LMC Super Cuda 200 MPH!

Lady Luck was on our side last week as the Legendary Team made its way to the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan.

An all night drive through a snow storm saw us pull into the proving grounds parking lot at the crack of dawn. It was cold and overcast but no sign of rain or snow. It looked like the weather would cooperate, the next hurdle was having MOPAR engineers check out the Cuda. The car passed with flying colors, testament to the sweat and dedication put in by everyone at Legendary over the last year.

Then it was off to the black lake for some real world handling tests in preparation for the 4.75 mile oval and a crack a breaking the 200 mph mark.

Both the Cuda and the Enzo look impressive on the track but once the sun began to come out late that morning the setting was perfect for our high speed run. I think we captured some spectacular footage of a once in a life time event.

After a brief mishap, when the Cuda lost its windshield trim at 190 mph, Peter was ready to go. We could hear the Cuda coming long before we could see her, as the cars went by they sounded like jet fighters. Top speed 208 mph with still some leftwe did it!

Y does everyone have to hate? This car was in Mopar Muscle Mag, like earlier this year. I never followed the build but its a twin turbo viper v10 with viper supsension. It takes some engineering and alot of resources to put all of that in an E body. Respect it for what it is. You can buy an Enzo, but building a Super Muscle Car, that feeling is extasy!

This car has a Dodge Viper engine in it. Guess the stock engine couldnt take the heat :) Plus, the enzo hit a higher top speed since that cuda body was slowing it down with the aero PLus, you never beat an enzo untill you beat it on the track.

True and yes on My 440 with the forged crank, rods and piston 72 charger before I started going all out all of the bearings were upgraded and replaced. The oil pump was up graded to the hi capacity one same on fuel pump kept both as mopar high out put, then heads full headers then had the 727 beefed up to the hemi automatic. It would run top end with out breaking down or thinking about it. Like millwrightman99 says you have to work on all of it to do that even the engine has to be worked

Hemi's are the most resiliant engines on the face of the planet. They have the best oiling of any gasoline engine, and maybe even better oiling than a diesel, not to mention the engine block is absolutely bullet proof. There's a lot of reasons that HEMI engines are the best engines around. Reliability, longevity, and power output are just the three major reasons.

ariel is also made with a GM Ecotec as an option. It is made under license in the US, but is UK derived. Not much of shock considering its a tube frame chassis with wheels. Any place that could make a bike could make an Atom.

0.28, actually. One thing to keep in mind, too, is that the drag coefficient IS a coefficient, which means that it gets multiplied over the frontal area of the vehicle. So while the Daytona was about as efficient of a shape as a new Porsche 911, its greater size did mean it had more total drag. Here's a few other Cd's - Toyota Prius: 0.25 - Sautrn EV1: 0.19 - Cessna 172: 0.027 (!) - Honda CRX: 0.30 - '06 Charger: 0.33 - Murcielago: 0.33 - Geo Metro: 0.34 - Formula 1 Car: 0.90 (!)

I have a Mate who's dad worked for Chrysler in the U.S during the 69 Plymouth Syperbird's reign. And as they are pretty much the same car.. I figure the info I got covers both. :-D It was for downforce and rear stability, but positioning it as high as it was created a ducting box that sucked the vacuum bubble from behind the rear window, creating a funnel that reduced drag.

At age16 in '72, I went to Alaska for a couple of months, with the dream of buying a local SoCal '70 Hemicuda that was selling used for $3,500. It was gone by the time I got home, but 4 years later, was lucky enough to marry into my brides freakishly built 340 Duster, so it wasn't the end of the world. But man, if I could turn that clock back!

That Hemi will also run forever, far better oiling system than most BBC. Aero/Downforce is the only problem with that Cuda at 200+

I've never heard of that before, where did you read that? I can't remember the number exactly, but I recall reading they got upwards of 600lbs of downforce out of the wing, as well as a BIG boost in stability from the giant side fins, acting like an airplane tail to resist oversteer. The wing was also adjustable for different levels of downforce for different tracks, and it complemented the front nose and spoiler which actually made even more downforce than the wing.

I turned the round speedo in the 72 440 mag Charger from 150 past the odometer area up to 20 on the other side. That was a 44O single 4 with the larger street strip cam and 3.23 rear in it. Front end started floating after 165 and without the front down force much faster than that I was getting hairy

I don't know there llKlaponGll, I could see a stock Cuda flying over the guard rail on the Nurburgring while taking a corner at 30mph, but that car had it's handling dialed in pretty well for an old car. I wonder how close they could get it to a 50/50 weight distribution

What would help the Super Cuda is adding vents in the hood like the Viper that point up at an angle if that makes sense. Like the 69 Daytona if you add vents for the hot engine air to escape the engine bay it increases the flow and efficiency of the car's aerodynamics. Of course they could make minor mods nothing too dramatic to still keep the muscle car look somewhat.

I'm just really excited that they designed this one to not just "allude" to the original, but really mimic it, and I think this is the first modern car I've ever seen with actual polished (stainless steel) trim, not just conforming to the EXTREMELY played out dull, texture-less gray (or "CAD gray" as I call it) that we've all become accustomed to.

The Enzo has a lot of aero downforce which of course is going to compromise pure drag coefficient. Thing is you have to multiply the frontal area of the car by the drag coefficient for the figures to mean anything in the real world, so the actual "drag" of the cars probably isn't what you would assume.

Its not like I don't love muscle cars because I do , and your quite correct 150 MPH is easily doable with Chargers , I got my 1971 going 145 with the 440 -6 pack motor .Now that car was a beast , but the brakes were worthless For the street they were over-engined and under-designed .Just cus you don't go over 200 mph it does nothing to diminish the cars desirability .Today's cars have so much power its amazing you don't have to be a millionaire to afford one a ZL1 camaro is under seventy grand

I knew that rear wing helped keep the back end planted at speed, but wasn't really sure about downforce on the Charger. I agree with you about companies reducing drag... a few cars have done a nice job, but overall not so much. I personally think it's a good thing they don't go too far, some of the extreme examples are fugly (Insight, GM EV!). To me what's the point of having my cake if I can't eat it too. I want to see efficient cars that don't go so far as to make real ugly compromises.
