Excellent! About what I expect from LMT. Oddly the so-called inferior external piston wins. However, I believe if the gas valve did not fail, these would have failed at the same or real similar round count due to barrel hitting transformation temp (When steel begins to transform to liquid).

🎉Yes! Finally LMT, great results all things considered. The ejection pattern on both held up pretty well, very reliable and smooth runs, nothing catastrophic happened. Should you had a backup barrel assembly, could just swap it out on the spot, 2mins later the rifle would be good as new.

I've noticed that the rate of fire increases faster with the DI uppers. Yeah the piston uppers speed up a bit also but tend to stay more stable and not as fast. I'm guessing because the hot gas can travel more freely and faster without any obstruction in a DI, whereas the gas has to push a piston otherwise. And eventually the piston heats up and expands causing friction

First of all, thank you for doing these meltdown videos! I was more interested in the piston upper since that's what i know and love. I'm actually not very surprised that it failed because of the detent. It's honestly the only failure point that i can see on that system. Maybe thru testing that is supposed to happen, kinda like a gas tube exploding first before a barrel rupture.

I am glad you're out here to remind everyone that AR15's aren't light machine guns or heavy machine guns. You are pushing them to do things they're not manufactured to do. It's really interesting to see which ones make it a few rounds longer than the others, but equipment needs to fit the use-case. This type of wear doesn't resemble the wear from constant use under design intent conditions. I appreciate you because I don't feel motivated to replace my Midwest Industries rifle with an LMT or LWRC. If I clean and lube my guns they might need 2 barrel swaps lifetime and they'll never get remotely this hot.

I know exactly what you mean. These tests do put them to the extreme to see what fails first. I would assume the weakest part of the piston is the adjustable gas block

@@GoldenWebb absolutely.. and as an engineer I'm sitting here going "Well if you had a weapon system with a flow thru can you don't really need an adjustable gas block even on a piston gun" but then I reminded myself that the gun wasn't engineered to survive a meltdown. It doesn't need to be reengineered to perform at the level where it would exceed 2k rounds in your test because the trade offs for achieving that are not worth it. The M27 IAR has an 18" quick swap bull barrel option for the USMC for a reason. I have my FFL SOT and I'll still never have that need. It might be fun, though.

It's very interesting to see and it maybe gives me some ideas about what the properties of the barrel and gas system may be like, but ultimately the test lacks environmental validity, i.e. the test doesn't replicate the way the guns the would wear in their natural usage, but it does tell exactly how they would do in a situation where you need to mag dump continuously haha, and that's why I like it. It still tells me a great deal about their properties, even if it doesn't tell me a great deal about how long it'll stay accurate during my normal usage. That's not the point of it though haha

It's been a long time since I watched a Meltdown video. i know i never watched one with a1001 rounds fired before it stopped. I thought the gas tube was what the first thing to go. by design. That way you still have a manually charged firearm to get you home. Great job.

LMT's enhanced BCG is one of the, IF NOT THE finest in the industry, and they hold the patents on it. Karl Lewis has done an amazing job, and why others, like KAC, use to, or still do use LMT for parts and design. I believe the sought after MK18 from Daniel Defense was a Karl Lewis design. (I could be wrong)

Very impressive! I love watching the flames coming out of the action from the DI guns as they heat up. How about a meltdown of the KAK upper with that K-Spec BCG you reviewed??? Maybe get two and do one suppressed and one unsuppressed??? On second thought, I’d maybe avoid doing a meltdown with a suppressor, a baffle strike, not to mention “droopy barrel” effect doesn’t sound fun… 😂

I'd love to see a basic cheapo PSA Freedom upper tested, perhaps one of their 20 inch uppers as well. Lot's of guys have those in their safe, and I imagine it would draw in quite a few folks.

I think you’ve covered all bases in terms of the AR15 platform I wanted to see except for Colt. HK416 would be awesome! Also AK imports/clones: Zastava, Arsenal, Vepr (Norinco would be really cool) Etc. It would also be awesome if you tested handguns like Glock, Beretta M9, Sig p226, HK45/P30 etc. I also think the mp5 is without question. Love channels like this we need more, really put our favorite manufacturers to the test year by year

@GoldenWebb amazing test - next time you should try new LMT 14.5 mid barrels - longer gas system would definitely help with heat and barrel bending as seen on piston gun
