I can see a lot of confusion here. That servo applies pressure to the band which applies in 2 and OD. The corvette servo has a bigger diameter apply piston. Therefore it applies more pressure to the band. In other words you will see a firmer shift in second due to increased pressure/less slip. The main problem with that transmission is the 3-4 clutch pack. This is a good upgrade during an overhaul, (along with many others) but it will do very little to increase the life of this transmission in most cases. I am not saying don't do it, I am just trying to keep expectations in line with reality.
@SkinnySkinch

Thanks for that info. Do you have any recommendations on a 4L65 rebuild kit?
@michaeldose2041
@michaeldose2041 Ай бұрын
@@SkinnySkinch There really isn't a kit per say. Z pak for the 3-4. There is a wide band. Aluminum pistons, Fitzall makes a valve to disable the TCC partial apply ..500 boost valve. Hardened sun shell. Those are some things that come to mind off the top of my head, that I would use in every build. The question is what are you building it for and how much are you willing to spend? It is a high production unit so there is a huge amount of after market support . No matter what you do or how much you spend it will never be a strong as a 4l80e. Those units are cheap and plentiful and an easy conversion for a truck. Cars, like a camaro have limited space for a bigger unit. My best advice is do your research before you do your teardown and consider what will work for you.

This is a fantastic upgrade for any stock 4l60e. You get a bump in the 1-2 shift, but its meant to fix the lazy 2-3 shift. Makes the 2nd gear band release quicker and it doesnt fight the 3/4 clutches, which saves the 3-4 clutch pack. Great for performance, towing, or even lifted applications.

I have a 4l60e transmission in my Chevy Silverado. I had a shift solenoid go out. When researching solenoid repairs I found out about Corvette Servos. I changed out all 4 solenoids, changed the filter, changed the fluid, and put a Corvette Servo in. What a huge difference. No more lag from 2nd to 3rd which was a big problem before the shift solenoid went out. Highly recommend doing this upgrade.

Great part to upgrade for a stock 4L60E. Another great idea would to install an additional trans cooler in line with the radiator return line as it helps keep things lasting a bit longer. When you dig into the trans (because you will with one of these), I'd recommend doing either the 4L65E upgrade or going with a 4L80E trans.
@rockroll9513
@rockroll9513 Жыл бұрын
Most trucks already have an external transmission cooler that's not connected to the radiator. You're not going to notice a difference between a 4L60 and a 4L65 unless they were built wrong.
@TheWolfMatt

@@rockroll9513 Most, if not all, vehicles already have an external transmission cooler, most of which runs through the radiator but sometimes has a separate one in front of the radiator. A little added cooling, especially if you live in a warm/hot climate like I do, makes for a world of difference. Also, the 4L60 and 4L65 are relatively the same transmission, the 65 simply has stronger gears, larger fluid lines, bigger torque converter, and a slightly larger filter (to list a few items) to run around with opposed to the 4L60 to which I had blown up 7 of them. Still running on my built 4L65E and going strong I might add. It's capable of taking more power through the trans than the old 4L60 was and I only have mild mods on my 5.3L.

The stock 4l60 is still running strong with the factory lm7 with a custom tune and 3.42's on 33in tires. I just got back from a 2500 mile trip to Colorado with a horse trailer and 2 horses full of tack and feed. The truck did great I averaged 12 mpg and the trans temp never got over 205 degrees in the mountains of New Mexico. Id say put a vette servo in a 4l60 that's been rebuilt or a new one. A wore out transmission, you can just reset the TAP, and it will shift great for about 2 days, till it learns all the wear in the tranny, then it will be back to normal behavior. Performance parts, generally go with new or performance components. My tired 4l60 at 423k still shifts mint, unless i put it in tow haul, then every shift up is late and comes with a BANG. I made the mistake to dump the fluid an put in dex3, oe spec, which in 2004 supposedly was revised to dex6. my conv chattered uphill, and under load, and on the highway. 15l of dex6 synthetic later its fking mint.

I had a Corvette shift servo installed for a couple years and it made the shifts feel much better. Then while towing I blew up my forward sprag gear. After I got the transmission rebuilt my shifts were so harsh I though it was going to break my neck or something in the driveline so I actually removed the Corvette shift servo and installed the stock one. Not sure if my transmission builder installed a shift kit or what but after the rebuild I no longer feel like I need the Corvette shift servo. Also those black seal rings you thought were broke or ripped are supposed to be like that. They work similar to piston rings to keep the pressure from pushing past the seal.

That needs to be installed with the bottom end of the trans removed. Need access to the band clamp. There is a clearance check requirement between the servo rod end and the band. Most of them need to be grounded down a bit (the rod end of the corvette servo), or when the trans heats up, the band will rub against the drum and wear the band out faster.

Lots of people like smooth shifts. But that’s actually NOT good for the longevity of the transmission, too much “trimming” from the valve body slips the clutch’s to give you that “smooth shift”. A firm shift is best.

You need to stop driving in OVERDRIVE!!! YOU WILL BURN THAT SMALL CLUTCH PACK UP!!!.OVERDRIVE IS FOR OVER 55 MPH. I build transmissions and corvette servo upgrade is band pressure for positive engagement. Put a 3/8 flat washer between cups and its really firm. You can also grt longer or shorter rods for fine tune. DO NOT DRIVE ALL OVER TOWN IN "OD". You will burn up transmission clutch pack

@Go69

Upgrading that servo.... partially addresses 1 of the 2000+ problems that unit has that are engineered in... Give it a break.. Your Corvette servo is NOT going to turn a moped transmission into anything other than what it was when it left the factory... WEAK SAUCE.... I build transmissions for a living... if your engine is making REAL power-in this case anything above about 450HP, you will NOT keep a 4L60E alive behind it... Go ahead... listen to the "magic SELLERS" who will tell you they can build it to last... give them your hard earned cash, and learn the lesson you DESERVE... Don't get me wrong.. I LOVE that you are out beating on your truck! I LOVE the power that LS motors make... But the 60E is a freaking JOKE of a transmission... Every time you stomp the pedal to the floor and allow it to upshift under full throttle... welp, every time you do that could be it's LAST time to do that.. We sell the servos for $15 if you want to buy them from us.. brand new, in the box... with the scarf cut sealing rings... It will NOT make your transmission into anything other than what it already is... JUNK! It ONLY affects the 2nd gear, and 4th gear, as that is when the band is applied.................. The BEST thing you can do for your 4L60E... take it out and drop it into your nearest dumpster... Go to a 4L80E if you need over-drive... or a Th400 if you are serious about street racing... There is no substitute for cubic inches, and there is no faking a REAL transmission. 60E is a go-cart transmission... I can put $3000 into a 60E using the best after-market hard parts-Sonnax super hold servo, Sonnax input drum, billet output shaft, billet input planet reaction shaft, Sonnax 2-3 sequence valve, Performance wide band, O-ringed end plugs in the valve body, EVERY part you can think of.... and it will still be WEAKER than a $500 junk yard 4L80E with 200K miles on it... Those are facts... I get that not everyone has the dough to just jump into an 80E swap... I understand that... but if you are SERIOUS about making more than 400HP-every penny you put into your 60E is WASTED money... If you never plan to upgrade your motor to make more HP/Torque-then fine... put the Corvette servo in and it WILL make the 1-2 shift crisper, and it will also help on the 3-4 shift... as that is when the band applies... Besides that... you will not have addressed the BIGGEST weak link in the unit... the inadequate amount of friction surface area in the 3rd and 4th clutch pack... That is problem #1... it can all be fixed... for $$$$$... But in the end... how much HP your motor makes WILL dictate whether you can keep the anemic 60E, or if you MUST move to something else. Kudos to you for trying to at least help your fellow brethren out to *attempt* to make their wet dog turd of a transmission stronger... I see that your heart was in the right place and you are trying to do good.. Seriously, I think you were trying to push people in the right direction that are just getting started in performance modding their vehicle. The Corvette servo IS a great place to start... but look into your crystal ball... if you see more bolt on's, or engine upgrades, or long tube headers in your future... STOP wasting $$$ on the 60E and just get with the program with a better trans NOW... like Richard Holdener says "the 4L60E is the transmission made of glass".................. If you don't know who he is... look him up... He's right... It is a fragile, breakage prone, WEAK, POS.... But for you "all stock engine" guys.. It will suffice.. Barely..

@Go69
@Go69 8 ай бұрын
@@user-st6ij4go3d if your engine is stock, you really don't need to swap to a 4L80e.. with a stock motor the only benefit I can see to switching to the 4L80e is if you frequently tow, or if you ever tow a lot of weight, or you are beating the snot out of it often. Barring that... if you are not towing, then stick with the 60E as it will work quite well with your stock 5.3L. If you are just curious about what it takes to switch over to the 4L80e here is the list of things; Flywheel (needs a .400" spacer for the 80E)., crossmember will have to be reworked or an aftermarket one from Ebay or Amazon, wiring harness re-pinned at both trans connector and PCM, drive shaft length is different and needs a 32 spline yoke where it enters the trans, cooler lines will have to be re-worked, filler tube and dipstick are different than 60E, programming (segment swap with HP Tuners), and obviously a 80e specific torque converter that matches your cams requirements as it relates to stall speed. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to ask.

I have built some 700r4s and 4l60e's behind 500 hp engines. And they are holding up but it's not something I recommend or warranty. Another thing people never talk about is the weight of the vehicle its in. A heavy ass 4wd truck is gonna kill one alot quicker then a 3000lb car. Most of the transmissions I rebuild are from other shops who are total hacks. You get what you pay for
