I like that there's no talking or music. I'm just finishing my log trailer and I'm considering mounting short tow straps to absorb the slamming since they have stretch. One for each direction to stop them just before impact.

That would be cool. With smaller logs the arch is pretty violent but larger ones aren't...usually. My plan to make the arch less violent is to make it hydraulically driven with a cylinder on each side.

Nice job on the trailer and arch!

Thank you! Its evolved a little over the years but it's still pulling logs up! I'll be making it hydraulic soon. No more lifting heavy arch up in the air

New subscriber here. Great video. Hoping to build a log arch trailer myself soon. Thanks for showing what you're working on.

good set up . an old tire to catch log and protect trailer deck

greg joyner Thanks! That’s a good idea. Would absorb the impact nicely.

Yeah, old tires, or a couple of them stacked would be perfect. I'm thinking of going with a roll up and over the side with winch and pulley.

Kenneth Settles that will work well as long as the logs are round and not too large! I have seen trailers like mine with way smaller arches on the back to just get the front few feet onto the trailer and then the winch can drag the rest onto trailer. I built this trailer to get those massive logs, it can handle 60” wide logs and up to 13’ long without the log hanging over the back. Thanks!
@KennethSettles6 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelElicson that's a nice setup. Did you just have someone make the arch? That thing can handle some large logs!
@MichaelElicson6 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Settles I built the whole trailer and arch from scratch. Instead of buying a used trailer and modifying it heavily I decided I wanted to build it. So far I have had around 5 large logs between 5,000-7,000lbs and like 40-60 smaller lumber logs hauled with this trailer. For a single person to process all of those that’s a lot of logs!

Beautiful. I made something similar out of lumber and pulleys for my box truck.

Nice!

The method I prefer is to attach a pulley to a tree or immovable object and use the winch that is mounted to the trailer to pull the log off using a chain wrapped around the log. I will make a video of unloading a load of logs.

My device is still in the working mock-up stage. As you've proven, the concept is robust enough to do serious work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6GqpZR8oLirbpo

skeets I built this trailer from scratch with no help from anyone and minimal tools. What’s your point? Did you build a log trailer at 18 years old??

This is great but why not do it with hydraulics? So much more in control, so much safer, see how that log crashed down on the trailer bed, with a couple of 12 volt activated hydraulic rams that just would not happen. You can still use your winch to draw the log forward.
@MichaelElicson6 жыл бұрын
Robert Denton Yes that was an idea when building the trailer. The reason I am not going to do that with this trailer is I don’t get a lot of logs this small. When the logs get up to about 2000lbs they do not slam down like this one did. The other couple factors was cost and this trailer is used for several other things not just log hauling. For $450 I can have a winch and battery setup that is very easy to maintain. I do plan on making a larger log hauling trailer and adding some sort of hydraulics to the arch can be a incorporated into it. Thanks!
