdom Halls as they can get away with, maybe closing Patterson entirely even dropping those in full time pioneer service saving the little money they receive.. The growth in Africa and South America might not bring in enough offerings to fund operations in those areas.

We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us. As they were making so much profit this became a really big issue as now governments were going to start taxing them its not an issue if one does not make a profit so they came up with the clever idea of donations knowing this was not taxable but keeping this deep dark secret from the rank and file population of witnesses.

I would just like to make a comment to John and whoever wants to read it. Have you ever considered the possibility that Revolution was written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD? That Revelation was fulfilled with it's destruction? Jesus talked about the end of the age in Math 24. meaning the mosaic age with the destruction of Jerusalem. Daniel chp. 2 and 9 prophecies are about the coming of the King and the establishment of his kingdom, the new covenant, and all pointing to the destruction of Jerusalem. Think about what that means. The Kingdom is here, the " endtimes" already happened during the siege of Jerusalem in 70AD, and there is no Armageddon coming cuz it already happened. Read the new testament with that in mind and it'll change your whole view of the King and his kingdom and where we are in the stream of time. Just think about it.

The bible is just the babbling of a few ancient Israelites writing in their own time, for the people of that time. None of the authors of the books of the bible had the faintest idea that thousands of years later, people living in a civilization they would not recognize would be reading their work, or taking its messages personally.
