5:00 Milena brings up something about the Avatar that I've always liked. The Avatar is more of a unifying symbol than any sort of position of power and authority. The Avatar doesn't supercede any political leader in authority, or command armies and fleets. How many times in both series have we seen the Avatar ordered around and even arrested and detained by local authorities? The Avatar is both the lowest of peasants and the most revered of elites at the same times. I really like that.

I feel like Raava gives light to whom wants to make use of it. But not everyone that expects light, can handle it. Same thing goes for darkness. It's all a matter of balance. That's what makes the Avatar so important.
@thiagohayashi99363 жыл бұрын
About the discussion about Raava. Raava is described as a spirit of HARMONY, not necessarilly good. The only time she is described as good is in the book Jinora reads. Vaatu is a spirit of chaos, normally a bad thing, but it was his liberation that after many unintended consequences freed humanity and allowed it to conquer the world (also, not necessarily a good thing). Plus, if have Raava inside you makes you automatically a good person, so that is no merit of the Avatar. He/she would be a puppet for Raava. It's possible for me that there would be an evil Avatar. My headcanon is that it could lead to the creation of the White Lotus as something to guide the Avatar in all lifes for good. Even (and mainly) without him/her knowing.

I love the discussion in the beginning, it's almost the "Sokovia accord" from the Avengers. I have heard his discussion before with people like Superman and the fact that Batman had a contingency plan to take out the Justice League, because power should always have a limit. The whole idea of evil also brings another problem, because "evil" is a subjective term. What is considered evil to one person might be considered just by another. I honestly believe Hitler thought he was doing a good thing, that he truely believed he was making the world a better place. And with him alot of other people. But on the other side, the Avatar, while very powerfull is just one person. Altogether it is an interesting discussion.
@oklahomie952 жыл бұрын
The difference is though, up until season 2 of TLOK, every Avatar doesn’t just make decisions based on their own experience. They have hundreds of past lives to lean on for information and guidance, but more importantly for them to have a true objective perspective of the world. I feel like I could easily trust someone who has lived in every era of time, in every nation, in every economic class. They can understand everyone because they have probably lived a life just like you
@brabbelbeest2 жыл бұрын
@@oklahomie95 I would understand this if these lives were actually part of their character. A good example of this are the Trill in StarTrek, where a symbiote is being past down from host to host infusing the next host with all the memories and emotions of the previous hosts, truly and completely becoming a part of them. But with the avatar it works differently. Yes, they are able to connect with their past lives for advice, but needs to be actively done. And as shown in the final episodes of Atla, this advice can be ignored too. And don't forget that it took Korra all of season one and hitting rock bottom before she was able to connect with her past lives at all. So before this she was all alone too. Due to the fact that he hadn't received any training yet, it took Aang also a while before he could connect to the spiritual side of the avatar.
@kwanarchive3 жыл бұрын
On the issue of an Avatar, that's why for most of history, the Avatar didn't get trained until they turn 16. Then, they had to travel all over the world to learn from the different cultures. Aang and Korra are outliers, because Aang was told about his status due to the monks' fear of the Fire Nation, and Korra could bend three elements at the age of three, and then she was trained in seclusion. So yes, in those cases, Zaheer maybe has a point about the Avatar, but in every other case, the Avatar is trained by all Four Nations into what they can and cannot do.

Another great reaction, Milena & Lola 😊 And Lola you make a good point about the Avatar possessing too much power for one person, it's not the most ideal thing to concentrate that much decision-making on one individual who may or may not turn out to be a good person, that's why they're supposed to be trained by sages, the White Lotus and masters from all 4 nations for many years in order to gain wisdom and knowledge that can help them for their duties in maintaining balance in the world. Aang was a special case as avatars typicall go. He disappeared for 100 years and he was not even master of all 4 elements. Circumstances forced him to try and save the world in 1 year despite all that. That's also one of the helpful things about the Avatar State. Even if you aren't ever ready as an avatar, you have the collective experiences, wisdom and knowledge of all past avatars and how they dealt with their own unique situations to fall back on and help you deal with your own problems in the current time. Unfortunately, that's gone now :( I think an evil avatar is ultimately somewhat impossible due to the fact that the avatar is mainly a reincarnation of the light spirit, Raava, and they are also Wan, so part of an avatar's nature is that they are always to be who Wan and Raava were in some ways. Sure, they can be unique sometimes and I do believe an avatar can be a villain sometimes due to being like an extreme version Kyoshi who is already an extreme as far as avatars go, but ultimately never evil. That would simply be against who Raava and Wan were.

I totally agree with you *Lola.* It's not so much that the *Avatar* has the ability to bend all four elements, but it's *the authority* that comes with being the *Avatar,* and the decisions being made _when they're just children/young adults._ Sure, sometimes it's obvious -- for example, _"there's a big bad thing about to destroy the world, as the Avatar I shall stop it."_ That's kind of a no-brainer. Apparently our brains don't fully develop until our mid-twenties. Prior to that we act primarily out of _emotion_ instead of _reason_ and _logic.¹_ And they've certainly included that in *Korra's* portrayal. ··•✺•·· ¹ ─ Looking back at the decisions I made prior to age 25, that's *not* hard to believe. 😊🤭
@distorityedan30813 жыл бұрын
Once again I'm not with Lola this time 👀 I get what's the conversation she's trying to open about all of the power the Avatar has and she has some valid points, but I think she's talking from a very eurocentric point of view, and we gotta remind this world was initially very much inspired by asian cultures. I see it this way: 1. The Avatar Is not a political authority, but a spiritual one. Yeah, they have a lot of power in that sense, but as Milena said, they have the literal spirit of good inside them, besides the help of hundreds of past lives to guide them through decision making processes (at least up until last season, lol). I feel like most people on this universe would know at least the gist of that, and while during Korra's Time spirituality it's not at the center anymore, I think it's safe to say It was for a long Time, at least on most of the nations. Hence why they would tend to respect and trust the Avatar on the first place 2. Being the common people aware of this, I believe there were supposed to be protocols on each nation to find, raise and educate the Avatar adequetly, so they wouldn't act so much on their instincts or personal beliefs alone. Aang was obviously a special case, but Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk and Korra are all known to had have a lot of especialized training and guidance 3. That being said though, as well as any education system, the Avatar's training Is obviously influenced by the culture and the moments they're being raised in. Yeah of course it's a good point that even with Raava they're still human and Will make human mistakes, but I believe that the biggest possibility for a Avatar to turn out "evil" would be because they're a product of their times. For instance, Kyoshi was definitely not as wholesome as Aang and Korra. She was Shady in many ways and did many unethical things, but being born in the political and ideological climate she was born into, a softer Avatar would've been dead asap. I mean, Kuruk kind of was, lol So yeah I don't think the problem would have to be a person having too much power, because it's a role, not an isolated case, people are supposed to know enough about It to at least respect their authority in spiritual matters. The problem I'd say only really starts when that knowledge Is lost, and that could've been very much the case in Korra's Time, certainly, which Is why I do understand Lola's point of what someone on the Town would think I do agree on how much better Mako's charachter Is tho, Haha, I'm glad someone's appreciating him! He really can be a badass

Okay so about supporting Zaheer and being evil, I disagree completely. Society is complicated, and politics are complicated too, this show's villains are very interesting (yes, even Unalaq) because they are created based on different political ideologies. Amon was communism, Unalaq was theocracy, and Zaheer (and his group) is anarchism. I don't think these characters were innately evil but they thought they could bring the change the world needed to the world, so people who followed them aren't evil either, their values simply aligned with the ones our villains have.
