Someone may have mentioned this on Patreon already, but it's been pointed out that up to this episode a police officer has fired a gun in this series only three times. Once was when Prez accidentally shot the wall while demonstrating how light the trigger was, once was Prez in the aftermath of blinding that kid in one eye, and now it's Prez in this episode making the wrong call and shooting a cop. So each time a cop has shot a gun, it was Prez and it was in the midst of him doing the wrong thing. Quite a contrast from your typical cop series, where police violence is often celebrated and depicted as an inevitable part of the job for any cop worth his/her salt.

Yeah the reason they turned him in was simple, they have a good thing going with Hamsterdam why would they let that go over an idiot who shot someone just cos he laughed at his shoes. Thinking Collichio did it is very conspiracy thinking, the Wire doesn't do things like that. I don't remember if he was even in this episode, if he was I don't think he talked. Also Bunny isn't in trouble cos the Homicide detective said he won't pursue it further if they have the guy who did it, he turned himself in so they are gonna leave it at that.

I love how y’all addressed the Prez situation with the subconscious racism. The fact that Prez acknowledged maybe it was in his head is very profound and another reason this show is the greatest because of the little pieces that matter.
@janvaneyck5600
@janvaneyck5600 Жыл бұрын
Was the show really acknowledging that? I always saw this incident as the show saying it wasn't about racism but everyone will see it that way no matter what, so it really doesn't matter. Everyone who knows prez knows it was a mistake, but they also know how society's gonna view it. Isn't "subconscious racism" just falling for that narrative bait that the show is saying is, at least in this case, false, but will nonetheless be eaten up by everyone outside of the picture due to the whole white/black dynamic and all the politicization that comes with it. Of course prez did pistol whip that kid in like episode 2, but his character had been shown to be redeemed by this point.

Yeah, it's not like Prez hates black people, seeing as Lester is most likely his best friend. But he can't be sure if he pulled that trigger, because the man who turned around was black. Like maybe if it was a white man, he would have held his fire. Maybe not. He doesn't know, and the fact that they are making it about that, makes him doubt what he was thinking.
@17thknight
@17thknight Жыл бұрын
@@transformersrevenge9 Yeah it's a hard thing to admit, and the most honest answer he could give is that he doesn't consciously think like that, but he doesn't know if it subconsciously affected him in that instant. He doesn't want to think so, but he doesn't know.

Why's it only White people who are ever accused of "subconscious racism" ? Why can't it ever just be a case of it was a genuine fcuk up on Prez's part with no underlying motive?
@LethalWalou
@LethalWalou Жыл бұрын
@@KurosawaStan It's not even racism. It's the topic about prejudice, but at the same time the city is filled with gun violence by pretty much black people only, so the threat that triggered Prez to act is based on reality. So you can't even call it prejudice when it's based on reality. A black person holding a gun is far more likely to cause Prez harm than a white person. The problem was that Prez failed to identify himself as police and with that he caused the situation that ended up in him shooting another person.

Love the callback to Daniels coaching Prez after he messed up. But back when it happened originally, we hated Prez, and we were disappointed that Daniels downplayed the maiming of a kid. 3 seasons later and Prez has grown so much, and so has Daniels. So this time it's a sincere coaching on what to do and what to say, for Prez's sake. Also, am I the only one who finds the scene with Dennis to be a bit dirty? Like good people are using the same 'get shortcuts by knowing the right important people' tactic that people like Clay Davis, Burell, Stan Valchek and other amoral people use. Just because Dennis is getting a sweet deal out of it, doesn't mean that it isn't another abuse of the system through connections.
@MM-vs2et
@MM-vs2et Жыл бұрын
I think it's more Prez's growth, than Daniels'. Daniels is clearly coaching him kinda in the same way, only for different reasons. The first time is so his detail doesn't dump people on the first week(which looks bad I guess), but the second time is his genuine care for Prez. But both are examples of cops covering up injustices. "You shouted 'police', right?" is clearly Daniels trying to make Prez's arguments for court. Exactly like "...he made you fear for your safety and that of your fellow officers".

Well, Cutty went through all the proper channels at first and was beaten down by the bureacracy. Really, this all boils down to Watkins having an interest in appeasing a well-respected Reverend and building up Marla Daniels' reputation in the community to *SPOILER* oust Eunetta Perkins in a future election, for the purpose of having someone with actual diligence and integrity in the city council. It's pretty underhanded to just have everything taken care of for these purposes, but that's the system when it's being used for the greater good. You CAN have an agenda and be a good person to get things done with this system, it's just that there are more Davis politicians than Watkins politicians. It works towards good only when you are held accountable, basically. Unfortunately, this is the system that we have chosen and it's easier to just fall into the corruption of do what thou will.

It was the rewind for the Prez scene for me 😂😂😂 Love it. Chileeeeeee...imagine watching this show in real time back in the day. Difficulty unreal. It's episodes like this that are the reason Season 3 is my favorite. Cutty's story with the politicians is a direct contrast to Stringer's story with other members of the same party. Loved how yall clocked on the series "victories" being tied to the individuals rather than the overall story as a whole. Another one of the shows main messages that ties together to the overall statement that the series is making. Avon doesn't retaliate against Stringer because deep down within he knows Stringer was right. From their POV D'Angelo was a threat and *anybody* else would've been killed a long time ago for being such a huge liability. However make no mistake that their friendship is definitely over. They still have ties to each other but any hope of their relationship going back to how it was before (Season 1 Avon/Stringer) was forever extinguished. Hopefully yall peeped how close Avon and Slim become throughout the rest of the season. Another thing is that I did love Rhonda's big boss moment in the episode. She be having her little moments. Always liked Ronnie. Lastly The Deacon is seriously one of the best minor characters in this show.

@@transformersrevenge9Well you can’t blame Stringer for wanting to leave the game to make legit business moves (look at a lot of rappers). @@Max25670 His problem is that while he was right in theory, and his ideas could work, he was wrong in practice, as he saw the game as beneath him, and tried to civilize people who for generations have done things in the survival of the fittest way. Colvin also tried to fuck with the program (both of them parallel each other, even with them being cut off mid sentence). String just didn't realize that you can't civilize everyone. You get a bunch of drug lord sitting down at the table and talking, and then you got one brutal druglord who feels the weakness in that, and takes over. There will always be and Avon, Marlo or someone else out there. Someone who won't be with the smart program.

Your talk about systemic racism and other issues raised in The Wire and their need to be addressed and considered by is what makes this one of the best shows of all time. You can NOT watch what I am about to talk about until you are done with the entire series. After the Wire was finished Barack Obama who was then the sitting President of the US filmed a discussion with David Simon the creator, writer and showrunner of The Wire about many of the issues brought up during the series and the State of America and what can we do with what we have seen here. It is MUST WATCH and I would love to see your reactions to the video posted here to your Wire Playlist as it is so powerful and a fitting denouement to the entire series. Watching a sitting world leader sit down with the creator of a piece of art and discuss it will kind of freak you out when you consider that it is never done and bring home how important this show was and still is a couple decades later. Keep up the great work!
